Re the 'No Camping' sign. I pulled up at a spot at one time and there was a sign that said 'No Fishing'. Well, I had heard that the fishing was great, so I decided to try my luck anyway. The fishing was fantastic, almost as good as I've seen anywhere. 'No Fishing', pfftttt! Best fishing ever.
Carry your gear in a bucket. When you set up empty the bucket and fill it with water. Use that to wet/wash your hands and tip it back in when you’re done for the day.
Often along a lot of rivers, the widest and best areas are actually in or around the town itself. I live near the Peel River system, and it's the same, the river is the best in the town of Tamworth, if you go outside of Tamworth towards the east, the river just gets narrower and less reliable. I think the reason is that the town was built around the best area of the river, and the people who built the town also possibly excavated the river a bit more to make sure larger bodies of water in the river exist at the town. Even exiting the town to the west direction, the river becomes narrower and worse, until you reach the next town built around it, where it again gets wider and nicer. The best area to fish isn't right in the centre of the town however, there are too many people, I find the best area to fish is on the edges of the town, where it's not part of the CBD area and it's very quiet, yet the river is still good there. This is simply the best area. There is a small park that no one ever uses that I walk across, I reach a nice area of the river, it's very quiet, but it's nice and deep and large, I catch Yellowbelly and Cod routinely there. Chaffey dam is the main starting point of the Peel, and fisheries on an average year put around 30,000 fish into it, of Cod and Yellowbelly. But also the Peel between Chaffey and Tamworth is also stocked as well, where over the past 6 years or so around 10,000 additional fish have been placed into that as well, of the Cod and Yellowbelly types. So I find it's very healthy with a lot of fish. There is also a stream just south of Kootingal that is heavily stocked with Rainbow and Brown trout, I haven't been there yet however, but it's not too far from home, just a 30-40 minute drive. Certainly there is good fishing in my area, with the help of the stocking map. I have another area I go fishing, on the Cockburn river, out near Limbri direction, this isn't stocked at all. And thus I never catch anything other than Carp, it's totally full of Carp. This is where I go if I want to go carp fishing. I can go carp fishing in this, and it's only 5 minutes from my house. To be honest however, I wish they could eradicate the carp, and put something better in there, I would even settle for Redfin, at least they are easy to get a good fillet off and have a nice meal. I don't currently know any Redfin areas in my area to fish in, obviously they don't stock this fish either. I used to live near Uralla and there is an area called the fossicking area, this place has so many Redfin and is a perfect area to catch Redfin, however it's a bit too far from my house to bother driving there just for some Redfin fishing, it's like 90 minutes away, and a lot of it is uphill, I can't see the point when I have Cod and Yellowbelly fishing just 20 minutes away.
Even better spot is behind the shepp lake theres some steps that lead down to the goulbourne and a big bank with plenty structure awsome area my useral spot and always a fish there
