To all of the people who didn't give this video a 'thumbs up,' and simply passed it by....Remember this. If it hadn't been for the men and women of Nicholson 's generation, who went 'that extra mile for you, you wouldn't even been using this bloody app! A nice tribute to James Nicholson VC.👍
Hurricane burns were extremely nasty to say the least. The gravity tank in front of the pilot at the time of the Battle of Britain was not of a self-sealing type, therefore it was prone to burst into flames when hit. Once this fuel tank was hit, the poor pilot in the cockpit would inevitably wind up sitting in a furnace of flaming high octane aviation gasoline unless he was able to bail out in short order. If however, one was unable to bail out, one would be fated to be burned alive, which was a truly awful way to go.
Great graphics. Well done! One small thing though. In the text overlay on the painting (image) of Nicholson in the cockpit, the text reads: "...to recieve the Victoria Cross...". It should, of course, be, "...receive..."
Can you share how you created your map graphic at 2:16? That's the best way i've seen of showing multiple flights to help orient the viewer as to where planes actually are. I've been doing static maps with diagrams drawn so far and it's a little cluttered
To add to my earlier comment the Matchbox "Badges of Courage" did put it that a BF-109 was the plane that landed the first strike on Nicholson's Hurricane (which wounded him in the eye and setting the fuel tank ablaze). They didn't show though that his parachute got shot at badly.
I vaguely heard of this from Matchbox “Badges of Courage” but that was from a comic book ad for boys to understand; this is the *real story* behind it.
What a helluva way to earn a living! At least Sqn. Ldr. King managed to stay with his aircraft, and so avoided being shot at from the ground. RIP P/o King. Not a great way to die.
A compatriot his (Percy Burton) should have been awarded a VC...but it was refused on the basis that two airmen of the same Squadron could not be awarded the same medal....stupid...
It's hard to imagine someone misidentifying a 110 for 109.... But with facial and eye injuries, it is likely he had double vision due to broken facial bones. He just saw a twin engined fighter and fired at it..... but of course it wasn't a twin engined fighter.
Not a VC worthy action really. DFC maybe. He didn't even shoot down an enemy. He got hits on a possibly fictitious plane while he was going down in flames. Not really Rorkes Drift...
@@alanmeasures8337 It should be a Distinguished Flying Cross, not a Victoria Cross. That German plane is not attacking another RAF fighter, the German is not shot down and the action not witnessed by any other RAF pilots to corroborate. Certainly he was a brave individual
Enjoy the video and share your thoughts below!
Note: 8:18 is meant to read 'receive'
My respect for Hurricane pilots has vastly increased, such a huge amount of courage to fly!!!!

Think all the amazing pilots that defended the skies of Great Britain 🇬🇧, most certainly deserving of a victory cross , they were all heroes

Well said. The lack of performance made the Hurricane especially vulnerable, and the bloody Vic formation only made it worse for them.
A great amount of respect is warranted for those brave lads who flew the outdated Hurricanes that tended to catch fire throught the firewall.
Excellent production, as always.

Incredible story!😭
An excellent depiction of a famous incident in aerial combat. Learned even more that I never knew about until now.
Radar and the brave pilots of the RAF made all the difference. Good video

Thanks again Soto.
Amazing, well done!
Sad that he survived the whole war up until just 6 days before the end of the European conflict.
We had a family member make it to a week after the war

Me ha encantado. Muchas gracias. Una historia triste pero muy bueno el trabajo.
Gracias de nuevo
Always love your videos - so well done 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Do you know what What was his role in the B-24? And on that part of the world?
Yes he was flying as observer off the coast of India when the B-24 caught fire and crashed
Excellent Work ! Thank you and greetings from Poland !☺☺☺

I'm one very proud great niece.

parachuting out must have been the last resort i should imagine
Did the home guard who shot his arse up get the iron cross?
Very good

Well I guess he would know if the plane he shot down was a single engine or a double engine aircraft. If he says it was a 110, I believe him.

I’ll be harsh, that action really doesn’t deserve the VC.
Why not He is in a burning plane and as the ball's to try and take out the enemy

Brave Man all the same
@@alanmeasures8337 most brave men received no medals or acknowledgement at all. That's not really a VC action..it's just not.
