@ProductDesignOnline ...I was shattered when Autodesk pulled the plug on (the old) Slicer for Fusion 360 and have been searching for a replacement ever since. I had structured a practice around it and found it one of the most useful pieces of design software ever. Do you know of any other software that does what it did?... or the developers? I want to CNC a giant (1000mm) version of a 3d Print model out of foam and was wondering how to slice it. I'll give this a go. Looking for slicing tutorials for CNC gets flooded by all the 3D Printing slicing tutorials, glad I found yours
@@ProductDesignOnline Slice so it fits on the bed. The final model will be 1.6m x 1.2m x 0.5m when assembled. Most of it can be hollow so I'll only cut the outside surface of the model as thick as my x-axis. I know I can cut it in plywood slices (like the lampshade) easily but then it's not the 3d model I want. Its a stacked set of 2D plates. That can look good as an artwork. But I really want to foam cut a XL size model (e.g. a Grizzly bear)
Great tutorial and very clear introduction to Slicer. It’s especially good to see how to approach correcting errors in the slices. I will try some scaled down furniture just to see how the flow works then see where that leads.

Product Design Online will do, this is a retirement project, I love making stuff and I have always wanted one. Expecting a steep learning curve but for once time won’t be the main hold up. That's what i was thinking. For the chair grain direction might be an argument for not rotating them, but if i were to make the lamp i'd just draw 3 or 4 sheets of concentric circles instead of 26 sheets of waste.

I have been working already for a while in Fusion and i want to start testing with an small CNC machine. Is a GRBC controller, i can find a concise information in what to do. Yeah it’s a beast to find now, as it’s been discontinued, but is available from Autodesk in their “knowledge network”. It’s back to being standalone Link will likely get broke/removed, so I’m not going to link, but I promise you it’s in there I just downloaded it again for a new desktop to run my new laser cutter.
I want to do this with my 9th grade sculpture class only with printed papers that would be used as templates to cut out cardboard interlocking shapes. The students would manually cut out the slices and as a team we would assemble the final piece. However, it would be cool to have a laser cutter for this project but then it takes the process away from the kiddos and they don't have much participation in the project.
Great Content...To make interlocking panels work, it appears there should be a way to adjust the length/depth of the slots themselves. It doesn't appear to exsist in SLICER. Is there a way to export individual components and modify them and bring them back in? Thanks for the great videos...
Unfortunately, they had that feature at one point but they rolled it back because it messed up other functionally....and now the program has be deprecated. However, Fusion 360's new Nest workspace (still in Beta) will have similar functionality.

I have seen a small 3D printing project done with it. Someone made an interesting layered 3D model of their face. I forget what the reasoning was to use slicer/print in huge layers. If I find the original link I'll share it :)
Hi David. In short, you used to be able to do that when the app was originally part of 123D make. However, they reverted that feature as it broke others...and then the program got rolled into this Slicer app so it was never revisited. :(

Hi, Carl de Souza. Unfortunately, there is no native way to hide or remove the numbers in Slicer. The fastest way I've found is by using Adobe Illustrator. You can select all of the numbers and other markings (red) by selecting all of the same color. 1.Select any one part of the image that contains the color you want to remove (black in this case) with the Direct Selection Tool (A) 2. Go to the Select menu > Same > Fill Color. Cheers, Kevin :)

Hoping to use this for a small shed design using 1 1/8" plywood. TOodo this I think I will have to half lap some sheets of plywood. I wish there was an additional feature in Slicer for tiling and/or lapping sheets. Any thoughts on the best way to accommodate this variation?
If I understand your question right, I believe it's easier to do the tiling in your CNC CAM software. In Easel for the Xcarve I can create material larger than the bed and it will setup the tiling and have a step where I shift the material to a 2nd starting point. That gets me a 30" x infinite workspace

With the non supported version of Slicer when I select one of the red pieces the cursor does not change nor does it allow me to drag the shape to correct it. What am I doing wrong?

You can still download and use Slicer as a standalone program. Still been working for me. You just can't export directly from Fusion 360 now. I shall do another tutorial tho!

Managed to find the Slicer download, still have to learn how to do the water drop in Fusion, then export as SVG into Inkscape, convert to STL/OBJ then into Slicer, I'm only on the 'free' Fusion' so a few extra steps it seems
You can use construction planes or surface extrudes... And use the split body command to slice and dice your model. Did you try the latest build of Slicer for Fusion 360? they are no longer supporting the software but you can still download the last version.
It can still be used independently (without Fusion 360), but it unfortunately has not been updated since shortly after this video was created. You can still download it. They pulled the direct links from the Autodesk website since they were no longer updating it (and didn't verify with each new OS). @@ProductDesignOnline p.s. I was stumped on how to export the '3D slices' with curvature rather than 2D as there was no 'get files button'. After a long time I realized you go up to FILE > Export mesh and i'll make you a zip with all sliced geo STLs (in case you're ever curious).

@@robertsilvanogueira2623 Thanks for clarifying. Slicer does have some size restrictions. In general, you can't use a model that is larger than the standard (preset) sheet sizes in Slicer. What is the object you're trying to create and how large is it? You may have to split the model into sections in Fusion 360 and then send it to slicer in sections. Cheers, Kevin :)
Hi, Nojus Armonas. Unfortunately, this has been a known issue (I've seen som posts on the forum about this). They are no longer working on the development of Slicer so I'm not sure if there will be a fix for this any time soon - other than manually deleting the second line. If you export as DXF and open in a graphics program they should be on layers where you can delete all of them by deleting the corresponding layer. Cheers, Kevin :)
@@ProductDesignOnline oh thanks, just found out on autocad these lines have thickness, 2mm. I guest that was the problem. That other programs rocognize thick line as double line. You can simply change it in line properties in autocad. Haven't tried cutting laser tho. :D . I hope it'll work.
It's too bad they have abandoned this product. If they're not going to incorporate it into Fusion then it'd be nice if they would open source the product. There is a lot of obvious improvements that still need to be made. For example, in the lampshade there is a lot of waste in the cut plans. It could be made to utilize the void space inside the large rings to nest the smaller rings. Probably cut it down from 26 sheets to 3.
Your lamp is hollow on the inside. The nesting parts should have placed the smaller circles inside larger ones and used lot less sheets of cardboard. The nesting has wasted lot of space that could have been used. You shouldn't use slicer for nesting.
@@ProductDesignOnline you should mention that in the video. Newbies don't know about this and will end up wasting lot of material. Make an entire video on nesting.
Yeah, I chuckled when Kevin mentioned the software organized the cuts to fit on "fewest amount of sheets as possible"....and figured there was a downstream workaround.

"minimum number of sheets"... not, by far! you can reduce the number of sheets to a quarter, or even a fifth, by putting the smaller circles inside of the larger ones, and cut them first, and save 75% or 86% of the cardboard 😛

The optimization for the lamp rings is surprising. I would expect a small set of sheets, each with a slightly smaller series of concentric rings.
And the chair is not much better. Rotating som of the pieces would allow for fewer sheets.

I set the speed for the video to 1.25x - so much better to listen for me

@@ProductDesignOnline I like your tutorials the best as you are clear, concise and don't assume we know everything from the get go. Managed to find the Slicer download, still have to learn how to do the water drop in Fusion, then export as SVG into Inkscape, convert to STL/OBJ then into Slicer, I'm only on the 'free' Fusion' so a few extra steps it seems
I managed to get Slicer to work, however the output file has to many nodes and the transition from each is not smooth at all....eeek
Slicer is no longer working. Do you have any idea how we can still to this in Fusion360 or any other program?
You can use construction planes or surface extrudes... And use the split body command to slice and dice your model. Did you try the latest build of Slicer for Fusion 360? they are no longer supporting the software but you can still download the last version.

It can still be used independently (without Fusion 360), but it unfortunately has not been updated since shortly after this video was created.
You can still download it. They pulled the direct links from the Autodesk website since they were no longer updating it (and didn't verify with each new OS). @@ProductDesignOnline p.s. I was stumped on how to export the '3D slices' with curvature rather than 2D as there was no 'get files button'. After a long time I realized you go up to FILE > Export mesh and i'll make you a zip with all sliced geo STLs (in case you're ever curious).

@@robertsilvanogueira2623 Thanks for clarifying. Slicer does have some size restrictions. In general, you can't use a model that is larger than the standard (preset) sheet sizes in Slicer. What is the object you're trying to create and how large is it? You may have to split the model into sections in Fusion 360 and then send it to slicer in sections. Cheers, Kevin :)

Hi, Nojus Armonas. Unfortunately, this has been a known issue (I've seen som posts on the forum about this). They are no longer working on the development of Slicer so I'm not sure if there will be a fix for this any time soon - other than manually deleting the second line. If you export as DXF and open in a graphics program they should be on layers where you can delete all of them by deleting the corresponding layer. Cheers, Kevin :)
@@ProductDesignOnline oh thanks, just found out on autocad these lines have thickness, 2mm. I guest that was the problem. That other programs rocognize thick line as double line. You can simply change it in line properties in autocad. Haven't tried cutting laser tho. :D . I hope it'll work.

It's too bad they have abandoned this product. If they're not going to incorporate it into Fusion then it'd be nice if they would open source the product. There is a lot of obvious improvements that still need to be made.
For example, in the lampshade there is a lot of waste in the cut plans. It could be made to utilize the void space inside the large rings to nest the smaller rings. Probably cut it down from 26 sheets to 3.

Your lamp is hollow on the inside. The nesting parts should have placed the smaller circles inside larger ones and used lot less sheets of cardboard. The nesting has wasted lot of space that could have been used. You shouldn't use slicer for nesting.

Yeah, I chuckled when Kevin mentioned the software organized the cuts to fit on "fewest amount of sheets as possible"....and figured there was a downstream workaround.

"minimum number of sheets"... not, by far! you can reduce the number of sheets to a quarter, or even a fifth, by putting the smaller circles inside of the larger ones, and cut them first, and save 75% or 86% of the cardboard 😛

Thank you for the video. It was very helpful. I sliced my existing file and send them for laser cutting, however, the people who do laser cutting asked me to provide a file without the numbers marked on every profile (in red). Is there anyway we can generate profiles without the numbers marked???
Hi, Schematter CAD & Printing Goa. Unfortunately, there is no native way to hide or remove the numbers in Slicer. The fastest way I've found is by using Adobe Illustrator. You can select all of the numbers and other markings (red) by selecting all of the same color.
1.Select any one part of the image that contains the color you want to remove (black in this case) with the Direct Selection Tool (A)
2. Go to the Select menu > Same > Fill Color.
