Bessel van der Kolk, MD, is widely known as the top expert in the treatment of trauma. He is the author of the Body Keeps the Score, and his therapeutic process focuses heavily on the mind - body connection.
When Bessel is first meeting with a client who has experienced trauma, he is making an initial assessment that can be vital to a successful outcome.
In particular, he's looking at the person's posture, their eyes, and their breathing. He'll often spend the first hour focused entirely on the client's breath pattern.
The reason why this is important, especially with clients who have a trauma history, is because the primitive brain might still be holding control over the client's behavior.
And if that part of the brain is still in control, it can prevent the client from opening up to the world around them. This can make it very difficult for any psychotherapy technique to take hold - which can prolong the path to healing.
