If you lack Mr. Kelly's background, you can try a couple easy ways to start:
    1) buy a small rental property. If you buy one and it already is occupied by a tenant(s) which is usually the case (say, a duplex) - you have a business that will teach you how to operate and you have an ongoing income stream. It's one of the safest ways to learn how to run a simple business, and there are always people who need to rent.
    2) buy a small service business. This will likely cost even less than a rental property. If you buy a service business with a known demand, a known customer base, this is another way to learn how to operate a business. Examples of service businesses with very predictable demand and customers:
    - a housecleaning business
    - handyman service
    - painting business
    - window cleaning
    - paving stone, patio installation
    - lawn care
    - food vending cart
    - etc.
You can fill a page of very low-cost service businesses you can start, operate for a year or so, then sell that business, and use the new knowledge to buy something larger, with an SBA loan.
Mr. Kelly did a fantastic job getting that first business to 25 employees! Cool story. The raw courage that would take - because it was not too established at all when he quit a great job he had - is sort of in line with his willingness to do a 6-year term in the military.
