Pianist and composer Kit Armstrong steps back in time to revive the spirit of the early English composers William Byrd and John Bull in his Deutsche Grammophon debut album »William Byrd · John Bull - The Visionaries of Piano Music«. He is exploring a remarkable legacy of works originally written for organ or the virginal - close relative of the harpsichord - and presents the composers immeasurable contribution to keyboard music as well as their contrasting means of expression.
Throughout Bull’s colourful life, numerous testimonies attest to his great fame and extraordinary skill as a musician. In his works, both intellectuality and viscerality are singularly conspicuous. Most remarkably, he predominantly wrote keyboard music, probably as the first among composers ever to do so and revealed the genre’s stunning potential for the
most intense emotion to be squeezed into the smallest element, precisely because a lone performer could concentrate and direct his entire passion at will.
