Yes, yes, yes! Her performance of this blues classic should be a standard example in every voice/performance program given from now on. She is simply divine in it.

Is that the one where she's standing in front of a band? It's phenomenal. She was the first Elphaba I saw for Wicked and remains my favorite, she's so so so fantastic!

My dude, YES! Broadway is all this, all the time. If you see the full production of Waitress, you will not get through this song without crying. Shoshana Bean has played a lot of big roles, including Elphaba in Wicked, so PLEASE keep going down this rabbit hole!

What I love about Broadway musicals is they're very raw, and very real. Since you can't really see the emotion on their faces when they're on stage, like you can in movies, they have to project the emotion through their singing. It's powerful and leaves me in compete awe of their talent. Jeremy Jordan did a live cover of this song and it is incredible!

I love this song. Written by the Majestic Sara Bareilles for the Broadway play iteration of Waitress. Shoshana brought it and you can feel the sorrow and regret of the character as she sings missing the person she used to be. Jase give Superfruit and Shoshana's Pop goes Broadway a listen. It is funny as all hell. Also If you like this song try listening to another Sara Bareilles gem called Seriously. Performed by Leslie Odom jr. It is political as its sung as what then President Obama might've been thinking but didn't say during the 2016 presidential election.

Oh my gosh YES! Please go to a Broadway show (or live musical theater production where you can) someday. It's such an incredible, magical experience. You'll be hooked. This was awesome. I have to admit I've started to listen to this song several times but it just never grabbed me (I'm sure because I'm seeing it out of context as I've never seen the play and am not familiar with it). This is the first time I've finished listening to the song and it's really beautiful. I did cry - as usual lol. Thank you for doing this one!

Dude.... If you want to see an amazing version of this song you there are two that you have GOT to listen to. The first is Jeremy Jordan. He gives it an emotionally gut wrenching spin performance. The other is Sara Bareilles. She wrote the song (and the rest of the songs from the musical this song came from). Her performance of this song is pure magic.

She is singing to her unborn child, a pregnancy she didn’t want...from an abusive husband who she wants to leave.
“And now I’ve got you, you’re not what I wanted, if I’m honest I know I would take it all back for a chance to start over, and rewrite an ending or two”......
    And yes, Broadway is AMAZING!

This is one of the best Broadway songs of all time (IMO). A song about regret, and longing for someone you used to be. Rips my heart out. And Shoshana sings it INCREDIBLY!! She has an A+ voice, but that's not enough with a song like this; it takes passion and deep emotional longing. And she just nails it. I've heard it sung by her as the star of the Broadway show Waitress, and it brought me to my knees. She is AMAZING!! Thanks for reacting to this, Bro. It was fantastic. Best wishes. Billy J P. S.: And yes, this is what a Broadway star sounds like.

The first and only (so far) show I've actually seen on Broadway was Waitress and I had the pleasure of seeing the original cast, which included Keala Settle (the original singer of This Is Me from The Greatest Showman). I'm not much of a fan of the movie the show is based on, but the Broadway production is outstanding. Sara Bareilles wrote all of the songs. It really is worth seeing and, yes, for the most part pretty much all Broadway musicals will have at least one song that will hit you right in the feels.

Yasss Shoshana is a queen! Her version of "Make It Rain" is also very much worth checking out. Btw all the songs in this musical are written by Sara Bareilles (another vocal goddess you should react to)! I've never seen another musical more than once but for this one I made an exception because Sara was playing the lead on West End and my god it's an emotional rollercoaster, it's worth checking out the whole thing if you get a chance.

In any absolute sense, Shoshana Bean is a tiny tiny star, known only to Broadway fans and some TH-camrs. But she's quite great. I do think this performance proves it. I'm just saying she's definitely a case where it's no surprise you haven't heard of her.
The best version of this song is probably by Sara Bareilles, who wrote it.

  • @Mercadian

Broadway isn't always like this (just like with everything, there are good and bad shows/performances, and also different genres). Because you can't always see their faces (unless you have excellent seats), even in less good shows, the performers' emotions are conveyed in their voices so that the audience can buy in to it. This is the same whether you're watching something comedic like Shrek or Something Rotten, or dramas like Next To Normal or Les Miserables.
My favourite example of stage conveying emotions in a raw manner, both in comedy and drama, is probably Come From Away (seen it live twice). That show has so many highs and lows emotionally. It's beautiful and funny and painful all at once; you'll be laughing at something genuinely funny before the gut punch of emotion. "Me and the Sky" (the live recording on TH-cam with Jenn Colella is amazing) is one of the best examples of the show in general. Slightly comedic, hopeful, triumphant, despairing.

People who say this is ALWAYS Broadway... I'd actually disagree (and I LOVE Broadway). There are MANY talented singers like Shoshana (you have to be to get to Broadway). But it takes certain writers to make me cry like crazy. And this was written by Sara Bareilles (who is an amazing actress in Waitress) but she's a musician first. She always makes me cry. Other musical theater legends who make me cry are Stephen Schwartz, Stephen Sondheim, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Alan Menken songs (the last guy is basically all the Disney hits we know from movies).

@Jase N Yo Face: As something for a background you should watch the Movie "Waitress" It's where the musical came from ( I think). It's my first exposure to the story. Starred Kerri Russell. Sad fact is the woman who wrote the movie, Adrienne Shelly, who was in it, was murdered shortly after completion.

Please listen to the Jeremy Jordan rendition of this song. Or just any Jeremy Jordan in general ! Him singing Santa Fe is great as well
