- Through the mountains of Slovenia, there are manual cable cars: some historic, some more modern. There aren't many left. I was able to try one, and to talk to the person who still maintains it.
Just to be clear, there are a few of these in other places in the world, too. There's at least a couple in North America, one in Germany, and one in Turkey! (Or at least, I think they still exist.) But the video of the Cicka got me to beautiful Slovenia, and the story that I found there was worth the trip.

Well worth visiting Slovenia 🇸🇮. I was there last year and it is beautiful. Very similar to Switzerland 🇨🇭 and much cheaper!!
There's a ferry somewhere in France (I don't remember the name) that uses a similar techique, if you're interested...

Tourists destroy things and harass people way too often, there is large risk in showing something interesting to a large audience.
He knows the history of the Broccoli Tree. Actually, a lot of the very very old trees that scientists find, they have to go through pains to hide the locations of these trees because people will go search them out to cut them down. There's always some people who just want to watch the world burn, or put less dramatically they get a kick out of destroying things.

I'm from Slovenia and it's amazing to see a person like you documenting sights like this.
Much of Eastern Europe hasn't gotten the attention that it deserves for things like this. I'd imagine there's quite a bit of cool stuff to see and that it remains much more affordable than the more widely talked about areas inWestern Europe.
I Wonder where This is relating to Tolmin, been to Tolmin 5 times for metaldays festival, and loved hiking in the surroubding area, and need to see more stuff like this

I noticed a similar lack of records for passenger ropeways and ski lifts in Australia, so I thought it would be easy to make a list of them, past and present. That was 16 years ago and I now have over 500 documented on the website and I discover a few more every year. It was not an easy task.

I remember just a little while ago that Tom was terrified of roller coasters. And now he's bouncing up and down on a device that is far less safe than any roller coaster I've ever seen!
He's also done a few height related videos where he said that he didn't like heights (I think one about a really high diving board and one that was for maintenance or stage lighting purposes).

What a beautiful country! First I had some friends just get back from hiking there and showing me pictures, then the Grand Tour's Eurocrash show just went there with some beautiful video of Lake Bled, now Tom. It's a sign to visit Slovenia.

When we were looking at countries in Europe deciding where to go in 2021, we saw a couple places that said people who visited Slovenia wished they'd scheduled more time there, so we dedicated the majority of our time to Slovenia and no regrets! The caves are out of this world!
Great to see you in Slovenia Tom. As a local, I was not aware of this one. But there plenty of other unusual sites, with a story of their own, a select few: Bolnica Franja (hidden resistance hospital from WW2 in a gorge), Mali Plac (miniscule Nature Reserve in Ljubljana Marsh next to a highway), Aljažev stolp (storm shelter on top of highest mountain Triglav), Libeliče (village that refused the WWI demarcation line and "ceded" itself).

Tom is becoming braver on each adventure, some time ago he would never bounce so confidently on a sketchy cable car over the abyss.

I can't really believe Tom Scott visited that random cable bridge me and my family saw while travelling 2 years ago.
We didn't think much of it.. but we definitely played around a little, it's actually inclined slightly so that it's hard to finish the trip in one direction, but it almost goes hands-free in the other.
You can notice the effects of the incline if you watch the end scene where Tom moves it back.
Now imagine they had this over the grand canyon.

I really appreciate how all Tom does with these kinds of videos is introduce the idea of the place or thing, let the locals tell the story in their original language however they want to, and then show it off to educate us. He shows respect, care and integrity.

That is the sketchiest part of the setup to me. Sure, hand powered no mechanical advantage crank system. But having to pedal it backwards?
Well not sure how that makes it more sketchy. Everyone that crosses over has to do this to return back , not just Tom.

This is quite amazing. Conceptually, it makes perfect sense, especially if a traverse needs to be installed and the council or designer wants to make it as low-impact as possible, there's room to bring these back

YEEEEEEAAAAA Slovenia!!! I live not far from here. There are actually quite a lot of these in Slovenia. One that I know of is also in Idrija and it is scary, because its a bit downhill over the river, so in one way the cart starts speeding up like crazy, but in the other way you must use your hands like crazy

I wish someone cared about me the same way Tom cares about obscure modes of locomotion.
I get the feeling that these are some of the coolest shots in a Tom Scott video, and the most TV host delivery he's done so far.
That last sentence really sums up why I like videos like this so much.
Like restoration channels, it's really not about preserving nostalgic things for eternity,
but understanding things that are gone now because we don't need them anymore, and thusly appreciating them.
Ah Slovenia, I’ve got a trip booked there for October and it just looks so amazing!
If you want to see more used one by locals AND tourists, you didn´t need to go into far mountains. We have one such bridge in the Czech republic as well, located near Liberec and it was built in 2010. It is near train stop called "Machnin hrad" and by typing words like "transbordér" and/or "gondola bridge" you should definitely have no problem of finding it. I will try to put a link to it in comment bellow, if it is not shown, I am not allowed :)

There are a lot of cable cars like this over rivers in the Pacific Northwest. They aren't publically usable, but were/are used by governement agencies for measuring river depths and flow rates seasonally or after major storms. Most of them are only accessible from one side of the river though, and the cables are angled such that they naturally slowly move out across the river via gravity (like a very slow zipline), then a winch pulls them back to the anchor station.
I think most of these measurements can be done remotely with sensors in the rivers now, but you still see a lot of the cable cars around, and quite a few are maintained in working condition.
The USGS has a bunch in the east, too. Probably they run the ones in the west as well.

This is so simple, yet such a quintessential and fantastic video of your Tom. About something unusual, intriguing, but also personal, posing a simple question of responsibility. Brilliantly shot, concise and just all round great. I can understand why you need to stop this kind of video eventually, at least in their relentless frequency, given the toll it surely takes to film a new video for every week, and all that goes into making the filming but I know I will miss your weekly videos once they stop. I hope between all the hard work you put into these, that you feel some pride in your work, as you certainly deserve to feel proud.

I loved tom talking about protecting these sites.
There are 2 TH-camrs called the proper people, they're urban explorers that make great docu style videos about old and abandoned places.
Not to scream about ghosts or whatnot, but to document the natural decay of those places.
Most times they release a video after the places has been demolished or is vandalized beyond recognition.
So others can still appreciate the sites without them giving the locations.
That is so cool. We should have more of them.
I suspect there's a thin line between "not enough traffic to warrant any kind of crossing" and "just build a bridge".

It’s very weird when the interviewee speaks your native tongue but in a bit of dialect so you don’t know whether you should be listening to him or reading the subtitles.

There's a lot of these all around the world. I've seen a few that connect small villages across valleys in Austria (but may only be used for goods?), and when traveling through Tajikistan saw a whole lot of them that locals (even youngsters) would use. terrifying!
In Austria? Without a motor? Really? I know some but they all have a motor. And yes some of those are river or valley crossings for hunters as well. Some are freight supply for mountain huts or the like.

I was in Kobarid last week and visited the WW1 museum. Im glad that some people are trying to maintain and preserve historic elements like this. It would have been cool to see it, but also things like this must stay a secret.
This place is just below "Javorca" Church of the holy spirit, which was for sure mentioned in the museum as it is one of the most significant monuments of that era

Where do you live? I'm sure there's something interesting or weird somewhere nearby - perhaps something so obscure most locals (you) don't even know about it.
I am trying to think of the pros for something like this VS. a rope bridge with a wooden deck.
Wind load - the cable car has a lower cross section and is made of heavy materials. It is less likely to stress the bridge supports year round. A wooden bridge must handle wind loads even when nobody is using it.
thats all I got. Anyone else have any ideas?
Rot, when a wooden deck starts to rot, it may or may not be safe. I know rust is similar, but wood needs changing every 2-5 years I think, and no amount of paint will change that. Metal, if properly maintained, could last 10-50 years.
Ballpark figures off the top of my head.
Three wire bridges can be found in Tasmania and southern New Zealand. You stand on a thick wire and put your hands on wires to your side to balance yourself. It is slow to walk across them, but they are safe and don't get washed away when a stream is in flood.
