Something no one (that I’ve seen) is talking about is the disability and divorce representation. The dad didn’t lose his arm from a sea monster, nor does he have some tragic backstory. He just is. And the fact that he’s disabled doesn’t have some huge impact on the plot. Also, Giulia’s parents are divorced and have shared custody. They don’t try to make this fact a sob story, or have one parent be “good” and the other “evil”. The dad is kind to the main characters, and we can see that the mom was kind to Luca and Giulia in the end credits. The best kind of representation shows things how they are: just normal parts of life. Some people just have divorced parents. Some people are just born without arms.

Honestly, I don't feel like every Pixar movie has to be an emotionally tormenting and existential film. They're great at that, but the goal of Luca was to be simple and beautiful and charming. And the visuals were stunning, it definitely looks different from other Pixar films, but I really like that. It's something very new and fresh from Pixar, and I honestly adore this movie

I think pixars reputation is kind of being used against them at this point. This movie isnt a cinematic masterpiece or emotional powerhouse like most of Pixar's earlier works, but the movie knows that. Its very down to earth, charming, and has a nice vibe and message with a lot more subtext than I would have thought. And its perfect that way. It doesnt try to be anything more than what it is, and I can respect it for that.

  • @camer4459

I totally understand the need for a more substantial story, but I really liked the fact that it was more of a feel good movie with a bittersweet ending. There weren't any high stakes, there wasn't an impossible-to-beat villain, and there wasn't any lifechanging lessons to be learned; just a movie about a trio of friends winning a competition and learning about the world. And sometimes, that's all you really need :)

    • @catelynh1020
      @catelynh1020 3 ปีที่แล้ว +49

Weirdly? It was like a ghibli film. Where it's less about high stakes, battles, and tension building to a climax.
Ghibli films are films you watch and *feel*. It's hard to describe it, but it's like how in Spirited Away, the villain isn't really a villain, more a goal, and some of the most memorable scenes are the calm, quiet ones that feel so intensely powerful like Chihiro on the train or interacting with No Face.

The old show is great for a while but people are gonna want new stuff to keep paying every month. Hence disney have to decide what to show for free and what to show for money. They gotta keep people paying while not losing money. It just how the business work. I know many people won't keep paying if every new movie required more money when you are already paying for the service. People will start canceling after they watch all their favorite show. I genuinely loved that there was no romantic relationships explored, but rather hinted at. I watched this movie with my toddler, and it was just about friendship - which is a score for me. If they made a second, and did it as a coming of age/teenage story - I could totally see Luca trying to decide if he liked Alberto or Julia...and I wouldn't be mad at it, I'd probably enjoy it. I saw the characters as younger than that when we watched it. Now seeing people comment about them being 12 or so, I can see the annoyance! I was thinking 8 or 9.

But it was also the kind of intimate friendship I want to see more, like with the whole "We're gonna live together and have a bunch of fun" and Luca imagining what that might be like. I actually found this art direction and stylisation far more charming than the likes of soul or toy story 4 which are in my eyes the "generic 3D animation movie" aesthetic these days. Also I love how mundane the story was. The characters have realistic goals and it's the bond between the characters that makes the story. Not the journey they take through the world. My only criticism was the beginning that felt a little more generic with the whole "I want to do something but my parents won't let me" trope. But after the first act I thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope Pixar learn a lot from the success of this movie. Soul had many more flaws in my opinion.

And the way their mouths would sometimes be really big was a little jarring but in a good and comedic way. I liked that the characters didnt have the classic 3d disney face.

Luca was never about love or relationships anyway. It was really just about the friendships he had with both Alberto and Giulia and how those friendships evolve over the summer. the characters were obviously gay... They are daydreaming of riding tandem on Vespas together multiple times. why not day dream having there own vespa each? There were literally 30 other vespas in the dreams...
-Movie cliche of enjoying spending so much time with someone where you lose track of time. vespa is a metaphor for their romantic relationship.
-Luca literally giggles like a teenage school girl in his bed thinking about the time he spent with Alberto and the "Vespa".
-Alberto defends Luca by saying "how great he smells"...
-"Im his friend, I know what he needs."
-Giulia finds out Alberto is a fish (gay) and Luca distances himself from Alberto in front of Giulia denying of who and what he really is a fish (gay). Making Luka accept who he really is. (Cliche in movies where gay people distance themselves from outted person as a defense mechanism)
-Alberto was visibly Jealous Luca was hanging out with Giulia..
-Scene when they are doing each other's hair with snail slime, turn around and give each other an approving smirk and nod. Followed by a panning camera shot from behind where they both put their arms around each other on the beach looking at the romantic, beautiful Italian beach sunset.
-"Alberto stop putting things in your mouth"
-"We need to win the race so we can run away together"
-Its literally a fish out of the water story...
-This is a disney movie, the director has to say its a platonic relationship. I feel like the writer director and producers had a bet to see how gay they can make it while. Still getting it approved by Disney.

People will have many different interpretations that often stem from personal experiences and view points
So, people who are LGBTQ+ or have some association to the community are likely too see things from that point of view
Another example of this was when people genuinely interpreted Hermione as black, and it was a lot of people who were black who saw her that way.
People will find ways to identify with fiction, especially if they are a demographic that gets less representation, and there's nothing wrong with that

your comment on the animation of this film legitimately hurt me as a longtime fan of animation and this industry. this is one of the best animated films pixar has ever done to me, and no, it’s nothing like dreamworks or illumination. the style is more akin to what sony pictures tries to do with their cgi animation, they made it more cartoonish and that does NOT at all mean weak. it was stylized, unique, the character movements mimicked how 2d animated characters would move a lot of times. the character designs, to me, were a lot more interesting than a lot of pixar’s recent, more realistic stuff. it was absolutely beautiful to look at. i am so bored when animation tries to mimic reality as much as possible when it’s a medium meant to be used for the unrealistic and has endless potential for creativity.
idk, i am personally not a fan of pixar’s fake deep films. they are convoluted and leave a lot of things halfway. this is the first movie of theirs ive loved since coco. AND YES IT WAS ABSOLUTELY GAY ☝🏼

as someone who studies animation, the scene where luca first gets on land and has to learn how to walk, i couldnt help but think how typical that was for animated film (which is probably also one of the reasons why they put it there, as a little wink). I could just imagine the animators trying to think "how would a fish try to walk" and having to act it out and having so much fun.
For some reason i also really appreciated all of the biking animation. There is just something so satisfying about mundane tasks/actions being animated beautifully.

Am I the only one who feels like Luca should've been longer? Especially at the beginning where they do introduce these two new worlds to us we really don't get a lot of time to explore them. If the film was given say even an extra 15 - 20 mins at the start just properly introduce the setting I think it would've come off as less rushed as it did. As far the...romantic side of things in the film, I'm kind of glad they just stuck with the platonic friendships in the end with the hint that they could turn into something more later on. Because firstly, the characters are kids! Can't be any older than say....10 or 11 I think? Can't remember if their ages were ever mentioned. Kids that young aren't focused on romantic relations with one another, they're far more like Luca - with dreams and wild imaginations. Alberto becoming jealous of Luca spending time with Julia would be a natural reaction for him. Luca is probably the first friend he's made and let's not forget that the kid probably has some kind of separation anxiety because of his dad up and leaving him parentless (do we know what happened to his mum?) for x amount of years before the film starts. I personally really like that they made it a platonic relationship between the three because we really don't see that often with films anymore where there are two male characters and a female character. Eventually one of the guys gets the girl and I'm so tired of that trope.
Anyway, rant over! Lol. I really enjoyed Luca myself, the only film gripe that I have with it was that it just felt a bit too short.

putting aside some of the unfulfilled storylines, I think it was intentionally meant to be simple and charming, because it was such a queer-coded story, but specifically targeted to children and LGBT+ adults who recall this time in their life, in a way other Pixar movies are intentionally ambiguous in who they are targeting (despite being touted as animated children's films - which we all know from experience is a lie and can hit you at any age) - which may have contributed to the strange gap you felt between this and other Pixar films.
The blatant allegory for the experiences of queer youth trying to make their way into the world and not being accepted shone through all the more bc the overall plot was super simple... there were hints here and there of possibly deeper themes, like how Luca and Alberto actually /weren't/ fully accepted by everyone in Porto Rosso, despite it seeming like that.. there are people who scoff and walk away shaking their heads, but it's intentionally focused on the circle of acceptance and happiness to show these kids you shouldn't focus on the people that don't matter, and find the good people that accept you as you are... Massimo being a renowned sea monster hunter (see: homophobe) but being the second after Giulia to accept Luca and Alberto was a very important message to put out there. Not everyone will, but people can change.
I don't particularly mind the lack of explicit mention of gayness or queerness, I don't think it was queer baiting bc the themes were so obvious, and exceptionally relatable, even if you whittled it down to purely just fear of The Other and feeling like an outsider and wanting to be accepted (see: Giulia, a human who connects with Luca and Alberto in this way but for different reasons)...

Really my whole interpretation on the 'that was the gayest thing I've ever seen' thing is I think, while the storyline wasn't meant to revolve around it, Luca definitely had some sort of underlying childhood crush on Alberto. Like one commenter said, it was something like looking back and realizing you had a crush on your friend before you even knew it. In a way, I'm glad that they didn't have any romance because I never really saw Alberto reciprocating the feelings until the end, though by then it wouldn't feel right as it wasn't evolved enough.

That's interesting because I felt like Alberto was the one who had romantic feelings for Luca.
Alberto began to become paranoid about the idea of Luca becoming closer with someone else (Giulia), as he felt his bond with Luca was special and didn't want to believe that anyone else could share Luca's feelings in the same way as he was. Also his entire goal was for him and Luca to always be together with their Vespa. The idea of offering to run away together and see the world has always been a romantic gesture and it becomes more obvious throughout the movie how Alberto is the one more focused on that goal than Luca.
The movie is told largely from Luca's perspective. It's possible he hasn't grasped the complexities of romantic relationships yet and will later look back on these moments when he's more mature to realise that Alberto may have had deeper feelings that he failed to identify in his naivety- making Alberto's choice to let Luca go so he could live a happier life even more tear-jerking. Maybe if Luca knew that Alberto loved him he would've said something more comforting or chosen to stay?

The people who would boycott it after seeing “DISNEY GAY LEADS” headlines are the exact people who need to see it and be taught about expectance through the beauty of this movie.

So please tell me they're not going to do with that"
And since there's no romance between Luca and Alberto or Luca and Julia you can't really say it went either way I can't go? There's no romance in this movie so it's not gay or straight, even though it's a very gay movie!

I liked how it was said that yes, luca is different, but he will learn that some people will like him and some people won't. And that's how life works. He was accepted by some pretty quickly even though there were some that were less sure. Luca was able to just be who he is and accept others' opinions of him

It is a genuine story of male friendship and I hate this idea that men can't be soft and loving with each other without being gay. Like people want to talk about toxic masculinity you get that when men have to be hyper straight at all times so they aren't seen as gay. Let boys be friends with other boys without going no kiss.

I just watched the movie and it is SO GOOD!
I’ve experienced many of the same situations of friendships that Alberto felt. I’ve felt lonely, I’ve felt scared that I’m losing a friend. I’ve felt like a waste of time, I’ve felt like no one wants me around because I get distracted, and I want to do my own thing, and it takes me forever to do anything.
I saw myself in Luca with feeling like I can’t do it. I’m not confident. I have self destroying thoughts. I have imagination. I want to follow my dreams and I just hope people accept me even though it sounds crazy.
The animation is so cute and stylized. I’ve never seen one like it. I love it very much.
It was the best balance of emotional and happy moments. I felt like I knew what they were thinking because all of the characters I could put myself in and I knew what they were thinking because I’d been there too.
I mean in not a sea creature but I wouldn’t be mad.
Also if anyone is wondering I have adopted Luca. I call dibs. If you kidnap him I will have to call the police.
Also if I ever get my own pet I will name him Luca. It’s such a cute name!!
    Such a wholesome movie 💗

The only thing I have to say about Luca is that it is DEFINITELY queer, even if the director says it isn't. And the reason that is, is that if you have to tell someone how to enjoy a piece of media then you have failed as an artist.
I can't play you a song I wrote and say "that was sad. You were supposed to feel sad listening to this." Thats not how art works.
So nomatter what the director says, it doesn't change the fact that this movie has like 50 references to being gay, from the shame of Luca saying "I'm a good kid" in the beginning, to his parents trying to send him away, to Luca's grandma saying that some people won't except him. Its a queer movie and it was very obviously made to be. The director just doesn't like it.

Huh, well I'm one of those guys you mentioned in the Soul video. I didn't love it. I don't think it's bad, I recognize how well is made, but I don't share the hype and respect people have for it. What you saw as the genius of not answering those big questions about life and death, I saw a failed attempt at being deep. Meanwhile I really connected emotionally with Luca, and found it visually more interesting than Soul

the earlier versions of the movie storyboard had luca have a crush on Giulia, like 'straight'-up love at first sight..
and it was a trio of boys and at some point during storyboarding, Alfredo was supposed to turn into a giant monster
they made it more gay than it was

I honestly think that I’m one of like 5 people in this world that actually liked Luca as a character more than Alberto. Like yes, Luca shouldn’t have screamed “Sea Monster!!” at his bro, but like Alberto shouldn’t have been blatantly disregarding and blatantly attempting to prevent Luca’s dream of going to school from coming true. Tbh, most people seem to empathize with Alberto more, but I empathize with Luca in that scene more.

I'm honestly glad that Luca is so light-hearted. I tried watching Onward but once I realized it was about two kids wanting more time with their deceased dad, I had to turn it off. My dad died very suddenly not even a month before that movie came out and it was just. WAY too soon. I also haven't seen Soul because I'm still not really ready to tackled stuff involving death or the afterlife or any of that. So yeah, Luca being a bit lighter in tone is a breath of fresh air for me.
I'd also argue that Luca does tug at the heartstrings, just maybe not quite as intensely as other Pixar films. The scene where Alberto outs himself and Luca acts horrified instead of supportive was. . . Rough. And the scene where Alberto revealed that his dad basically abandoned him, while kinda rushed and not really set up that well, definitely made my chest ache.

I remember watching this with a friend and we kinda talked about the LGBTQ+ relation with the movie for a bit and had a few moments where we both were like, “That was pretty gay.” And in that last scene, my friend said, “That was very gay, wait, am I allowed to say that?” and I just said, “Yeah, I think so. Luca and Alberto’s entire relationship felt very gay.” And I still don’t know whether or not to take the movie as Queerbating, probably not since I didn’t see any hinting or mention of the film possibly being gay. But overall, I still definitely have to ship the two.
