      Honestly, I bought it on release, and cba to refund it- but I don't think it's worth the $40.
      Boneworks is $30 without mods, so I feel like SLZ wanted to add on top of that game with an extra $10 for mod support, but even then I don't like the idea. Should lower Boneworks to $20, given it's not as polished looking as BL, and BL to $30 permanently. This is not to say BL beats BW in every way- the campaign was definitely shorter, but I do still like the majority of it. It's just the launch bugs I see pissing everyone off during things like the pillar climb and Motorway level.
      The feature where you can swap between standing and sitting play has gotten me killed a bunch in fights because I want to crouch manually behind cover, but the game takes it as taking a seat. Needs a toggle option.
      I'll be honest, I love BW in its entirety and will play it again and again for sure, but I feel like people loved the campaign for its freedom with player choice and some asset detail. BL does good in Descent with a similar design, but then it kinda falls off on the avatar levels. The bridge level was near empty and I deadass thought it was incomplete at first run. Valve did this better 18 years ago.
      BW's level design was very open and impressive and that's where BL really fails. They focused so much on the quest 2 (I could go on about that fucking headset forever) that the rest just felt "meh". It's good to have that optimization, but when it's your big selling point next to "oooo mods!" you're sacrificing quality elsewhere losing focus.

      This is a dumb stance, they are trying to make it have integrated mod support and be on multiple platforms, you can’t just port boneworks to quest and be done with it
      Apparently they are doing big overhauls of the avatar maps to make them more bearable like adding jump pads to moonbase and making the boids in climb not change ur avatar
      I assume the biggest issues right now are launch day bugs that will all be fuckups that will be fixed by the end of the month. Beyond that they might do overhauls of the in game systems

      @@3lectr0nix one of the clipboards states that everyone in fantasyland is controlled by an AI that has gone ultraconservative, formulating a cult-like following. They attack anyone that thinks outside of the reality bubble they have fabricated for themselves. After the introduction of weapons they begin killing those with stray thoughts. The supervisor thinks it's funny because they're not people. Monogon is aware of complaints but have chosen to do nothing but monitor the developments in the AI.
      The AI controls the NPCs (semi-self-sufficient nullbodies given personalities and set parameters on how to act). The NPCs will attack any among their rank that have thoughts that go against the AI guidelines. There's notes that employees do nothing but observe and fulfill the requests made by the NPCs at the wishing well. The NPCs are made by the in-universe SLZ, so when the NPCs ask for more people, Monogon would dress up Nullbodies. These nullbodies eventually merged into society and gained some intelligence, using tools and later hoarding weapons as detailed by the NPCs themselves.
      The heretic, i.e. you, is an NPC that spoke against the ultra conservative positions of the cultist omniturrets enforcing the AI's doctrine. You are one of several dozen they began killing.

      It's like a FNAF: Security Breach or No Man's Sky type situation. Those games seemed unfinished, clunky, buggy, and pretty rushed when they first came out, but overtime they started getting updates and DLC that started making them better and more polished. Hopefully something like that would happen to Bonelab because right now 40 american shmuckaroos for this game in it's current state is not good. It pains me to see what's happened to this game because SL0 usually puts in a ton of effort and really care about what they create, so I bet there's a pretty huge chance that Meta has something to do with this. I don't want this game to be forgotten in a couple more weeks and overshadowed by the game that it apperently was supposed to be more optimized and enhanced at.

      Seeing as he referred to needing mods in a "war" maybe they are intentionally holding off (or making as we speak) the "rest of the campaign" to be playable with full mod access? That would be a pretty wild move, and they are known for doing risky stuff like that.
      I cant say if all the decisions they have made are good (and some of the ones like the extreme lack of direction are blatantly bad), but they seem to know what they are shooting for, and its interesting to see a game company (any company in general really) do exactly what THEY want to do. Too many companies let go of their souls to appease the "average consumer" in my opinion. We will have to wait and see I guess, but I know they have big plans in the future, and I am glad they are shooting for something greater, even if they have hiccups along the way.

    I feel like it's not an inherently bad idea to make a "Boneworks but with mod support" game, but for being more expensive and far shorter than Boneworks, and relying so heavy on mods made with an SDK that isn't fully released yet, Bonelab just isn't worth it.
    Also you hit the nail on the head. If Pillar was in the Ascent chapter I think people would have hated it less. Having a hectic level in the middle of the ""climax"" (and after you're allowed to swap at will) would be better than having it right after you bumble around on the moon for however long doing nothing in particular.

  • @clankcode1437

    FINALLY, a sane Bonelab review that isn't blindly calling it a masterpiece!
    So I'm a huge Boneworks fan and I REALLY wanted to like this game. Though after beating the game I had this 'oh' realization that the game was a pretty noticeable downgrade from its previous iteration. The guns feel off, the climbing feels a lot more awkward than in Boneworks, the driving (while an interesting addition) feels awful, and the level design is pretty frustrating (*cough*Pillar*cough*). Not to mention that the campaign is only 6 hours, 3 of which you spend playing glorified tutorials that teach you the mechanics of each of the characters, and add no significance to the underlying narrative. I was REALLY hoping for this game to have the top notch world-building that Boneworks had, but it just wasn't there. As soon as the real story began to pick up again, the game was already over.
    People are hyping this game up as revolutionary because of the work that has been put into the complex and innovative engine that was rebuilt from the ground up for Bonelab. But here's the thing: I don't care. Now yes, I do get that it's super impressive what they have managed to do from a game development perspective (I'm a programmer, I really do get it). But as a consumer and player, I honestly don't care about the abstracted backend that makes the game work; I respect it, but I'm only here for the game's content first and foremost, and the game's lacklustre content has unfortunately disappointed.
    Another argument I keep hearing is that the game is ALL about the modding, and not necessarily the campaign experience. Now this is a point that frustrates me because the game was definitely not marketed exclusively as a modding tool, it was marketed as a 'successor' to Boneworks with higher modding capabilities. And even when you entertain the idea that this game is purely built for modding, the experience doesn't feel any less disappointing, because so far the majority of mods I have seen are maps and avatars. I did not pay $40 so I could have VRChat with beefed up physics.
    Overall, Bonelab is a marginally okay game. It does definitely have its moments and it can be fun at times. But it's pretty obvious that the game lacks direction and is a very clear downgrade from Boneworks, making it a disappointing experience.

      not saying bonelab is objectively good, but its kinda like war thunder; it isnt exactly fun by itself but i can have fun moments. It also seems like a pretty big stepping stone in standalone vr because they had to optimize this entire game for quest (which uses a phone chip) and they were actually able to pull it off. I agree that it was completely shit but I hope they will add in more content because the campaign was really underwhelming and kinda dry. Yes we have avatar changing but that only means that you can do a few more challenges to make the experience different. Im just trying to look ahead where SLZ can make a better, less glitchy, and longer game.

    When the credits started rolling in the cab, I genuinely thought it was one of those "fake endings" that games do sometimes, in which credits roll and then you just keep on playing until the real ending of the game. I just couldn't imagine the game would end in such an underwhelming and short notice, so I even explored the void main menu map in hopes to find a secret way to continue the campaign, but it seems this is all we get.
    I like and appreciate the mod support, but I'd say it's a bit expensive for what it offers as a base game, and some mechanics feel worse than in boneworks, such as the shooting and the climbing, which are both crucial for the gameplay core of the game.
    I can only hope that SLZ will continue to update the game with new content/features to make our money worth it.

    Pillar climb was definitely the worst even during testing for the game and when it originally came to my company it was very different, no boids (official void bird name then), no body log (omnitrix) and the boid ball (yes official name of that ball then) didn’t move so you could easily stab. When the body log was integrated they also added the boid switching mechanic making that level 10 times more painful.

But the fact that the mods that were made by the community are still not in the game 23 days after the games release is actually kind of sad. I’m sure in the future we will see native mod support on the game, and all the creativity from the community blasting from that idle arcade machine in the corner of the BoneLab hub.

  • @lbfather
    @lbfather 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If the game was 10, maybe 15 (at most) dollars than I'd be happy. Since bonelabS was disappointing, I revisited boneworks and realized that bonelabs actually has a superior physics engine (barring the jumping mechanics, which I doubt were intentional and I assume they will be fixed in a later patch) and that climbing and throwing things felt nicer actually in comparison. When ford climbed things, his model would push off of the surface you were trying to climb (almost making it feel unintentional that you were doing this.) In bonelabs, your player character does this thing where the model is suspended away from the surface by its feet, making your hands more like anchor points on a surface and making it much easier to climb. Throwing things has always been weird in vr games, at least in my experience with the oculus controller mechanics, but in bonelabs it felt relatively more consistent than its predecessor. It felt less janky, and I can appreciate it for that. For me, boneworks made up for its weak story because what you were doing was really fun and the environments you were in were pretty cool. The game had this sense of wonder to it. It made you curious as to what you were even doing, but that mysterious aspect made it feel like one of the most authentic gaming experiences I've ever had in a *long* while. The soundtrack made it so much better too, trying to fit into that "virtual" aesthetic. Bonelabs has a wonderful soundtrack, don't get me wrong, but it feels it would be more at place in a different atmosphere, one that bonelabs wasn't going for. Some of the tracks felt more like something I'd see in beat saber, and while they were cool and all they just didn't match the experience. I expect, with time, this game will be really good, but until they decide to implement an actual campaign/storyline (not before fixing its terrible level design already present,) it's not worth my $40. The avatar system was... off-putting. It doesn't make sense to me that the devs would implement a feature that conflicts so heavily with other key mechanics in the game. Little Big Planet 3, if you remember that game, had a similar system, but it was actually good because that mechanic was that installment's focus. The avatar system in bonelabs feels like it was just slapped in, and they designed the entire latter half of the game to teach people about it so they can play around with it using mods. This feels much more like an overexaggerated DLC than it does a proper sequel. All of these new features could be implemented in an update/DLC to boneworks, but now I'm sitting here writing this with a 40$ hole in my steam wallet.

    • @lbfather
      @lbfather 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally felt it really offputting some of the avatar models too. If not for cute fanservicey anime women and wack ass character design, it'd be better.
