This black & white educational/promotional film is about the Amazing New Mobiloil. There is no copyright and this is circa the mid to late 1940s as World War 2 is mentioned as having just passed.
Opening titles: Socony-Vacuum presents KEEP IT CLEAN!, The Story of an Amazing New Mobiloil for safer, cleaner engines (:06-:34). War footage, tanks, soldiers on the move. Construction vehicles. Tanks and war vehicles move along dusty roads and through some water. A man looks at an engine. Engineers study an engine. Close on an engine. Military vehicles move up a mountain road, through mud and sand. Men stop and try to fix a truck but can't as they are under fire. Trucks go through the snow during the second world war. Barrels of oil are passed between men. Engineers study motor oil and experiment with it. Factory exterior. Engineers experiment with oil. Cars drive through a city street. Farmer plows with a tractor (:35-3:41). Close on an engine in motion. Close on a car's engine. Diagram shows how free flowing oil is important and how oil should be double range for high and low temperatures. Close on engine parts. Diagram on an engine. A man talks to the camera about lubricants as he stands in front of an engine's diagram. Assembly line workers load an engine into a car body. Close on an engine. A hand removes some grim. Different kinds of pollutants for an engine are shown as well as water. Close on a tailpipe producing steam. The man points at the diagram (3:42-7:24). Oil is poured into a cup. Onscreen title shows us that "oil + air = lacquer, gum & sludge." A hand uses a knife to scrap metal. A pile of rust. A man paints a wall. He then puts lacquer on a door. He paints walls as well. A pair of pistons shown close up, before and after 2000 miles worth of driving. Stems are shown before and after driving. Bearing before and after the test. Engine conditions improved on the new Mobil oil. Close on a car engine (16:41-19:53). Plows move through dirt. Close on pistons before and after using the Mobil Oil on their engines. The name SOCONY MOBIL, still exists today, and the LOGO, on those products Is a GARGOYLE,’ NOT PEGASUS Mobil Makes several types of oil, & I BELIEVE , were the company which came up with synthetics, for use in JET ENGINES, , the oil used in SS UNITED STATES, wad MOBIL, the orchestra pot @ RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL , USES MOBIL OIL, Bach in JAMAICA MOBIL GAS had the GARGOYLE, until 1951 after the hurricane there, then PEGASUS STARTED UP NB: oil there was in IMPERIAL QUARTS, AS WAS THE GALLON OF GAS IMPERIAL . what was the typical oil change interval in those days? its 1 year/12k miles on my toyota book, what did manufacturers specify then? in the 70s it was typical 3kmiles/3 months, , was it shorter then?

Back in those days most cars didn't have a filter and if they did it was a bypass filter so oil changes were between a 1,000 and 2,000. The two finger symbol on a Kendall oil can was stating it was the first 2,000 mile oil made.

Oil intervals were extended because of both advances in oil tech, and advances in cleaner running engines and better machining.

yet by modern standards that oil is substandard and would barely meet lawnmower requirements. Poor additive packages means frequent oil changes.

How many people reading this didn't know that motor oils produced 70 years ago would be substandard to modern motor oils dang Chris thanks for the heads up I'll be sure not use 1950s oil in my 2019 Chevy

What's funny. Shaffer oil been around sence the late 1800. Synthetic....Shaffer beats Mobil one heads down in comparison...and no. I'm not a Shaffer rep.
