Really enjoy ur reaction & discussion.. most of the things Ian put out most of the times r definitely intentional, be it visually or sonically, and he enjoys when fans or even casual audience interpret/theorize things from his lore..
I'm not sure if I commented on your last video since TH-cam deleted my original account and all of my previous comments. But anyway I loved your reaction and how in depth you went! I have bipolar I and I think a lot of people with mental health disorders and/or neurodivergent are drawn to his art because of how he adresses the topic. I'll explain here the story of this MV based on what he has talked about it. Since Lean is already a fan probably some of this she already knows: Besides Ian himself, there are three main "characters" in this storyline: Mito, Mr Insanity, and The Hybrid. His first works (1st EP and 1st full album) focused on Mito while his 2nd EP, Dear Insanity (this one), focused on Mr Insanity and that's why they're so distinct. He's going to release an EP focused on the Hybrid in a few months. He delayed it so he could make a bigger project. The other video you've seen 'Limbo" introduced The Hybrid as a concept. Here I'll only talk about Mito and Mr Insanity since they're the ones on this video. As you've said the root of DID is severe and/or repeated childhood trauma. As a coping mechanism, the mind of the child unconsciously creates a "new person" that could deal with the trauma for them otherwise it would be unbearable. That way only one or some identities will remember the trauma. Mito was that alter ("alter" is the term used now instead of "personalities"). created by the mind to deal with any traumas and to be the one who remembers them so Ian can forget. He is depicted as a fallen angel and is represented in MVs by wearing black, with a deep voice, missing an eye, and a ring with an eyeball. The association of Mito with an eye is because the “eye” symbolism is important to Ian as a visual director and he recognizes that the best lenses in the world are the eyes. When he switches into Mito and his world flips, it’s like he loses one eye. When Ian wears the ring, it is also a coping mechanism for Ian to subdue Mito’s power and block him from taking complete control of him. The only Korean word that Ian uses in his whole discography (thus far) is ‘눈’ (in the song “Mood”) which means eye. Mr Insanity is the manic “highs”. Or when there are exclusively manic symptoms it could be referred to only as “mania”. Mania is a period of euphoria or high irritability, with increased drive and decreased sleep. It can lead to psychosis and exhaustion if left untreated. Psychosis is when there’s a break from reality, the person doesn’t know what is real and what’s not. They start to hallucinate (seeing something that isn’t there) or have delusions (believing something that can’t be true) "The Other Side" is the place where the whole story unfolds, which actually is his conciousness, where these alters exist. The protagonist of this album is Mr Insanity, the one that is his manic episodes. This album is all about how Mr Insanity came to be and his journey into “The Other Side”. Because of the mania Mr Insanity is usually chaotic and doesn't care about consequences. In the story, there's a door that Mr Insanity's chaotic self is trying to open which represents the traumas. Mito being the protector, won't let this happen since Ian isn't supposed to know anything about it. Growing up, Ian thought that everyone remembers all of their dreams until he started asking others. Lucid dreaming has always been normal for him. It is the same with sleep paralysis which he experiences about 6-7 days a week. During sleep paralysis he hears things, although he doesn't see them. However, this is not scary for him. It's just something he grew up with. In those lucid dreams there are a lot of doors. Going through the wrong door could turn the dream into a nightmare and that's what inspired the "door" analogy. Sometimes he dreams as Mito, sometimes as himself. When he dreams as Mito, it's almost like Ian is intruding on Mito's dream, like a spectator. The only way to get to “The Other Side” (his consciousness) is through lucid dreaming. At the beginning of the video, Ian is sitting at the desk writing the letter from the song “Famous Last Words”, a letter to his future self Mr Insanity. While Ian is sitting, there's also a howl and he mentions 'wolves' in the lyrics: ("Oh, bless my heart / When the wolves take me away"). “Wolves” are a huge symbolism for him because of the werewolf transformation aspect that represents his DID switches. Here we see Mr Insanity develop. We see Ian/Mr Insanity’s journey venturing into "The Other Side" as he slowly goes further into madness and pursues the key that unlocks another door/memory. During this journey, Mr Insanity is met by pink villagers which are essentially Mito's minions trying to stop him (notice how they only have one eye like Mito). Mito is represented by the black smoke. Ian doesn't even know he's taking the form of Mr Insanity. He doesn't know it himself but he's somehow feeling different. Every single time he goes through the doors he loses a bit of his sanity. He says to himself "I'm sane", and even so, still loses grip on reality. “Don't Go Insane”, as the title suggests, is about trying to not go insane while simultaneously, still losing your mind. In the story, the most advanced version of Mr Insanity, when he succumbs to his madness, is completely blind because he no longer needs to see. Ian said he holds the entire universe within himself. This is probably why at the end of this song, right before the bridge, he says "Can't see...". Going back to the quill at the beginning, it’s used because they wanted to bring the concept of something that goes way back in the past. It means that it dates back to medieval times (not specifically, but just a long time ago). Mr Insanity continuously breaks into these worlds/doors and we don't know for how long he's been there for. About The Green, it isn't known yet his role, just that he is Mr Insanity's sidekick. Thank you if you read all that Lol And I'll be waiting for more reactions. React to the Miito Movie and Skins Demo! I actually made a PDF explaining all of his storyline. If you're interested give me your email and I'll send it to you.
Wow, that all makes so much sense. Thank you for explaining because even though I like him a lot, I don't have enough backstory or know enough of his songs to truly have pieced this together. I knew it was related to his mental health but did not have the background knowledge to really put a finger on every aspect of the story. I really love how it unfolds so beautifully, and reading this, I could picture each scene as I know them so well now. Having context just makes this masterpiece more so. Thank you so much - Lean

Ian is such an interesting dude lol, i hope you’ll get into him in more depth in the future bc his music and himself is just amazing!! also! the green (his official character name) role in his lore has not confirmed and is still being developed currently lol
Ian mentioned in an interview that in so beautiful mv (i hope you watch it ) all the black and white scenes were Mito (his other personality /not him basically) . It was the first time his switch was recorded on camera and he remembered nothing of it . He also said it was hard and scary to edit the mv .
Maravillosamente intuitivas queridas, una bonita muestra de los cerebros diferentes, hermosos, creativos, únicos, como, el de nuestro Precioso Cristian Yu o DPR Ian.
