I was born in Norwich in 1945; the family moved to Great Yarmouth in 1956, thereabouts, as my father took the position of superintendent at the power station. That’s right, that tall chimney in these pictures ( 365 feet tall he told me ) , somewhat of an eyesore, it worked well for many years. Until the new gas fired station was built, still there,. Anyway now I’m 79 living in Vancouver Canada since 1964, thank you these pictures bring back fond memories . 🥹🥹👍👍

Gosh, this brings back some memories. I remember taking a girl called Debbie on the big dipper there. We were both on holiday at the Caister-on-Sea holiday park at the time during the May spring bank holiday. Holiday romance! ❤ Wonder what she's doing now?

Loved this montage. Always thought I remembered that the sea used to come up under the piers so it’s good to see these showing the evidence 😀

Yes the sea used to go under the piers up to about the mid 1990s i think

At 1:17 Noah's Ark in Joyland.
At 2:39 Mike and Bernie Winters on the Britannia Pier (1974). My mum was working in theatre bar then!
I worked a summer season (1988) at the Leisure Centre.
4:35 The Swimming Pool. I did my 100 yards swimming certificate there. It was freezing even in the summer.

Who else remembers the knickerbocker Glory made of Lard that was on the front counter of Bevans Restaurant and was placed in the chiller every night ?.
Holidayed in Hemsby and Yarmouth quite a bit when I was younger ( still had the 3 dunes at Hemsby that you would have to climb over( the white stairs ).
WoW….How much Great Yarmouth has changed ( and NOT for the better ! ).
It was thrilling as a child just walking up Regents Road and all the small shops and nik nak places, these pictures reminded me so much of the Great times we had there, just looking at the illumination as they were compared with now !.
It is becoming a Dirty and disheveled place and even the council takes no pride in keeping it clean,if you are brave enough take a walk down the old side streets that used to be filled with quaint well kept B+B places and Chip shops and Cafes and now the streets are filled with converted flats full of undesirable people.
This Year 2023 in the Summer when all the Holiday makers come down will be interesting,it’s more a pub crawl nowadays and lots of people getting drunk and fighting ( some of the hotels are now re-used as allocated accommodation for illegal immigrants ) and whereas I have no problem with these people being there, I think you are going to have a lot of people who come on holiday and they aren’t going to be Happy.
Mix in with the equation drink and it’s a accident waiting to happen ?!!. I’m not being racist I’m being realistic !!.
The people who have lived there all their lives are moving out away to Quieter places in the Country, house prices have slumped,we saw a Recently renovated Hotel/Holiday apartment with 12 bedrooms and a 3 bedroom Apartment for the owner attached,8 of the bedrooms en-suite being Sold for £100,000 😳.
Sounds a lot but it’s peanuts.
You don’t feel safe walking around anymore and the people walking around ( more like barging ) are and can be pretty aggressive, wasn’t that long ago someone was stabbed on the seafront with a knife probably bought at Pownalls !.
Why do people need Rambo knives and machetes ?,unfortunately they aren’t very age conscious in the selling of these things anymore because a sale is a sale !.
There’s a Restaurant for sale down Regents Road with a Home attached and it won’t Sell ?!! Why ? It’s fully kitted out and even has a long length lease attached ? It’s even being offered as a Rental and there are No takers ?.
No I’m afraid Great Yarmouth is on the slippery slope to being a Sh1t hole.
Such a shame for a once amazing beautiful Coastal Resort

@@GreatYarmouthPhotosWebcams The Eclairs would have been one of my Mum’s favourites,She was a bugger for those things, most Saturdays Mum would do Shopping in Cambridge in the Afternoon and treat us to a 4 pack of M+S Chocolate Eclairs ( what we didn’t know until later in life was that she would treat herself to her own Box Lol 😂).
