    The worst thing you can do to a comedian is just not laugh.
    Cancelling them only gives notoriety, not laughing makes them forced to reconsider why the joke isn’t funny.

    The fact that he was trying to “appeal to a male base” and immediately goes to derogatory jokes about women shows that there’s an issue with “bro” culture. If that’s what you have to do to fit in with the boys, maybe you need to take a more critical look at what men find funny and why.

    I like how Noel Miller has a majority female audience and shows no insecurity about that whatsoever and in fact embraces it. His very recent stand up special was very much geared to his audience (especially with his abortion bit) and he showed how proud of and thankful to his female audience he is. Matt Rife could have really taken notes from that comedy special. It's called "Stop Crying" and y'all should watch it.

    As an autistic person that first bit Ethan showed was pretty funny. But honestly though I’ve heard funnier comedians tell more offensive jokes better. He doesn’t really offend me, the jokes in his Netflix special just aren’t that great IMO.

    • @KealohaHarrison
      @KealohaHarrison 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +54

      @@Greeezy not every autistic person is nonverbal but it doesn’t mean we’re any less autistic than those who are. When people say “autism is a spectrum” it’s less like a sliding scale from “a little autistic” to “very autistic” and more like a wheel of various human behaviors that neurodivergent people either do very well or don’t do very well compared to each other and even compared to neurotypicals. For example I’ve always struggled with reading, social interactions, and doing ordinary chores/menial tasks, but despite that I’ve been able to take care of myself basically since I was a child as I taught myself how to cook my own meals when I was about 9 or 10. And I can hyperfocus on something if it’s one of my special interests like music, movies/TV, fashion, history, and pop culture etc.
      TL;DR, autistic people aren’t a monolith and you can’t tell how autistic someone is based on your experiences with how autistic someone you’ve met previously is. As I always say, if you’ve met one autistic person then you’ve only met ONE autistic person.

    • @sloop3720
      @sloop3720 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      same, obviously not an offensive joke but it wasn’t the best autism joke i’ve seen. the part after that with the lady who gave him a drawing was honestly just sad to watch though. not offensive but just made me feel bad for the lady because he was clearly making fun of the fact that she made him something instead of doing actual crowd work and making jokes out of that. i can just imagine making something for someone i look up to and them saying “this is going on the fridge!” i think a good example of actual good crowd work is jessica kirson, my god she is hilarious.

      As a DV survivor, DV jokes can 100 percent be enjoyed. Best way to get over something is to laugh.
      His joke wasn't offensive to me. It was just poorly executed and seemed way off his usual style. Anything can be laughed at, it just needs to be, ya know, actually funny. It was just a sad bomb, but I don't want to pitchfork the dude. Would love to know his thought process behind it.

  • @wompppwompwomppp

    Statistically speaking when your audience is mostly women, a good handful of those have been victims of DV or assault. You're wanting to go to a comedy special and laugh, not be reminded of trauma from your past. If he were to joke about DV, pick on the people who think it's okay to hit a woman, not the woman getting hit.

    People keep misinterpreting the backlash he got as people being “too sensitive these days” but it’s not even that. His comedy special was lazy. The jokes were Facebook memes I saw 10 years ago, and 80% of them were just women-hating. Not funny, light-hearted jokes, he genuinely seemed triggered. It’s clear that Matt is insecure and resentful of his fan base because he shot to fame only after he became conventionally attractive, and not the 10+ years prior when he was trying to break onto the scene at this level.

    But it works for him, he has a very diverse fan base. Wanna know why?

    Matt Rife is good at crowd work, but his written and planned stand-up is not. Maybe if he works on it some day he will be funny, but some people just... Don't have it. They're just good at improv. He should've just kept riding the "good looks" train that he lucked into, much like PLENTY of women do in Hollywood, as he kept improving his long-form stand-up routine.

I feel like something that is understated in this conversation is that I’ve heard clips of him on podcasts(I think it was actually Whitney Cummings lol) of the cat calling and sexual harassment he has experienced from his loving female fan base. Not trying to say one justifies the other, but the people that are mad about that joke, and the people that objectify(if they admit it or not) him have a high over lap. Nothing is worst then people who do not understand the difference between shock humor and dark humor. Shock humor is unoriginal, low effort, and lame. Dark humor is used to take an offensive concept or idea and twist it into a unique humorous social commentary. It requires a lot of talent and thought to pull off. For example, shock humor is when a 12 year old kid says the N Word or some other racist thing on xbox live to get a quick reaction. Dark humor is when Dave Chappelle masterfully created a dark and humorous social commentary take on racism by creating the character Clayton Bigsby the blind black white supremacist. Which required a lot of offensive humor but also a lot of creativity and originality. Another example of expertly delivered dark comedy is Andrew Schulz bit about blackface in the military. Its an offensive topic but the way he delivers it in an original format while mixing in self deprecation makes it humorous.

So when they criticize stuff like that with Rife, especially since it's so minor compared to the stuff Tom and Christina say, it makes me feel like Ethan and Hila probably aren't as woke and as left as they present and that its probably just a big facade for their very woke liberal audience. Which is fine if they aren't, I'm not super woke myself but it's like they'd probably attractive an older audience that could handle being a little less woke if they were more upfront about it. Ethan was kind of screwed by circumstance. He used to collaborate with iDubbz and Filthy Frank when those were the edgiest channels and he was edgy himself. Now that edgy content can't be monitised, all three of those guys have tried to pretend that they aren't edgelords to their bones. The edgelord audience from back in those days is pissed off at Ethan because he does wokescolding on his podcast now and doesn't cater to that audience anymore.
      I for one think that it is a travesty that TH-cam content can be demonitised for being too edgy. There was a crazy racism problem on TH-cam up until probably the end of the Obama years. I remember there was this one video called 'No Apologies' which was just saying how white people shouldn't apologise for slavery and colonialism because these things brought enlightenment to the more savage races. It had hundreds of thousands or million of views. It was gross and crazy. Ideally, TH-cam could design a system that polices hate content like that but allows for edgy, uncensored jokes or violence or uncensored news coverage. People saying 'unaliving' and 'essay' instead of suicide and rape is genuinely cartoonish, dystopian and completely pointless. I'd rather keep both the hate content and the uncensored good content than live in the censorship hell that TH-cam has become.

It's a v boomer move to be like "I'm not shopping here anymore. You've lost my business!" And we know how lame and useless it is. But the young people do it online. If you dont like someone or something, simply remove yourself and move on with your life. But it feels like most people are just living in hate. Whatever they hate they focus on. Esp politically. But then it.bleeds into everything and you eventually become what you hate. That's my opinion anyways.

I think that’s what people are forgetting when they do these stand up routines, just because you made the joke doesn’t mean it’s funny. Not everything out of your mouth is going to be a hit. I’m surprised with someone that basis his stand up off improv that he couldn’t read his audience enough to know that wasn’t the right move.

      rationalizing how to properly act when you got audience captured in the cases where the audience belongs to an universally good category according to twitter.
      Matt Rife is the single most audience captured comedian of the the current times, and you people talk about this shit on a daily basis with alt right, joe rogan and that type of camp. here however you're coaching how he should have done PR to maintain the female toxicity vibe as a product. despite a fuckton of women at his shows harassing him, which is actually what made the dude despite women audience in comedy and 99% why he went so hard on that.
      which when you make example comparisons is the exact same thing as the bill burr philly incident or him shitting on his low IQ beer belly audience. I guess insulting someone's IQ and inability to be successful at life is a kinder joke than DV. those men could have changed it and just chose to become lawyers. you're so apolitical and empathetic.
      the difference, is biblical levels of hypocrisy on your part. your belief that women can't be stereotyped but guys can (and should, as this very podcast showcases copious amounts of). that's literally it. that's why Matt Rife changed his tone, incidentally. because he got enough of your constant fake shit.
      he said this multiple times in previous podcasts, he absolutely hates moral high ground women on the internet acting like moral authorities and vitcims and then treating him like a sex object including physical sexual harassment.
      oh what's what? "you didn't touch him yourself?" sucks innit, still your fault, dedicate time to route out toxicity within your category because without the effort of women we will never get rid of this culture of toxic women - you made up those rules and you follow creators literally adopting this rulebook for their content creation. now it's all you. Do better.
