  • Mr. Ronnie C. Chan is the Chair of Hang Lung Group Limited and its subsidiary Hang Lung Properties Limited, both publicly listed in Hong Kong.
Ronnie is one of the very few leading thought and business leaders, who has a unique, deep and first hand insight into the inner workings of key powers of East (China) and West (The United States).
In BRI D24 we discuss the challenges being faced by a rising civilizational power and how old habits of a zero sum game and US notions of rivalry may take the United States back to its founding spirit of isolationism.
Ronnie eloquently makes the argument that the impatience at the heart of the political culture of United States, and the urge for decoupling, combined with the weaponization of US Dollar and technology, are the key factors eroding trust among rivals and between allies.
We also discuss the tribulations in real estate market in China; and how the recent and continued Covid-19-related lockdowns are not just a hindrance for the national economy. But Ronnie cautions that the latter needs to be understood in the context of the traditional, cultural, and century old social contracts between the Chinese government and its citizens. China needs to be measured, also, Ronnie argues because the risks of a major pandemic in China will reverberate across a still weak and vulnerable global economy.
Ronnie founded and chairs the China Heritage Fund, which preserves and conserves heritage architecture of historical significance in China, and is a co-founding Director of The Forbidden City Cultural Heritage Conservation Foundation in Beijing, and had previously served as Vice President and Advisor of the China Development Research Foundation in Beijing. He spearheaded Hang Lung's expansion into Mainland China in 1992, developing, owning and managing world-class commercial complexes in key tier one and tier two cities.
Ronnie is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Chair Emeritus of the Asia Society and Chairman of its Hong Kong Center, and Co-Founder and Chairman of the Centre for Asian Philanthropy and Society. He serves or has served on the governing or advisory bodies of several think tanks and universities, which include: Peterson Institute for International Economics @PIIE , World Economic Forum, East-West Center, Pacific Council on International Policy @PacCouncil , Eisenhower Fellowships, The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation, University of Southern California, Indian School of Business @ISBedu , The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Yale University, Tsinghua University @Tsinghua_Uni , and Fudan University.
The BRI Dialogues provide support and insights for senior executives and decision makers in both private and public sectors, on China and its BRI programme of activities.
Our overriding aim is to establish a clearer appreciation of how to ‘COPE’ regarding China. COPE in BRI Dialogues means how to deal with Complexities, to capitalise on Opportunities, to understand her return to Power, and brace for the impact of Externalities of China.
So here is D24 (Dialogue 24). Sit back and get engaged in the conversation and share your thoughts, comments and insights.
We are excited about this bi-monthly series of serious conversations and are grateful to you for giving up some of your valuable time to tune in.
