I've heard a lot about the style of play in the NBA and the 3 pointer problem. Only a few teams and for sure the Celtics are built to play that way, but most other teams aren't but still chuck up as many 3s as possible. I don't mind it as much, but it seems like most people don't like it. For the Celtics, i did wish they didn't shoot so many, but they are still at least built to play that way.
I dont know who says its not exciting. Its very exciting in my opinion and open ups the floor for any type of offensive movement including in the paint. The real problem in declining viewership is because people are watching games in clips. Especially younger people. Cant understand why because that ruins the fun of watching the game as a whole.
Like and comment for the Algo overlords! I’m lucky enough to work with a few “diehard” Celtics and NBA fans one of them being my CEO. The nostalgia portion and remembering in fondness great games and hating on the 3 pt fiesta that is happening is mostly the talk around the water cooler. I asked my CEO if he could go back to one classic, Game 7 1994 NBA finals and see if he could stomach watching the first ten minutes, two days later he says “geez serious hand checking, bad spacing etc” we only remember the highlights of such older games never the amount of fouls, turnovers and many misses from two point range jumpers. Nothing will change my love for this sport and the team that I follow. I cannot speak for the casual fans.
I have no problem with 3s. The tide will turn as defenses adjust. Regarding assist numbers: I would argue that the 80s Celtics assists were more enjoyable to watch as the passes had a greater degree of difficulty and were most often to cutting team mates as opposed to someone standing int he corner or above the break. Also, fast breaks today are often hugely disappointing in that you have 3 players streaking down court, but then 2 of them just run to the 3 point line instead of cutting to the basket. The only rule change required today is to give the fouled team choice of free throws or the ball and a new shot clock
It’s another tool in the tool box. I do agree there are less power drives in the paint like centers (with Shaq, Robinson, etc.), but some guys hit 3’s some can’t. ISO basketball bothers me more than the 3’s because it’s 1 guy trying to assert his will against an entire team and why when JT & JB only do so with severely advantageous matchups is it good. Otherwise, they usually turn it over or take a bad shot. Are there more blowouts, yes. But…teams can also come back if you don’t keep on the pedal…so by mid 4th quarter it can be interesting lol
In my opinion fans are longing for the return of athleticism to the NBA. People want to see dunks and blocks. In my opinion part of the problem is that players do not want to drive and dunk due to risk of injury (e.x Morant).
I'll admit, I'm sometimes nostalgic for the days when the three was this more singular weapon---when Chris Ford or Bird would just DAGGER the other team with one three. But c'mon. Not only will getting rid of it make the game WAY more boring (watch the 24 second violations EXPLODE too), you'll have LESS passing/cutting too. Just the other day PP was talking about deliberately opening passing/driving lanes for the Jays. All of that will be gone.
Ah! Floor spacing almost right. It's not the spacing but the floor itself. It's too small. Widen the playing surface make the rthree point line a true arc (no more cheap threes). Secondly move the three point line. Bring it back a foot. If there are still too many, bring it back some more. Make the three ppint shot a real challenge! The dream that the owners would give up a row of seats to accomadate the game, what am I thinking?
The increasing prominence of the 3 point line has really marked the death of the traditional big man. Not many guys are playing the post game any more (think Parish, McHale, Ewing, Kareem, Hakeem, Shaq, Robinson etc). It's pretty much a dead art at this point. Sure guys like KP, Jokic and Embiid occasionally play the post but it's def diminished. Maybe that's for the better but it feels like a thing that added more variety to the game.
I mean in response to ratings are down.... how easy is it to watch NBA games if you don't have cable TV ? NBA league pass: you can't watch your home team. TH-cam TV is 80 bucks a month. So most people put up the jolly rogger flag and say yo ho yo ho it's not about the 3's
Agreed that the 3's spread the floor, open up lanes, and actually add to the game at least in the case of the Celtics. The real problem may very well be that players don't want to run around and give 100% on D because it doesn't make the highlights as often and/or their system is set up that way so they hide guys on D to get the most out of them on O. That's the real difference between today's game and past eras, IMO. The superstars these days are ripped but many of them don't want to move their feet beyond the usual 10' circumference and actually sweat; they just want to look cool on the floor and complain about the 3's being launched over their heads. Extreme case but Wilt played nearly 82 games in the majority of his seasons -- and nearly 48 mins in those games. Wouldn't see anyone do that today. "Hey, must be the money....."
The game has and always will adjust to the landscape around it. Era's of sports rise and fall as the times go and new defensive techniques are established. My personal opinion is this. The NBA officiating from the half-court line to the three point line is in my opinion the worst refereed thing in all of American professional sports. Teams are allowed to get away with moving screen after moving screen. The slightest touch of the shooters hand, body, or landing space is three shots regardless of the shooter flopping or not. When pressed plays just bait fouls and the defender has no choice but to give them room to fire a three. But at the end of the day just like the Tush Push, Rodgers Rule, Zaza rule, it only becomes a problem when a team gets really good at it, that team happens to be the Boston Celtics.
Yep. I wonder how many of these experts have watched some games from 60 years ago? Sometimes, some really good passing there. A lot of times? Dudes standing around, MUCH closer to the basket, and a LOT of bad shots. Some REALLY boring basketball. The people calling this "unwatchable"... I'm convinced are not actually watching--definitely not the Celtics. Or they're watching Jordan Poole or Lamelo and burning their eyes out.
The passing is why we are so good. If we were just jacking 50 3s a game that would look bad. But we are creating 45 of them probably a few that were just thrown up like every team does
Prayton Pritchard and Derrick are the only players who score a perfect three, the rest is, a hit and go, KP not a perfectionist, most of the younger players have perfected their three point shooting, Buddy Hield, Cam.
The problem that everyone has is the problem I never saw with the Spurs dynasty team either. The ball moves, the ball finds its way to the open guy. It is beautiful basketball. What I think is more astonishing is that when Jayson or Jaylen go to the old school game, we criticise them. The problem people have is the Celtics have solved basketball for a small period & until the league adjusts, you don't see where they can lose (other than a really bad shooting night)
@NoNameWillBeGiven778 damn, you got me. The pass move .5 basketball the Celtics are playing cannot possibly be anything like the Spurs because the Spurs shot mid-range shots rather than 3s.
@NoNameWillBeGiven778 your opinion. You claimed the launch a bunch of 3s in the last comment, so I assume you spend a heap of time watching Boston basketball. The Celtics shoot a large number if wide open shots due to ball movement which happens to be 3s.
I love the 3 ball, as long as you have a team that can make them and make the extra pass to get great shots.

Gotta love the mean gene shirt ❤
Thanks for the mailbags especially in these droughts. Maybe a Tom Mailbag day?
Great idea!
Remember, kids. Three pointers only become an NBA problem when it's the other team making them and destroying your favorite team.
🎯
The Celtics are shooting about 20 more 3s per game than the Warriors were from 15/16 - 19/20
Or when the ratings dip to a 10 year low. lol
@@CLNS_Nick But was it really the threes though? Nothing about load management, player empowerment and the wider availability of streaming services?

The Nba in the late 80 and early 90 made a big deal about cleaning up the pant. The 3ball did exactly that.
