- Destruction, death of innocents, warfare…all themes that you will find in the pages of the Old Testament. The Bible is not free of pain, suffering, and evil, sometimes making it difficult to read. Why did God allow these things? Was it his will that these things happen? If you are asking these questions, good. Dr. Andrew Swafford joins Jeff Cavins to answer these questions and lead us to a better understanding of why bad things happen in Sacred Scripture.

The bible stories become our story in our time, helping us to learn from the past.
Thank you so much for this material! One day my Bible will look like bibles you both carry! Thanks for putting that desire in me to learn more each day!

Thanks!
Thank you for supporting Ascension!
We deserve God’s wrath; it is His mercy that is so surprising.
How thankful I am for this discussion! Thank you Jeff and Dr. Swafford! My 13 year-old son asked me about Achan's sin and this video will help me discuss this topic with him!
Amazing session! Thank you so much for your time and teaching. I participated in my parish's Bible study on Hewbrews using your Ascension course and also loved it so much, and gained so many blessings from it. God bless!
Such a great discussion, thank you to all involved.
Faith in Jesus is crucial in spiritual conversion and intimacy with Jesus. Spiritual death is scary. Living in Communion is crucial. Our mission is to love God with all of who we are! Be sensitive to injustice.... Do something about injustice as a mission! Don't let it wreck my peace and prayer life.
Man! If I didnt know better I thought I saw Clark Kent with Jeff Cavins walking us through the Bible lol could help sport the resemblances.
Joshua "fit" the battle of Jerchio.
“The Old Testament...hope for a New Creation...has been fulfilled in Christ...their fulfillment has already broken into the present; indeed, this is the glorious reality of divinization brought to us in the New Covenant...” -Dr. Swafford, “A Biblical Look at Divinization”
Don't focus on negativity but share Good News more! Moral order is important to our salvation. Samson falls short, and so do we. David completes what Joshua started. Israel chosen, and Covenant is our strength.( Bridal spousal relationship vs political????-- need this explained more)
A full cup of iniquity brings judgement by God.
Prayer- read Psalm and Gospel daily
- read spiritual materials

Bible: I mark mine too as well as my Missal at Sunday Mass.
I identify with Saul who became Paul! It shows the depth of forgiveness of God and that we must not judge. Judgement is for God.
Oh boy! Talking snakes, donkeys & bushes, followed by seven headed monsters in Revelation. LOL
Any recommendations for Hebrew English bible and Greek and English as well? Where can I buy it?
it was LITURGICAL warfare, more often than not...the Ark often proceeded....Jericho was a Liturgical procession
Just casual friendly genocide apologia here
Although this helps somewhat, I don't find this a satisfactory answer. That is, it makes sense for God to allow one people to invade another due to societal sin, as He can bring good out of evil providentially. It also makes sense for God to command Israel to attack adult evildoers. The issue most people have, though, is that (unless I'm misremembering) the book of Joshua says that God COMMANDED Israel to kill children, which would mean God commanded them to commit an evil act, which is impossible.
I guess my question is, is it that God did not actually command them to murder children (was this only a rhetorical flourish?) or did He indeed command them to kill children, in which case, what would possibly justify that?
Could you please share the chapter/verse you're referring to? Thank you!
@@ashwith Sorry for the late reply. Life has been hectic. I couldn't find a specific verse in Joshua, though it's been a while since I read it. It says in Joshua 6:20-21 that the Israelites killed the mean and women, young and old, in Jericho, so I may have extrapolated that to mean God commanded it. It does say in Deuteronomy 20, though "in the cities of the nations the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. Completely destroy them [...] as the LORD your God has commanded you."; that seems to indicate God commanding total war.
