The airlines should hire you as a consultant to help develop training for all people working at the airport to better assist blind travelers. You are amazing Joy ❤️
I would love that actually. In fact, DFW Airport reached out to me and apologized for the unhelpful assistance I received there. They haven’t seen this video yet, but they said they were going to pass on my other video along to the customer service to help with training. I really would like to do more though
Geez, I know it’s not their fault, but a lot these people really need training on how to help people with disabilities especially blindness. You are so nice to everyone, Joy, even if they aren’t quite as nice to you. You are a peach.
I’ve learned a lot on how to help assist people by watching Joy’s videos. Funnily enough, I was actually asked by a blind woman at college to help guide her to one of the food places and I was really nervous but it worked out fine! I think some people, like myself, get a little flustered because we try to help and don’t want to mess up! I’m always happy to help someone but I’m not perfect so I really appreciate Joy’s positive attitude and patience with people trying to assist. I think there was a slight language barrier here which makes it more difficult but Joy is very gracious and understanding with everyone which definitely helps. Hopefully the airport employees can do a little research on how to assist people a little better in the future.
LaDonna was amazing! If only everyone were like her. I sometimes wonder if there is a language barrier some of the time. It’s nice that you’re experimenting with different ways to navigate. I agree that you should do whichever way feels best to you. Love you Joy! 💜
Ugh so frustrating how they just pass you off without telling the person they are passing you to that your blind and what you need, and that they need to guide you, etc. Man so much training needs to happen in the travel industry. You and Molly could create a great educational training program for these airports!

Wheelchairs should always be completely optional for anyone not only that’s blind, but is very stressful and doesn’t want to walk. Especially if you’re in a big airport, such as New York’s, JFK, Miami international airport, or other large airports.
I wish more people got better training. I couldn’t imagine how vulnerable it is needing strangers help, and just for them to be pulling you around, or just flat out acting like it’s inconveniencing to them. Just wow. Thank you for always sharing your experience, and providing awareness!
At 7:30 that black woman looked at lady Joy with rudeness. She had to have known her to be completely blind, for if she did not know, she would have risked being called out and there fore confronted. I hope the airport manager executive who is in charge of this department views this video and responds with a swift repremand that involves a serious dressing down. And finally, I hope LaDonna gets good blessings from above for her genuine support towards Joy.

LaDonna is an angel! I feel like you two could be BFFs, lol. Diane and Lucy seemed lovely as well. Videos like these make me realize I take my sight for granted, to be able to do something as simple as look for a place to sit. I'm not brave enough to fly on my own as a sighted person, so I find it very admirable that you are so brave to do it and to speak up about your needs! It's surprising to me how most of the people driving those little carts have so little idea of how to help a blind person, you'd think they would be helping them somewhat regularly.
A wheelchair should always be an optional way of transport, especially from gate to gate if it’s connecting flights, or even carts. But a cart shit always be an option also after check-in. Especially if it’s a large airport like either New York’s JFK, Atlantis Hartsfield Jackson, international airport, Denver international airport, Miami international airport, Fort Lauderdale, international airport, and so on. i’m just glad most airports are following the Americans with disabilities act, federal law. It is the law to escort a person, especially that is completely visually impaired like myself. By all means of either walking, being transported via wheelchair, or cart. To whatever gate it could be, for what ever flight you are traveling to more than ever.
The people who seem to give poor service physically look like they HATE their job, and that they HATE people. You can probably hear it in their voice. When someone has that much distain, it's no wonder their performance is so bad. They're goal is to do the bare minimum, and make it through the day for that paycheck.
Maybe then they either need to improve their performance or else they can walk out the door. Maybe a job that doesn’t involve assisting people would be better for them.
@@robkrasinski6217 In situations like this I try to avoid saying things like "they should get another job". We don't know their life or financial situation. Maybe this was their only option as far as well paying jobs that offer benefits, that they could find. It's very privileged to be able to be picky about what you do for a living.
You need to somehow get this video shown to the people who oversee these airport assistants so they can see where their staff are needing of training. If their job is to assist I would have thought helping those with physical challenges would be a high priority in their training.
This made me want to cry. I wish they would have more trained personnel for challenged travelers. LaDonna seemed to be the only one who knew how to assist.
I can’t believe how frustrated I am for you! So much of helping a blind person is just common sense. It seems as if some of the men started to help you, then suddenly forgot that you were blind! The expressions on their faces were that of total confusion.
Joy, this was an emotional rollercoaster for me to watch. I cannot imagine how it was for you. It would be nice if DFW airport authority would see this and offer training for the staff.
Wow joy idk how u do this all by yourself because I would be scared with the way the world is today. U can't trust anyone. U r brave to travel by yourself, I would not do that I'm glad u made it it ok❤😊
Joy you are so awesome. I am pretty sure I will go blind one day due to illness so watching your video and seeing you handle it well gives me so much hope. Keep going Joy, you are amazing and brave!!
I felt moved to tears when you ended up having a great experience with ledonna. I have disabilities.. I have been passed around in wellchairs before. It doesn't always feel that good. But it is a completely different experience when you're treated with compassion.
I am completely visually impaired myself, I was born with a super rare disease that occurred right after birth, it is called, lenz syndrome. This occurs after mom has gave birth, and the eyes are completely absent. No retina, no eyeballs or anything within the eyes.
Hey Joy! My girlfriend met you outside the elevator at a hotel in Vegas. She told me you were surprised. Anyway, I love you and enjoy your videos very much!
Oh yes, oh my goodness!!! That was such an amazing fun moment for me! Were you there with her? I mean not in the elevator lol, but in Vegas? If so she should’ve had you come out to meet me I would’ve love that. Thanks so much for saying hi, and feel free to say hi anytime. I do keep in touch with a lot of my fans on Facebook messenger or Instagram DM‘s :-)
Something funny as a nearly deaf person, I got practically run over by a similar cart at an airport. I guess he'd been yelling at me for awhile cos he was red in the face when I got a shock from being nudged in the backpack. Maybe they should install a flashing light in front on the cart for deaf people to notice.
There was both a language and a cultural barrier, but even if there wasn't they would have needed training. I don't think it's their fault, I just wonder who is managing this and how; and why isn't there training on how to deal with people with disabilities. Even if they don't speak the language very well, they can be taught useful sentences. Not that hard. A few hours of training and a handbook with instructions would probably suffice, plus refresher courses every once in a while. They could also do a roleplay activity where their eyes are covered and they have to go from point A to point B, so that they realize what is needed as far as giving and receiving instructions.
Joy went for the ask his name twice limit, when she met the guy off the plane. Anymore and it gets embarrassing, especially as he was quite clear his name was oooohhan
Hey Joy! When you vlog do you use a lanyard on your phone, if so where did you get it? Watching part 2 sounded a bit stressful at first and I can only imagine what you went through. But it’s nice to meet people like the young lady who helped you with your food, it honestly makes the experience a little less stressful. You where probably so exhausted by the end of that day and I don’t blame you for it. Can’t wait for my flight in two weeks.
Awesome video, Joy! I’ve heard Molly talk about opting for the wheelchair before, and honestly you should feel justified in doing whatever works, even if it’s just some of the time. It’s wild seeing all of the parts of your travels. Thank you so much for sharing everything. LaDonna was so incredible!! Truly exemplifies upstanding hard work and doing whatever you do for the glory of God. It must have been such a breath of fresh air to have met someone as lovely as you. ☺️
Oh that’s so awesome! Well if you see LaDonna please give her my love! I’m actually going to be calling the centurion lounge to praise her for all her amazing assistance and kindness
The most frustrating thing to me is the lack of communication between these people. It’s as if it’s taboo to tell others someone is blind right in front of the blind person. As if it’s offensive or something. If only they would have been like, “THIS IS JOY, SHE IS BLIND, CAN YOU PLEASE HELP HER TO HER NEXT DESTINATION.” Things could have gone more smoothly for you. 😭
My goodness! I only see shapes and shadows. I can’t imagine trying to catch a flight and or being shuttled around when you see absolutely nothing. Terrifying if someone’s not telling you what’s going on or what they’re doing. This was informative and stressful to watch. I have my hands full trying to express what I need when using my local public transit. The thought of flying absolutely terrifies me, but it’s really inspiring to see your confidence and how you advocate even when things aren’t going the best. LaDonna was so sweet and accommodating. It makes me happy to know that there are some good folks out there who truly do care. :)
I Work in The Hotel! Hyatt Regency DFW and Grand Hyatt! Definitely Airport Staff needs more training! La Donna was Great in her Hospitality and very Professional and very Caring! You should Come by and visit our Hotels!
Hahaaha ASI here, I know why you took the chair in the begging and I would do it as well . Guy wasn't the most polite and you wouldn't understand him. Ok now on to finish this video. Omg now I am listening second guy and he is also quite.... I cant say it with nice words. Haha now comes the other people and they are all like that haahah you deal with it so amazingly I don't think I would be the same. You are so amazing. Some of the people you meet on the way are just great. You the best.I love you
Hi Joy, I just tuned into your videos and watched your first video you did eight years ago. Your an inspiration to me. What a lovely person you are in every way. I subscribed to your channel. I will endeavour to follow your lovely life through your channel. Best thoughts your way. From Melbourne, Australia..
The first guy who pushed you in the wheelchair first there was a language barrier but I do not think he knew you were blind and I know that you have a cane and that's supposed to represent blindness but through that language barrier I don't think they understood that and so maybe something that could be very helpful for you when going through an airport is to say you know hi I'm Joy I am completely blind and so you will be guiding me through the airport using sighted guide you will be my eyes for me please use descriptive words such as we are going down a ramp turn right turn left halting for people I would also like for you to guide me using your left elbow you will walk on my right side one step in front of me I will hold on to your left elbow with my arm my hand and you will walk as normal I will continue to use my cane with my left hand please remember I am completely blind. Please do not call me without letting me know what we're doing and where we're going type of thing I think giving them like a quick little lesson on how to do sighted guide would be very beneficial I don't think you're very many people are trained in this and I think it's best if you were to just assume that whoever is going to be guiding you has never guided somebody completely blind and just teach them really quick I think that you would then have a better outcome at the airport.
Joy I must say there is a lot of carts in this airport that you are at currently at this part of the video lol love your videos your amazing being complitely blind can be challenging sometimes I get it totally lol
@@JoyRoss what have you done in the past with your guide dogs when they offered you the trams. I recently got my first Guide Dog and so is thinking about different ways of traveling for the airports.
Actually there is no way you can take one of those carts with a service dog, a dog as big as a lab will not fit so they would’ve had to guide me by walking or with me in a wheelchair with my dog healing on leash next to me
There seems to be a language barrier. I have it happen a lot. I live in Canada ontario and it is very diverse. I think you should let the people who are very quick with you understand that you are very stressed and confused. But honestly, everyone gets stressed at the airport.
And the more diverse an area is, the more liberal it is. In the US the more populated urban areas and cities tend to be liberal and blue (democrat) and the rural farm areas conservative and red (republican). Cities and more populated areas tend to be more diverse.
A lot of people are straight rude but I do think the comments need to have a bit more patience with some of these people. Many meant well and did the best they could with having zero training for situations like this. It's just as overwhelming for them as it is for Joy. Try to have more grace for some of these people. Not the rude ones but the ones just struggling to talk or figure things out or not thinking about telling Joy to take a step. It's a lot happening all at once for them as much as it is for Joy. Just saying.
No, it isn’t as hard for them as it was for Joy. I agree we need to give people grace and they clearly had 0 idea what they were doing, but this comment is ridiculous. Being confused because you’re not properly trained isn’t the same as being treated like shit due to your disability and it’s wild you’d think the two are comparable.
@@leggyegg2890 You clearly didn't read or understand my comment. The rude people are simply that. Rude and many of them shouldn't even have a job with people. It's gross how they were. But many others were simply overwhelmed and they weren't rude. Just didn't know what to do and clearly undertrained. You all need to learn to see things from all perspectives.
Seems to me like there should be 1 person that picks you up and helps you get to your gate, particularly for those who are blind. It seems not only stressful, but unsafe!
For me this is also very frustrating because I am visually impaired myself, I am pretty frustrated about the lack of support they were able to provide for you at that airport, Ladonna was amazing but almost everyone else there was not providing much support at all, I understand that there might be a language barrier for them But they can still be way better than what they were, I also know that there is a lot of training involved and I know That most likely they weren't able to receive that training but before they start working there they need to get that type of training and any other training to to provide better support in those situations, I saw your comment that the airport apologized which is also amazing but I feel like every Airport and every location in the world needs more training on guiding people whether that's with blindness or any other disability they should have that training before they start Working at that location Because people can take their assistance worse than you did , even though their assistance was poor you took it very well, and if other people receive that same type of assistance they could have reacted differently and it could have been worse so I believe that before someone starts working somewhere they should get at least trained a little bit on everything Just know that you didn't amazing, you did nothing wrong, stay strong you've got this and and hopefully next time The people assisting you in any location and any situation is much better than it was Because that is not OK especially with some of them kind of yelling at you and not tapping your shoulder or giving some type of indication that they are talking to you Even after explaining to them that you are completely blind as I said I am visually impaired myself and if I was in any of these situations it would be a little bit annoying, I would be as nice as you because I'm not the type to give attitude or yell at anyone back, I'd probably even be too shy to give someone advice back depending on the situation and I just want you to know that you dealt with this amazing and and I don't think I could ever do it any better than what you did So thank you for what you do and thank you for showing the world the behind the scenes of what blind and visually impaired people would have to go through just for you To go on a vacation or to go back home Or even to do anything like go to a store where's your from and see what the training is like there and how they treat you in different locations it's crazy how Bad the accessibility and Training is on guiding and supporting disabled people in some States Also I'm not trying to criticize anyone for not knowing how to guide the blind or visually impaired or anyone with any sort of disability I am just saying for the people in this video besides Lucy and Adana That their assistance wasn't OK, Ladonna did absolutely phenomenal and there should be way more people in the world like her, I feel bad for Lucy because no one told her that you are completely blind which also isn't OK if they are switching you with someone else they should have told Lucy all of your accommodations that you need and let her know that you are blind so that she is aware of that as well And soon goes to anyone else that someone switches you with the person that you were originally with should have told the person that switched with them And same goes to anyone else that someone switches you with the person that you were originally with should have told the person that switched with them, But hopefully there can be more training done to the public to help gain the assistance Needed to better support the people who required extra needs. Anyway i hope all is well, wish you the best and have a wonderful rest of your night!
How do people that work there even communicate if they can barely speak english? They treat Joy like a dog, “sit. sit. sit here. no. bag. ok. go there. wait. ok come.” 😤🤯
I hated the way they spoke to me, commanding me to do things instead of asking me politely. I literally felt like I was a piece of trash, no respect whatsoever with those individuals. However, the first flight attendant Tasha, and of course LaDonna at the AMEX lounge was incredible! Nothing but respect and love
So only women were polite to you? It was the men who were rude to you? It seems that in most cases men are not as nice as women are in the public service sector.
I wonder if some of the staff is reluctant to speak because English isn't their first language. I personally feel that airport staff in the US should be fluent and comfortable speaking English along with being trained on how to help disabled people.
So on the wheelchair point I don't like to do it and I was once almost forced to sit in a wheelchair by a very rude member of staff at London Luton Airport here in England
What’s crazy is these people can see you’re recording them but this is the best they can act with their knowledge… they need more training that’s for sure!’
@@JoyRoss yeah!! That’s what blows my mind the most. This is then trying their best. Gosh. As if other countries don’t have blind or differently ambled people lol! Hope you have a wonderful day Joy! LaDonna is an Angel and exactly the type of worker I was while in customer service. We’re out here! 💕🥰✨
Have you noticed a difference in service flying diffeent airlines? Just curious. I realize most of the issues you face tho are with third-party contracted airport employees and not actual airline staff but I am curious if you find better service on different airlines.
My compliments to you for the hard work and good efforts you do and showing these videos and keeping and experimenting and educating others I find if you’re in a really big airport a wheelchair is handy to use it makes a transition that much smoother and quicker☺️
Something I've noticed watching these videos is a lot of the people that come off as "rude" have limited English language skills so what seems like "commands" is really just them not being fluent in English. When I try to speak French or Spanish I may come across as rude because I don't know all the right words or sentence structure. If the workers don't have the proper language skills then the airport should offer English language classes for them. The people who tend to be more helpful have English as a first language so they can be more descriptive. Just my opinion after watching these airport guiding videos. If they aren't trained it's the fault of whoever is hiring them.
I think you are amazing, Joy! You are so independant already, but in my opinion, your sanity is a lot more important than proving to people in the airport that you are self-sufficient. They all look like they hate being in the airport anyway. Plus you get to your destination gate while sitting like a queen so it's a glamorous ride that's full of breeze and food aromas, haha.
Communication is key in every aspect of life but it's even more key in Many situations people who are visually impaired has a disability of some sort or people with a mental illness or is suicidal too ect ect you must try to speak clearly and slowly with the person and at the person's level and if needs be give the person time to process what you are saying. To understand what was said. Obviously everyone. is different and it differs from person to person. or try to use other forms of communicating with people .
Hi Joy I am a new subscriber have recently found yourself and Molly’s Chanel’s I absolutely love watching all your vlogs. It’s rather upsetting to see how people are unable to let you know what’s going on, so very rude of them. It would be so reassuring for yourself and others if someone could stay with you from when you enter an air port until you board the plane. Lovely lady in the lounge bought a tear to my eye god bless her. Sending love & best wishes to you Joy you courageous lovely lady big hugs 🤗 from sw 🇬🇧
I honestly don’t think that the wheelchairs make you more disabled. I think of them as an aid to help you navigate the world faster. As I said in my previous comment, I usually take the wheelchairs during airport visits because it helps me and my family get from point a to point B faster. Otherwise, it would take me forever to walk to the gate since I have disabilities that limit my mobility.
You hovered your hand and almost touched the flush right at this moment: 33:37 Perhaps try running your fingers horizontally left to right all the way through without lifting them. Maybe that could help you scan the area more effectively and find the button more easily.

@@robkrasinski6217 In situations like this I try to avoid saying things like "they should get another job". We don't know their life or financial situation. Maybe this was their only option as far as well paying jobs that offer benefits, that they could find. It's very privileged to be able to be picky about what you do for a living.
LaDonna was so awesome and so was the flight attendant in the beginning!
Oh my gosh yes, LaDonna and Tosha were incredible!
LaDonna is a beautiful soul inside and out ❤️
Ah! I miss traveling! Thanks for sharing your experience, Joy! Sending lotsa love from Texas!!!!
Completly agree, Especially when they were pointing and gesturing like joy cant flipping see what is that going to do 🙄
The pilots were complete jackasses and a host of clueless assistants
Pilots were lazy
omg La Donna is SO nice and it makes me so happy 😭♥
Amazing girl !!!! Thank you for great video
Joy, this was an emotional rollercoaster for me to watch. I cannot imagine how it was for you. It would be nice if DFW airport authority would see this and offer training for the staff.
Pilots were idiots as well
Great video joy! i flew from oakland and i had a great time. I also had an easy time walking through the airport.
When even LaDonna had better people skills than the pilot 🙄🙄🙄
Something funny as a nearly deaf person, I got practically run over by a similar cart at an airport. I guess he'd been yelling at me for awhile cos he was red in the face when I got a shock from being nudged in the backpack. Maybe they should install a flashing light in front on the cart for deaf people to notice.
Hi joy I in joy watching your videos you are such an inspiration and I would like to hear more songs on your music channel you sing beautifully
LaDonna is amazing 💪🏽
She dressed WAY BETTERr than other women in the airport💥💯
LaDonna ROCKS
Az a blind person myself I would like to travel alone as I get older. Thank you for showing how you travel as a blind woman 😊😊
DFW centurion is my home lounge , i go there at least 2 times a month , everyone there is amazing. 💯
Oh that’s so awesome! Well if you see LaDonna please give her my love! I’m actually going to be calling the centurion lounge to praise her for all her amazing assistance and kindness
@@JoyRoss you bet! ❤️
Omg your in Dallas I hope to meet you sometime ! you are so patient with people who have no clue how to help you.
Thank you, you’re from Dallas?
@@JoyRoss yep!
My daughter has a blind dog and we use more verbal direction for her than they do with Joy. I love LaDonna.
You the best.I love you
Hi Joy,
I just tuned into your videos and watched your first video you did eight years ago.
Your an inspiration to me. What a lovely person you are in every way. I subscribed to your channel. I will endeavour to follow your lovely life through your channel. Best thoughts your way.
From Melbourne, Australia..
Aw I love Ladanna that was so nice!!
You are a beautiful person joy hope everything is going well love you joy always interesting to see the different things you get up to
The first guy who pushed you in the wheelchair first there was a language barrier but I do not think he knew you were blind and I know that you have a cane and that's supposed to represent blindness but through that language barrier I don't think they understood that and so maybe something that could be very helpful for you when going through an airport is to say you know hi I'm Joy I am completely blind and so you will be guiding me through the airport using sighted guide you will be my eyes for me please use descriptive words such as we are going down a ramp turn right turn left halting for people I would also like for you to guide me using your left elbow you will walk on my right side one step in front of me I will hold on to your left elbow with my arm my hand and you will walk as normal I will continue to use my cane with my left hand please remember I am completely blind.
Love you joy ross blind!!!
Awesome video as always Joy. You got great assistance here. Love you❤👍
Joy I must say there is a lot of carts in this airport that you are at currently at this part of the video lol love your videos your amazing being complitely blind can be challenging sometimes I get it totally lol
Yolonda was so sweet we need more airport staff like her love it 🥰
Sorry you had such a stressful experience with people not knowing how to help in the beginning, but LaDonna definitely seemed awesome.
Thank you, and yes LaDonna was amazing!
@@JoyRoss was this your first time at this airport
No, I used to live there :-) that’s the city I lived in when I went completely blind 14 1/2 years ago
I can’t even with this video 😡 . So sorry for your horrible travel this time. The one lady was obviously GREAT !!
LaDonna was outstanding
I hope everything is going good at the airport on your trip wish you the best on your trip
Maybe, before going into the bathrooms, you could ask the flight attendant to show you where the flusher, paper towels and sink are.
Seems to me like there should be 1 person that picks you up and helps you get to your gate, particularly for those who are blind. It seems not only stressful, but unsafe!
They're treating you like a joke and a play thing
No words 😡😡😡 thank goodness for LaDonna ❤️❤️
I wonder if some of the staff is reluctant to speak because English isn't their first language. I personally feel that airport staff in the US should be fluent and comfortable speaking English along with being trained on how to help disabled people.
So on the wheelchair point I don't like to do it and I was once almost forced to sit in a wheelchair by a very rude member of staff at London Luton Airport here in England
What’s crazy is these people can see you’re recording them but this is the best they can act with their knowledge… they need more training that’s for sure!’
I know right? You would think when I’m holding up an iPhone filming they would put their best face on
@@JoyRoss yeah!!
Pilots were complete jackasses.. and a host of clueless assistants
My compliments to you for the hard work and good efforts you do and showing these videos and keeping and experimenting and educating others I find if you’re in a really big airport a wheelchair is handy to use it makes a transition that much smoother and quicker☺️
You’re doing good. I rode in a wheelchair and a cart when I was flying. It makes it easier. By the way my twin has a dog named Lucy.
I agree
My god some of them were just obnoxious and rude and I don't think I ever want to go to an airport
Pilots were idiots and the assistants were clueless
I always take a wheelchair in airports. I'm visually impaired and it works well for mev
Airports need to train their staff in how to treat people with disabilities
You hovered your hand and almost touched the flush right at this moment: 33:37
Perhaps try running your fingers horizontally left to right all the way through without lifting them. Maybe that could help you scan the area more effectively and find the button more easily.
