    Wonderful video - what a great idea to document your city's transit system. I grew up in Boston and loved riding the subways there - I wish they would do a similar series of videos. Anyway wonderful stuff and I hope you do more - perhaps a video in a snowstorm or in a thunderstorm? That would be awesome! Regards, Stormdog

    I like Dana Mack's idea, below. Red Line full route in real time in a rain or snow storm. I probably would interrupt my work to watch that. Vicarious stuff again. Make train seem cozy.

    This line formerly know as the Lake Street line used to be at street level from Harlem to Laramie. In 1961 construction began on a joint project to elevate the Lake Street "El" tracks. Rather than build a new elevated structure for the "El", the tracks were relocated onto the Chicago&Northwestern's railroad embankment, occupying the southern portion of the elevated right-of-way, which the railroad vacated. The elevation project included the construction of new stations and removal of the old wooden stations at street-level. The stations included new island platforms on the embankment and street-level station houses on the south side of the embankment. The stations were very modern for the times.Lake "El" trains began using the new elevated right-of-way on the C&NW embankment between Laramie and Harlem on Sunday, October 28, 1962. The ground-level stations closed and the elevated platforms opened, but the new permanent street-level station houses were not ready yet, due to the street-level tracks needing to be removed before they could be completed. Thus, on opening day, temporary fare control areas were used at Ridgeland. Completion of the remaining amenities was not far off, however. The station's permanent station house went into service on Friday, December 28, 1962.

      Remnants of some of the old C&NW platforms are still visible on the south side of the embankment.

    I've watched quite a few of these excellent videos.. I still can't believe people live, eat dinner and sleep within feet of a train going 55 - 70 mph.

      A friend of mine lives his entire life in a condo by L tracks. Once, I invited him for a sleepover in my rural home, about 2 hours from Chicago. The quiet and spaciousness freaked him out...he was tense about "animals" and muffled sounds. Also, for the first time in his life, he saw the night sky, full of bright stars. As he put it, "The chaos of the universe" made his head ache.

    Good ride to have vicariously. Flat suburbia to vertical downtown Chicago. Enjoy having it on my second 'puter screen while I'm working on my primary screen. At State/Lake I take a break, transfer to the Red Line to Howard and get a coffee. Nice.

    have noticed that at pretty much all of the stations, on the platforms, there are those YELLOW squares, know that if correct, that is where all of the trains are supposed to have their doors stop right in front of right, if so how can the operaTOR of the train know right when to stop the train just do the doors of the train are right at those yellow squares, Or is this done by computer somehow?????

      This video ends at the Garfield/55th station. After that, the Green line "branches" into 2 lines, for either 63rd/Ashland (the old "Englewood" branch) or 63rd/Cottage Grove (the old "Jackson Park) branch. I don't know why the CTA continues to operate these branches, since south-side ridership has declined here drastically, since the opening of the faster Dan Ryan branch (Red Line) in the late '60s. And as you can see on this video, ridership south of 35th St is sparse, and the surrounding areas look somewhat "depressed".

    • @chicagoareacta
      @chicagoareacta 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Brinkers they should just run Harlem/Lake-Ashland/63 Idk why they have 2 branches and yes it is depressing just looking at the emptiness every where over there I’ve been to cottage and Ashland

    • @michaelbrinkers1145
      @michaelbrinkers1145 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chicagoareacta To modify my description of the area as being "depressed", the Jackson Park branch is still within walking distance of The University of Chicago campus and the Museum of Science & Industry. Also, as of June 2019, courts have given the green light for the beginning construction of the Barack Obama presidential library near there (South Shore). Actual residents of the area are better qualified to comment on the "safety" of this area. However, based on recent crime statistics, the Englewood area continues to be a "sore" point. The new mayor promises hope.
