I live near a leopard enclosure in India. While my city is highly developed, sometimes (avg. Once an year) a leopard escapes the enclosure and enters the city. Till it is caught, everyone feels excited. In the last 10 years, these escaped leopards have hunted some dogs, but have never harmed a human.
Oh, How beautiful. I have always loved cats from a young age. The live footage of these glorious leopards, those eyes and their absolutely stunning coat and bodies it’s like something from another world. But it’s our world, a world that has less and less room for these beautiful spirits. If we didn’t have big cats to look up on, who would we be? Yes, we and our world would be so much less.
Wonderful, succinct and informative I recently got back from Kruger. Some of the male leopards were quite bulky but are constantly harassed by the spotted hyenas
You missed some important information related to Indian leopards- 1. Snow leopards are also found in India in the mountain ranges of Himalayas.. 2. Even black leopards are also found in India which we call panthers.. 3. Leopards not only get tough competition from tigers but also from Lions in India....
Yes, but snow leopards are not categorized with the 8 leopard subspecies. Black leopards are not only restricted to India, they are a melanistic color variant of normal leopards (mostly found in SE Asia). Also lions are found only in Gir, so Indian leopards don’t have to compete with lions everywhere in India.
By that logic, there are also Clouded leopards in India. Just because they are named 'leopard' does not make them leopards. The snow leopard's closest relative is the tiger.
@@AegleCreations wrong information there is literally a video documentary of black panther of India! See that for yourself it is uploaded by none other than discovery channel!
A really interesting video, the Leopard is a true survivor in our world, able to live undetected in the most populated areas , even in large towns in Africa, no one can really give a true population count on this species, but they are certainly not "endangered" as most TV "documentaries" would have us believe, the only limit to their existence would seem to be a suitable prey population, but as this adaptable cat can eat almost any prey, from Beetles to large antelope it is human disturbance that ca cause it to move on. Many thanks for producing this sensible and factual documentary! Chris B.

Amazing documentary, would just like to point out few things The average weights taken for Sri Lankan leopards were taken in 1930 from just 7 males which would not be enough. Also there is the fact that predator size correlates with prey size and it has been seen that all over the world leopard sizes increase as more protection is given to there prey who were prior hunted by humans thus forcing prey to become smaller and now returning to original larger sizes. Also as the largest leopards were hunted in the past there genes may be diluted but with more protection we are seeing the arrival of larger leopards who are returning to there true natural sizes. Proof for this is how the average weight in 1910 in Africa for a leopard was given at 50kg but now it's over 70kg, a significant increase in size. Sadly in Sri Lanka we only have that one study done a century ago which is too outdated. The only other 2 leopards recently measured were the black panther at 72kg and a leopard in Gal Oya at 80kg, it seems the average sizes have increased. Horton plains, they seem to exceed the ones in Yala in size as they have to hunt 280kg Horton plains Sambhar rather than 75kg deer in Yala and cold mountains need more tough, muscular bodies than lowland flat environments. Also leopard prey biomass which is already very high in yala at 7,000kg is dwarfed by Horton plains which has a denisty of 178 samaber for a km2 on the plains which alone amounts to 30,000kg+ not including other prey animals. This prey denisty is akin to what lions feed on in Masai Mara. Such high prey denisty seems to lead to bigger animals due to better feeding as in the case of Okavanga Delta lions and Kazaringa tigers, both apex predators of there domain growing considerably larger in these subpopulation than seen in other areas. We may truly have the larger leopards who can beat the Giant Perisan leopard and African ones, specifically the huge African Congolese leopards. Could you please do a documentary on highland leopards of Horton Plains
Great points, but I must say there was an unofficial measurement taken of a 93kg male leopard by the DWC in the 1990's, it was trapped near Horton Plains on the kirigalpoththa trail
@@tariqmohamed oh wow that's a very large leopard. Normally the problem with unofficial weight records is if there done by hunters they tend to highly exaggerate the animals size to boast there skill and daring in hunting such a monster animal. That is why the historical weights of 300kg + tigers in Siberia are hard to authenticated because most if not all were taken by hunters. But if done by DWC a scientific backed department then there is less reason to believe in exaggeration. You missed some important information related to Indian leopards-

Bakyov reported specimens from Manchuria weighing 390-400 kg (860-880 lb). There is reason to believe that such large individuals are now a thing of the past owing to over-hunting of the most sizeable tigers or a reduction of prey over time. I wonder if the leopards once found in Southern Europe (as recently as Roman times) were of the Turkish subspecies or their own extinct subspecies. It's also strange that there aren't leopards on Sumatra, since Javan Leopards presumedly reached Java through Sumatra.
PS) I suspect African Leopards prefer medium sized prey like Impala and Warthogs because they're small enough to haul up into a tree, while larger prey items are very often lost to Lions and Spotted Hyenas (which may also attack the Leopard).
Perhaps sumatra is not their main route to come in java, well some theory says that there was once a big island called "sunda land" before the sea start raising and all those islands start splitting

Indian Leopard population would officially show 15,000-16,000.
But in real it's Atleast Double in numbers ~35,000.
15,000 number comes from India's "Tiger Census" which is limited to just 53 tiger reserves/ total 553+ reserves (Total area of Tiger reserve is just 70,000 sq km or 2.21% of India). So during Tiger Census if they spot Leopard, they count it.

Amazing documentary, would just like to point out few things
The average weights taken for Sri Lankan leopards were taken in 1930 from just 7 males which would not be enough.
Thx for the info!
Thank you for sharing such important information . 🌹🌹
Great points, but I must say there was an unofficial measurement taken of a 93kg male leopard by the DWC in the 1990's, it was trapped near Horton Plains on the kirigalpoththa trail
Sz
@@tariqmohamed oh wow that's a very large leopard. Normally the problem with unofficial weight records is if there done by hunters they tend to highly exaggerate the animals size to boast there skill and daring in hunting such a monster animal. That is why the historical weights of 300kg + tigers in Siberia are hard to authenticated because most if not all were taken by hunters. But if done by DWC a scientific backed department then there is less reason to believe in exaggeration. If you have any links or documents on this specific leopard could you please share it, I would love to learn more about this individual incident 😁
