It was on purpose and not a miss as he mentioned seeing it, 2star HK with a LK and a DK has more potential to last longer as the game progresses than a Civet + 2 pairs and no Mech legendaries in the pool. Sure it would've been stronger in the early game but I think that was bait imho. Unsure what Vara's thought process was though.
Econ was too tight at that point in the game. I already knew I wanted to transition to Knights very soon anyway too. Had a very strong knight start, good items, and there was no lategame possibility for goblins because no mech legendaries in the pool.
