  • Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
    Impromptus for piano, D. 935 (Op. posth. 142), No. 1 in F minor (1827)
    Nikolai Lugansky, 2016
    From Moscow Philharmonic Society
“... Schubert may, in fact, have had something much larger in mind when he composed D. 935: Robert Schumann suggested that the key sequence of the four pieces…formed a sonata in all but name. There is a markedly greater degree of overall unity among these Impromptus than we find in the more disparate first series, D. 899, and Schumann's observation is further strengthened by the unmistakable motivic associations between Nos. 1 and 4 -- a quality often associated with the opening and closing movements of a sonata. However, it is easy for this line of thought to become strained, and, whatever Schubert's intentions may have been, the urgent, driving rhythms and decorative melodic style found in these four pieces aligns them with the first popular examples of the Impromptu genre, written in Hungary during the 1820s.” - Rovi Staff

No. 2 in A♭ major. Allegretto

LOVE the way he plays the sections beginning at 2:55 and 8:45! In fact, the whole interpretation is pretty darn wonderful! Thanks for posting. (Incidentally, in an interview published recently in International Piano magazine, Lugansky said that his favourite among his own recordings were those of Schubert - perhaps not a composer one would immediately associate with him ...)

A monster pianist like Lugansky deserves better sound quality in the recordings and less COUGHING. Rargh.

Pulls even with Zimmerman in this piece - and that’s saying a lot.

Oh come on, it's a live performance and it's normal that some people will cough over the course of a concert. Is it such a main issue that distracts you so much from the performance?

Don't assume that nobody farted. Those silent ones are the worst stinkers.

@@galanis38 yes, it kills the intimate mood of Schubert s music! and also its disrespectful to the performer.
