I imagine that when John was a kid, jane’s disappearance had hit William pretty hard, and for a time he was having trouble adjusting to life without her, having to both manage a house and raise John by himself. So after a while I think that John eventually noticed how much his father was struggling and took it upon himself to learn how to cook, and also how to do all kinds of housework to help lighten the load a bit for his dad.
