According to Wikipedia, the image you show at 9:00 is actually Barnard 68, a dark nebula with physical mass that blocks light. The Bootes void is in a different region of space, although they are frequently confused in media.
I hadn't heard of either of them before this video, so I'm still thankful. Even slightly inaccurate data presents us with new opportunities to learn and explore!

If it's a type of supernova that completely destroys the star, then obviously its companions get flung off into space. Otherwise, it depends on how much mass the exploding star looses. The companions could be ejected, or they could simply shift to more elongated orbits.

    • @avr8844

The shock wave can cause so many different situations. It depends on multiple variables; the mass of all the objects, the distances involved, the speed and shape of the orbits, and the positioning at the time of the supernova.
Scientists use massively powerful supercomputers to model and simulate these situations and discover possible outcomes.
A lot of this research is available to the public online.
Also, universe sandbox 2 is an incredibly accessible "game" that's really cheap and provides endless entertainment. (Anton petrov uses it in his videos to show what he's talking about).

Regarding the tornado video Well o do have one story that's right up this alley. .it were 20 year ago and my wife was out o town and me and a buddy was drinking some whiskey and shooting our guns into the darkened fields behind my house and we heard a rustling in the distance, we said we'd best get inside but when we both reached for the door handle our our hands touched and we felt this electricity as we clutched each other in the warm embrace only a man and another man can have I felt a pressure in my backside and the sudden urge to slide down on this unknown force it was sheer pleasure but then my wife was there just staring at us.
      Then it happened
She jumped towards us with a knife and it was as a very big knife and she was screaming and hollering at us we could barely get put of the embrace we were in as she sliced off my tight nipple and buddy got a nick on his left butt cheek but that was the day tornado Sally came to my house.

2:01 While studying computer science at the Technical University of Munich we once had an excursion to the O2 headquarters, which is one of the major mobile providers in and around Germany. There we got told that the rule for turning off smartphones during airplane liftoff and landing is not so much about protecting the airplane, but rather about not messing up the mobile network. At this stage of flight the airplane is flying low enough for your smartphone to connect to the mobile radio towers and its already flying fast enough to cause a lot of pointless handovers between towers in quick succession.

Nurse here, wanted to say something regarding that BioButton. I like the idea of relateively cheap and accessible stuff becoming more available to everyone and making it easier to monitor your health, no bad things to say here. But the scenario you described is nightmare fuel for me, I hope it never comes to that. There's so many times where you wouldn't be able to react fast enough at all if something happens when people are monitored from far away... moreover, the amount of responsibilty that would burden this single nurse with is batshit crazy. With a hundred patients to a single nurse, every second shift you'd have some degree of emergencies coinciding if it's post-OP patients. The metrics that thing can record also aren't remotely as accurate as proper EKG monitoring or arterial blood pressure lines in ICU settings (if it can even monitor BP, which it doesn't look like). I like it for the casual user or to make it easier for some target groups to monitor their own vitals to help their GP in diagnostics, but if that thing you mentioned is the selling point I'm afraid at the idea of other inventions that man wants to create hitting the mainstream.

I think there’s something very messed up about our culture, where you can’t just enjoy content like everyone else, without having to pay money to be, “special,” enough to get extra stuff. I love this channel too, but they all do it, even the best of them. They can make life changing sums of money.
BTW, if you’re interested, I know about the aircraft, “phones off,” thing. Brian Benamran explains in his book, How To Speak Science, why people have to turn off their phones for landing (and a host of other things, like switching off the planes lights) for commercial airliners. It’s not what you think.
It’s actually to do with the escape shoots. They discovered that people don’t like leaping into an inky black void, and won’t jump onto the escape slides at night, if the aircraft crash lands. This puts other passengers at risk in a situation where seconds literally count on a life and death level, slowing the whole evacuation process.
So nearly all of the measures they take for landing procedure are to do with optimising passenger night vision, so they can see the slide they’re leaping onto, rather than trusting that they’re not leaping 70 feet to their death. True story. Merry Christmas.

Other things to think about covering: the Legrange points that exist between the Sun and other celestial bodies and their potential scientific purposes would be fun to learn about as well. On the cosmological principal: it refers to the homogeneity of the universe at LARGE scales. Bigger than that. We don't say it's dead because there are planets, because planets only seen important up close. It's the same issue with these megastructures; they sure do seem weird, but we'd expect to see the presence of large structures at large scales. The cosmological principle doesn't "a priori" presuppose the nonexistance of very large structures.

Hi Joe. Great channel. On the cell phones on airplanes topic, it's actually a precaution that's not really needed anymore. Back when cell phones operated in the 900Mhz range, there was a possibility for a cell phone call could cause interference on unshielded aircraft electronics. Modern cell phones are all in the Ghz range, and won't interfere with even unshielded electronics. Thus, it's a long list of policies, that were perhaps once useful, but isn't really anymore. Also, unlike 900Mhz phones, Ghz phones are more range sensitive and won't work at altitude anyway. Though satellite reception is probably pretty good. :-)

    • @JDGuitar82

    • @frankbieser
      @frankbieser 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@frederf3227 Yes, a second signal interferes with the signaling in the device creating a "beating" effect in the signaling of the device. However, this has never been a problem. In 1998, when Swissair 111 crashed, because one phone on board was making an outbound call, and another receiving an inbound call at the same time as the avionics went nuts, cell phones were suspected. They also suspected some portable entertainment devices on board. So, they banned their use for a time. Eventually it was found that faulty wiring above the cockpit caused the avionics failure. But polices were set, and agencies hate looking "panicky." ;-)

    • @MrMhmToasty
      @MrMhmToasty 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

They already exist in the form that he showed. The Zio Patch is often given to patients whose heart problems would take too long to uncover in the hospital. The dangle of wires in the hospital is much more advanced than either of these though. Both the Zio Patch and the BioButton have only 2 electrodes, meaning they look at the electrical signals in your heart at two points on the skin. In the hospital you have 12 different electrodes that are all looking at your heart from different angles. It allows doctors to identify where in your heart a problem might be and how severe it is. These more portable options are great for monitoring to see if rare events occur, but very bad at actually giving a good understanding of what exactly the problem is. They definitely have a HUGE place in medicine, but are not going to replace the EKG leads you get put on you in the hospital

The whole idea of science is that it is based on theories that support AVAILABLE patterns of data (not fact). When we come across new patterns/evidence that contradict theories then either the observations are wrong OR the theory being challenged is wrong. When this happens the theory is updated or replaced with a new theory.
This is not disruptive it’s COMPLETELY normal and how the scientific method WORKS.

It's actually really fun watching animals try and figure out how to communicate to us that they want something, aka they try different behaviors until they get the response they want then they start "training" us by using that behavior to get the desired outcome. Cats do it even more than dogs in my experience, they seem more cunningly subtle about it a lot of times.

Talking about dogs - back in the 90's I lived on the third floor of an old converted college building, and I had biker guy called John living in my spare room. I rescued a 6 month old Staffy that we called Billie. She had a bad limp, so we took her to the vets, turned out someone had hit her so hard her hip socket and leg had been broken. Long story short, the vet did his magic, she ended up with pins and braces on the leg for a month or two, but the op was a great success.
When it was time for the metalwork to come off, the vet said "For a few weeks, don't let her use the stairs". So for a month I carried her up and down the stairs, and after that she was fine.
After about 6 months John said to me "How much longer do you think we need to carry Bill up and down the stairs for?"
I said "I stopped about 5 months ago........are you still doing it?"
"Well yeah" he said "We get to the top of the stairs, she sits down, so I carry her down.......coming back, we get to the bottom of the stairs, she sits down so I carry her back up". :D

just wanted to say- the origins of the 12 days of christmas are fascinating. a lot of people believe that it was a way for catholics to teach their children about catholicism during the protestant reformation, but that theory was just suggested in the 90's and has been all but totally disproved. it's likely that the song is much older and was originally a memory game for children full of metaphors and objects they saw every day. there were also a lot of different versions- the line about the partridge in a pear tree was actually added in a later version which led to a similar rendition of the song we know today being popularized. the history is really interesting, jon solo made a good video about it!

Hey Joe, gotta comment on a few things about the cellphones in planes bit, and to say you're right. To qualify myself, airline pilot for 25 years, and a lobbyist for the industry for 20. The truth about cellphones on in the cabin has nothing to do with navigation and communication. It is purely about the fact that in the olden days before digital spectrums, cell phone companies couldn't bend the service volume to prevent a cellphone at altitude from receiving signal. Plus, the providers couldn't accurately measure usage because multiple towers would have one transceiver overlapping. How do you bill a customer that uses 7 ground stations for one transceiver? Cell companies lobbied lawmakers to make it a safety thing and got the FAA involved.
The FAA knows full well that there is not problems with cellphones and navigation and communication (save for the 5G mm wave band now). If there was a problem, aircraft certification would be compromised, and my airline's procedures would reflect that.
Then, recently, mid 2010's, the FAA wanted to rescind the cellphone ban. But the Flight Attendant Unions said, "aw hell no!" and got the Pilots' Unions involved. We lobbied for the AFA, CWA, etc., to keep the cellphone ban in place for safety reasons.
So, follow the money, Joe. Cellphone companies couldn't accurately bill their customers, therefore they needed to make their income source a safety concern.

Tires will change for autonomous cars. Human reaction time is built-in to the sidewall twist, so they will become much stiffer for machine reflexes. Active suspension will smooth out the ride, and will be safer because the car will respond more quickly to obstacles, etc

    Re: limping dog
    Toddlers do the same thing.
Also, if a toddler falls over, he will almost always bounce up and continue to happily run around.
But, if someone makes the mistake of saying something like "Awww, poor baby," the toddler will immediately start to cry.
