AC/DC is my teen years during the 80's, every Australian knew them and their songs. In the 70's - 80's you had the Australia pub scene where all bands cut their teeth to make a living, you had to be good and AC/DC were one of those bands, people went pub to pub following them.

@@Quotenwagnerianer See the Tom Scott video about TH-cam copyright and Content ID stuff. The sad fact is that copyright law is so out of this world that even the clips that we could hear here might be illegal without special arrangements that TH-cam has made.
The Content ID allows copyright owners to be really draconian about their IP ownership and some copyright holders just want to make things really hard.

Your initial reaction is excellent! This song is a ride that doesn't really need to be analyzed for it's musical stylings...it's a journey you just take in and enjoy the ride. Glad you enjoyed it! While AC/DC has an amazing and talented set of musicians, it's not the technicality that makes it work, but the small nuances, changes, and interesting placement of notes and sounds that makes it lovely.

Another big (huge) band that is now a part of your journey. I am thrilled that you enjoyed this so much. I actually thought you might like them, since how I have noticed that you like a lot of hard rock songs. So when people are trying to determine what the difference is between hard rock and metal, I think we need to ask ourselves, "Does Amy like it?" If she does it is probably hard rock.😉 AC/DC are often identified as the closest representation of pure rock/hard rock, which I agree with. They have a strong Chuck Berry influence, so the term the term "rock n roll" also applies. Particularly with their lead guitarist Angus Young, who is heavily influenced by Chuck. You should also hear some of their earlier Bon Scott era songs, now that you have heard Brian Johnson as the lead singer. Either way, they still always have that same iconic AC/DC sound. Great reaction and observations.

@@LeeKennison You might be right actually. I haven't thought about that, but now when you mentioned it, yes, I think that, out of all metal bands and songs Amy has listened to, Rammstein is the one she liked the most. And I have to admit that it makes me feel really good and proud. 🥰 But also I am aware that there is a lot of songs that she probably wouldn't like, simply because of the topic of them and how they have been performed live or especially in official videos. I don't know... Still, there is more than a half of their songs that I think she would appreciate.
But Rammstein aside, I am curious to see if she will find another metal band that she'll like. Maybe after being more exposed to heavier sound. Just curious. I actually don't care about metal or genres at all anymore, it's just something that lingers in my mind sometimes.

Thanks Amie and Vlad for persevering with this one through the maze of You Tube copyright nanny's - glad (and slightly surprised) that you liked it as much as you did. AC/DC are raw, sweat soaked, blue collar, blues based, high voltage rock, and nearly a genre unto themselves. Most of their compositions are relatively simple, and best experienced live (although the albums are very good too), but having said that, AC/DC do simple better than just about anyone else, and that makes them broadly appealing, hence their success. They are a band that don't take themselves too seriously, and make music that is fun to play, and listen to, because, it's supposed to be entertainment after all. Even though the members are now in their '70's, they are still touring, and providing one of rocks best "fun nights out". Cheers!

The “lightning” part is a classic electric guitar effect consisting on rubbing the pick against the length of the string (is there a specific name for it..?), widely used in heavy rock. I don’t know who first used it either but Pete Townsend of The Who for instance used it profusely since the mid/late 60’s.

It’s called a pick scrape. You use the edge of the pick and scrape it hard along the length of the E and A string from the bridge towards the neck. Sounds really good if you then continue the scrape with a slide (glissando) down towards the headstock and end on a massive power chord.

Miss Amy reviewing Thunderstruck put a huge smile on my face. Brilliant! And her instinct about it being a group coming together in a rising chant is exactly what you see happen in live performances like the one at River Plate.

Here in Australia just the guitar riff of Thunderstruck is often played before major sporting events. ACDC had a previous incarnation in the 70s with a different singer, Bon Scott, who tragically passed from alcoholism in about 1980. Brian Johnson left his band, Geordie, and became the ACDC front man. Making ACDC a band who got better from a new lead singer. If you want to go back to the Bon Scott era, I suggest "A long way to the top if you want to rock and roll" which uses an unusual musical instrument, at least for hard rock.

This is one of those timeless rock classics that will never die. It helps that it's just recent enough to also have a fantastic original music video.
You should do the live performance in River Plate, Argentina. That video alone proves that AC/DC will never die.

The good thing about this song is that it showcases Angus and Malcolm Young, the guitarists, at the peak of their powers. The picking Angus does all the way through is not what you expect from a Rock N' Roll song but it shows how adept he is. Malcolm supplies the great riffage which we expected from him but sadly he is no longer with us.

Just out of curiosity, I searched for another Thunderstruck (studio version) reaction. I found one PDQ. And not only was it not touched by YT Big Brother, the contributor didn't even insert pauses in it. Which I understand you usually have to do for your video to stay up. So, I'm assuming has an issue with this lady, more so than the track.

I thought this would be the epitome of "industrial noise" for you Amy. You've come a long way! There's a story that Angus Young, lead guitarist, was asked about their latest album. He replied "I'm tired of critics saying we have put out eleven albums that sound exactly the same. We've put out TWELVE!" They finished with 18. My favorite was Back In Black, Brian Johnson's debut with the band.

Kings of the Aussie garage bands. They always drive the beat to make the rhythm seem like it's running ahead, it becomes infectious. This song always reminds me of watching a storm coming across the ocean (I live in new Zealand... We get a lot of that)

I love your reactions Amy. I'm an AcDc/Heavy Metal fan since 1983. I first saw them live in Dublin on that tour in 91 or 92, they played for 2 and a half hours and it was magic. Best gig I was ever at and I've seen them many times since. Coming from a classical perspective your descriptions are brilliant. From Ireland. What is wrong with TH-cam for god's sake it ruins your video! What is wrong with them?

Interestingly ACDC were not the most popular band in Australia from the mid 70's to early 80's. That title went to Skyhooks, who set sales records that lasted for many years, and Australia's best ever rock band, Cold Chisel. Skyhooks first album Living in the 70's (1974) had most of the songs banned from radio due to the sex and drug content. Both Skyhooks and Cold Chisel were released in the USA but did not make an impact because they would not base themselves there, and their acerbic and superior songwriting was completely unfashionable in an era of riff based hair metal like ACDC and Van Halen. Upon the demise of Bon Scott, it was anticipated that he would be replaced by John Swan, the older brother of Cold Chisel's lead singer, Jimmy Barnes, who both immgrated from Scotland when kids. To witness Cold Chisel's greatness, see lan Moss (the guitarist) sing live Georgia on My Mind 1983. Chisel are currently on a 50 year anniversary tour and are still playing brilliantly.

An interesting feature of guitar riff that plays from the opening second to the end of the song is that it’s a feature of the guitars tuning. Each of the melody notes in the pattern is alternated with the note the string is tuned to open (B). His fingers are just moving up and down the B string, and by alternating with the open note it makes the pattern sound much more difficult to play than it actually is, some you only have to finger every other note.

Did not think she'd like it. Awesome! Just a pity the video was cut every time I got into the song.
BTW, at our school dances, we used to make a big circle with everybody linking up, charing "THUNDER!" while stomping our feet. It had quite a primal quality.

  • @craigcolduck2077
    @craigcolduck2077 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

I never contemplated that 'rain dance' phenomenon you mentioned until now. AC/DC music tends to be very basic and most of their songs are similar, although all subtly different. I think AC/DC is like 'tribal' music for the modern west. It harkens back to the chants and rituals of our past. The music is mostly predictable and familiar, so people are able to sing along and interact with it, which I think is why it continues to appeal to successive generations of new listeners from many different languages and cultures - simple, basic regular structures with minor artistic embellishments. I would recommend watching the video of this performed live at the River Plate (Buenos Aires) to see this 'tribal' effect en masse.

Compared to all others reactions where all I hear is "Wow. What is this? How come I've never heard of this? etc etc" - I have to say I really like how you analyze and break down your thoughts on different bands and styles of music (absolutely loved all your Dire Straits and Queen reactions). I guess coming from a classical musician, there is a real study and appreciation of musical and lyrical art breakdown. Without meaning to disparage the others I feel like you are miles ahead of the game.

They're one of the only bands i can think of that never really altered their sound, "much".They didn't feel the need to go all progressive and/or soft with a bunch of ballads. You could always count on them to just have fun and rock you. Angus Young is one of the most animated lead guitarists ever, fun to watch him hop across the stage or march in place, all while constantly head-banging the entire time. I think he's in his 60's and still does it.

Lots of people recommending songs by the late great Bon Scott, I’d throw in “It”s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n Roll),” perhaps the only rock song in rotation that features a bagpipe/guitar duel. Brian Johnson’s voice has become iconic since with plenty of great tracks to check out, off the top of my head “You Shook Me All Night Long,” “Back in Black,” and “Let There Be Rock.” There are many, many more.
Also, damn it TH-cam, why do you have to keep ruining our fun? Chill, dawg.
