  • The far right in France had a big win this month, crushing the party of President Emmanuel Macron in elections for the European Parliament. But the results did not affect France’s government at home - until Mr. Macron changed that.
Roger Cohen, the Paris bureau chief for The Times, discusses the huge political gamble Mr. Macron has taken, which has brought the far right closer than ever to gaining real power in France.
Guest: Roger Cohen (www.nytimes.co...) , the Paris bureau chief for The New York Times.
    Background reading:
    • Battered by the far right in voting for the European Parliament, Emmanuel Macron called for new elections in France (www.nytimes.co...) .
    • The president has challenged voters to test the sincerity of their support for the far right. Were the French letting off steam in the European elections, or did they really mean it (www.nytimes.co...) ?
For more information on today’s episode, visit nytimes.com/thedaily (nytimes.com/the...) . Transcripts of each episode will be made available by the next workday.

The NYT used to be an institution of professional journalism.

The NYT and the neoliberal elites who form the majority of their audience are clearly a pro-War, pro-Wall Street newspaper, reflecting both factions of the Uniparty (Democrats and Republicans). Both factions are complicit in a genocide which would clearly make then both far right factions. What crime is larger than an ethno-religious genocide?
The NYT also regard the Greens and very tame social democrats like Bernie Sanders as the ‘far left’.
It has been a long time since the NYT was considered professional. They rallied behind the Iraq War, peddling lies. And they still have not retracted the lies they pushed on what happened on October 7th.

In any non-western country, national identity, even tribal identity, trumps all, and so it should in the West as well. It is fundamental for Europe, and the West as a whole, to be united in virtue of our common culture, but at the same time, we must secure our cultural identity and prevent citizenship being given to immigrants who come in their droves.

Whether it's the Right or Left, in this, the 21st century, much larger forces dictate how every day citizens live in France. The same is true in the US. One or two major issues won't change the overall quality of life experienced by people who work every day. And even though reproductive issues _do_ impact women's lives, the issue doesn't affect all women, b/c the birthrate in the US is way down. Millions of women actively prevent pregnancy and STIs.

18:23 The far right was a major cause of WW2, arguably larger than any other factors. Democracy is a bane to the far right, shown by their repeated pandering to dictators and continuous attempts to erode democratic institutions whenever they get the chance. This is why the decline in trust of these institutions is so dangerous and the work to maintain, rebuild trust in, strengthen and modernise democratic institutions is so important. To paraphrase the famous quote: in comparing types of government, democracy is messy and flawed but the alternatives are much worse. What will happen if we don't put in the work to reverse the widening wealth gap as well as start to fix other social problems caused by globalisation, greed is good madness, big money corrupting the political system, etc, etc? What is likely to happen is democratic institutions will continue to weaken, leaving the door open for more far right strong men and authoritarian regimes to take power behind a fake pretext of "freedom" and appeal to nostalgia of an unachievable "better" past that never really existed in the way they portray it (especially for those who weren't the privileged few who benefited the most). Once power is guaranteed, freedom becomes a very subjective term, more based on support/agreement for the far right leaders, those disagreeing will usually lose their freedoms.
Nothing good comes easy, we need to put in the work to keep and improve our modern democracies, because if we don't, the grifters, the corrupted power hungry, the nefarious, etc, will fill the gap.
