The slot you made with the multi-tool should have been only as wide as the narrow part of the neck. That way when you load the bottle the fatter part of the neck sits down in the hole and can't move forward without lifting it up. Hence locking the bottom of the bottle in as well.
That is a great idea. Honestly it didn't occur to us at the time but you're absolutely right. Just wide enough to fit the bottle neck! I'll do that on my next one!
