This is crazy. I started running a Ghosts of Saltmarsh campaign (set in Eberron and still ongoing) and then I found your channel when you were on Danger in Dunwater. Then a couple of months ago I started my own Homebrew Eberron campaign and you post this! Thanks for all the advice, I purchased your "Return of the Lazy DM" book and it's been ever so helpful, especially when supplemented by your TH-cam channel which always seems to be very relevant to me!
One of my players bought the Return of the Lazy DM for me as a gift, and I love it so far. Watching you go through the steps in your videos has convinced me to use this method for session and campaign prep in the future.
hey mike, been really enjoying my trawl through DM deep dive and lazy prep via google podcasts while i'm at work. Really pleased to hear about your award for return of the lazy dungeon master, i've an audible copy of it and its a must own for DM's. keep up the good work.
I've started going through your Dragon Heist prep and been loving it and it's giving me lots to think about with my own DH campaign. Now, I've also started this Eberron series and it makes me want to get another campaign under way! Patience, patience!
The multi dice attacks are technically benefited more by max damage crits, but only because it's less likely for them to roll on their extremes. Same average damage as a 1d12 weapon, but higher chance of median damage.
You're correct, although they don't have the same average outcome. 1d12 averages on 6.5, whereas 2d6 average on 7. A 2d6 weapon is better than a 1d12 weapon either way.
Thank you for the great content. It is super useful. Did you also registered the session you did with your party? If yes, where can I find it? It would be cool to see how all this prep comes together in the actual session you ran.
@@SlyFlourish thank you for your kind answer, I already listened to all of it on Spotify and I liked it a lot! I hope you'll be able to play again with him :)
As for Crit, we do max and double of JUST the weapons dice, add the bonus ONCE and anything else like sneak and smite is rolled as usual. 1d8+3 = 19 (16+3).
I know I'm a year (more or less) late, but this is what my group does. It's so much more satisfying than rolling two 1's and adding bonuses after. This rule guarantees median damage at minimum, which critical hits ought to do in our opinion.
So what's the reason behind the mourning in your eberron? Mine has to do with time manipulation. Research found in xendrik that sparked the idea of creating a time bomb that protects Cyre from the war, but something obviously went wrong. I've had a campaign using cyre that survived (in the future), and 998 start time that touched on the forces that were involved. And an about to run a new campaign that gets into the understanding around what went writing and what that means for the rest of khorvaire
21:15 "they [the Finders Guild] are not nearly as tight as like the houses" - they ARE part of House Tharashk though, aren't they? I mean, Tharashk is probably by far the most chaotic/unorganised one in and of itself and the Finders Guild is more independent still - but they do belong to the "Dragonmarked bubble", if I'm not misreading this paragraph: "Members of that house [Tharashk] operate the Finders Guild, a loose collection of independent inquisitive agencies. Dragonmarked heirs of House Tharashk own and operate some of these agencies, but each employs unmarked inquisitives as well, leaving the heirs free to take on the most difficult cases."
They way I do crits is just to treat all damage dice for that attack (including bonus die) as if they rolled the highiest they could have rolled instead of rolling extra dice. It's feels good, it's predictable and it makes it easier to balance enemy crits as well.
I feel like a session zero can be and should be run either through text messages or emails. Getting everybody together around the table but not actually playing is a good way to annoy your players and it’s kind of a waste of time. The idea of a session 0 is very good but there’s no need to do it around the table. Most people don’t like the idea of coming someplace to game and then not gaming at all
My previous session zeros were around the table. The players knew it was going to happen and what sort of session it would be. We also had a little bit of an adventure at the end anyway. Interestingly, though, we're doing our session zeros this week over Discord because of covid-19.
As a major representative for dungeons and dragons and role-playing games in general I really think it would behoove you to stop using the term race. They are in no way races. Race is a social construct but outside of that they are clearly different species. It’s an outdated term that really doesn’t serve any purpose and it’s only confusing.

That's what it's called in D&D. I hear what you're saying but that's the term used in the books.
