For my cats I have a door which opens if they are in front of it. The Sensor for it is a PIR-Sensor too, but I have reduced the sensing area with some paper board. There is only a little slit of ~5mm width, 30mm length and the sensor is facing downwards. I only have to put my hand under the sensor and it opens the door.
I must try this SD-card thing, it is nice to store some other data on it.
