Great job, but you two overlooked the most glaringly obvious and important element of this drum sound... Hot Rods... They have a distinct "splat" like sound which is immediately apparent from the very first beat of the song. They were also super trendy during that time period. It also makes laying into the drums while maintaining cymbal balance a lot easier.
I've said it before, but warrants repeating every single video: love this series! (also, Matt Chamberlain is such a solid drummer... love when he gets some mention)
Very inspiring. I'm a novice drummer at best and really only getting into it so I can record my guitar and bass parts without my songs sounding empty. My takeaways - No need for a full kit, less drums, less noise. No need for 6-8 channels for mics on the mixer. Mono with accents added - that'll help compensate for lack of talent. And it all ends up with a fuller sound. I have a Max from UA to handle the 1176 duties. This is doable! Thanks!
A lot of the final sound actually seems to be coming from the overhead. The sound was great. Any chance we can get the fleetwood mac drums as individual samples, since all that was provided on thise was a loop?
Just heard this song on the radio and wondered how they got that old school rap snare sound. Asked Siri- got here. Thanks for doing this, can’t wait to try it.
Great video! That harmonica mic is also used in voice to make a distortion effect, i think Kim Deal use it in The Breeder's Cannonball, and Les Claypool use it live with Primus and with Sean Lennon and the Delirium.
Awesome choice for a video! This album is excellent, and Matt Chamberlain is an incredible drummer. A suggestion for another video: Chamberlain's sound on Tori Amos's "Scarlet's Walk" album!
Great content! Would love to see you guys break down Lee Fields & The Expressions' "It Rains Love". One of the coolest hi-hat processing I've ever heard.
Well, it's about time you covered something from the Apple discography.. haha.. Anyway, well done on the recreation! Even more brilliant would be something/anything from "When the Pawn", which is on a whole other level and goes way beyond anything else she's ever released, sonically, thanks to Mr. Brion being at the helm. Hopefully you'll consider taking that on at some point, if so, good luck.. :) Peace.. DC
to me that overhead looked more like a C414-BTL2, not B-ULS. But I know that AKG used some wild combination of spare parts at some point in the 90ies. I own 4 C414-BTL2 that have the golden grill but at the back the name plate states B-ULS. If you open em up, you’ll see that they are BTL2. Difference is that B-ULS has a small transformer.
would love to hear you two tackle the album that made me wanna be a drummer: Vinnie on Sting’s Ten Summoner’s Tales. The obvious choice would be Seven Days, but If I Ever Lose My Faith in You would be awesome as well. The whole album is just chef’s kiss amazing. Loved this one, by the way - amazing sounds from just a few mics!
You guys are so cool, subscribed to Reverb only because of that series, "Recreating...sound". For that method, you can use a lot of mics, the trashier, the more old school (Shure SH55 works great for Amy Winehouse's Rehab Drum Sound). If you place it exactly between snare, toms and bd, you got the oldest drum microphone technique known. Ribbon Overhead, and you are in the 50s;-)
On the next one or even provide it for this and previous, the loop mix but for each mic? Especially that harmonica mic. Maybe even the unprocessed mix? Then we can mix and match even better. I understand you were going for that "sound", but just for kicks(pun maybe intended) we can add our own processing. Thanks!
Well it sounds that way because Copeland did a few overdubs on that song. He did that quite a bit and used a delay effect on his drums sometimes. One of if not my favorite drummer off all time.
I really like the concept for this series, however I feel that lately it has become more of a "tell, don't show". I feel that you guys used to show you more of the raw sound and then the incremental changes... now we just see you telling us that "you did a ton or processing"
Fiona’s first two albums will NEVER get old.
Incredible production on that record
Love Matt Chamberlain. One of the best to ever do it
He is amazing, the only one that could replace "the other Matt" Cameron on a tour with Soundgarden.

I love this series so much. Thank you!

This is so amazing! Fantastic job!

This is so interesting! Thank you for breaking it down into a science like you do!
Very nice work on this one. Excellent drumming!
Love it, thanks guys. Great job🤘

i love this kind of videos
Keep 'em coming!
Very cool. A snare drum through a harmonica mic was not a sound I knew I wanted until now.
Amazing work guys!
My mate refers to that style kick sound as the 'fridge door' sound...🤣
Great video! That harmonica mic is also used in voice to make a distortion effect, i think Kim Deal use it in The Breeder's Cannonball, and Les Claypool use it live with Primus and with Sean Lennon and the Delirium.
i'd love to see you guys try out only shallow by my bloody valentine!
As much as I love the original drum sound, I honestly think this is an improvement. Snare hits so much harder!
Awesome choice for a video! This album is excellent, and Matt Chamberlain is an incredible drummer. A suggestion for another video: Chamberlain's sound on Tori Amos's "Scarlet's Walk" album!

great sound, guys! I'd still love to hear Ramones Blitzkrieg Bop!

Amazing!
I just love this series and I don't even play drums.
Great stuff.

Awesome
I would love it if you covered Sarah McLachlan's "Black and White" snare sound. It's incredible.

An episode on Chad Sexton's snare sound would be awesome

please do Ty Segalls Manipulator drum sound!!!
Please do Bargain by The Who!
Jessica looking great as always. Dude managed to put sweat pants on.
the interview is from the trapset podcast with joe wong since they didn’t site their sources.
Can you do “Message in a Bottle” by The Police. Stewart Copeland sounds like he’s got 4 extra arms on this song.
Well it sounds that way because Copeland did a few overdubs on that song. He did that quite a bit and used a delay effect on his drums sometimes. One of if not my favorite drummer off all time.
That is the same mic clip I use for my green bullet
I heard it was an American D-22 as the trash mic. Otherwise known as the cokebottle mic.
slint slint slint slint slint slint
Do something from rolling stones tattoo you! Like neighbors, slave, or hang fire! 😮

Nice video, but drum sound still is very far from the original … mainly snare sound
