So many people in their comments seem to forget one thing. Music is ART. Musicians are artists. And as such, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.... some "see" the picture, and just like a piece of art, some don't see it, and prefer something that others fail to "see" any beauty in. I appreciate John Butler for his individual take on a classic song. And I admire his musicianship. Full stop. Life is too short to complain about a video - move on and click something you do like.
I would be over the moon if I pulled up at that little bar in the Freo markets and Johnnie and Co were busting that one out. What an awesome way to start a Super Sunday Session. Top job Lads thanks heaps
This is a great cover, John Butler is an outstanding Musician, It's all really from the heart; you can tell. I've heard people's criticism is that his weakness is in his singin but I view that this is more than compensated with his skill on guitar and the style of music he plays too! Great song!
...Holy shit. Best. Cover. Of. This. Song. I've. Ever. Heard. I'm a huge fan of The Police so I was initially nervous about this, but god-DAMN wow @_@ Major props.
Gah this guy is amazing, stop comparing and just listen, feel it, love it. That is all there is and if you don't then feel free to spend your time elsewhere doing other things.
I don´t hear any faults with his voice.. and i have done music for 14years (i´m 18), i think he sings this song like he want it to do.. and i love it..
Johns voice is in someways similar to stings (with a hint of bob Marley) they are both very unique vocally and share a similar pitch. I'm johns biggest fan but I way rather stings vocals laid over this track, I have be honest I didn't really enjoy it much because it was a similar rendition to what sting would perform acoustically but without the emotional magic that sends shivers down your spine. He instrumental however, were typically on an near orgasmic level as always. God, I wish john was looking for a guitar prodigy to train, I'd give up a winning lottery ticket for that opportunity:)!
John's just delivering his own version of the song, with his very own 'roots' touch. Covers are not meant to be a simple copy of the original song, it's a different interpretation.
I find it funny that out of all the Sting fanatics out there, none of them caught JBT messing up the lyrics. It's "an island lost at sea" not "I am lost at sea". That being said, both artists are amazing in their own right.
@zizibab Open C tuning. Intro/Verse- 779000(or bar all the 7th fret, then slide it down to 335000, then up to 557000. The picking pattern goes 6 string 5string 6string 4string tap 6string 5 string. The first time he does a riif it ends with hitting the sixth string open then picking the 5th string 5th fret and sliding up to the 7th fret, hammering on to the 8th and sliding back down to the 5th. The second time he just hits the 6th string open. Chorus- 335000*2 then 55700*2
