I remember the Conifer plantations in the north of Scotland were invested in by people trying to offset their tax liabilities, and now we are having to reverse the damage done. Its great that we are planting more tree's, but I'm dismayed by the attitude of local government and developers who seem to think its acceptable to destroy old woodland to suit their plans, and offer to plant some young saplings to offset the loss.
I planted a couple of escallonias in my front & back tiny gardens (as they're far too small for trees) which have reached a couple of metres tall, the birds are constantly in them preening themselves after using the bird baths, hiding from predators & generally being birds. British grey squirrels use them too & all are welcome.

Obviously this is the way forward, unfortunately the half whit's we have in Government are not persuaded.
