I bought the insert a few months ago and it is GREAT. You don't even need glue or tape, it fits the box so well that it is pretty much impossible for it to fall appart and it makes the box even more sturdy. I've considered buying sleeves, but not sure yet. Don't want the transparent ones as they seem very cheap.
Does it hold everything in place? When you open the box is there stuff all over the box? That's my only worry with it because I always carry the game in my backpack.
Id love to see you take another picture of all of those upgraded components trying to fit into the box. because those upgraded minis definitely don't. :)
Join me for my next video, where I demonstrate how to add "component holes" to your favorite game boxes, allowing them to finally hold oversized components! (Warning: Filling your game boxes with "component holes" is not endorsed or recommended by Pair Of Dice Paradise.)
I love the cardboard stand-ees, but that is just a personal taste. I like how they can put a bit of background on them (such as the panda grass) and fit the games weight.
You can also use D&D minis or Heroclix. They're not as big but most are fairly cheap and at coolstuffinc they count as singles so shipping isn't bad either.
Ack! Monsterpocalypse! Yes, you're right, that was totally a missed opportunity. If I make a supplemental video, I'll be sure to mention it, because Monsterpocalypse would be a slam dunk.
Way to go Chaz, I love the Component Proponent segments! I got the Star Wars Micromachines you recommend for Star Wars Risk, and they are perfect. I've been waiting for someone to make miniatures for the King of Tokyo characters
I'm considering replacing all of the counters with d20 spindowns in red, blue, and green respectively. Card sleeves are a must and I'll be eventually building a foamcore insert for this game when I'm done with higher priority games. I don't really feel much need to replace the standees because I like the original artwork, although if I had access to a 3D printer, I might considering sculpting miniature interpretations of the monsters.
First, great video once again...keep'em comin :D I was very intrigued aboot this video cause King of Tokyo is one of my favorite games I own, but I've never really thought aboot upgrading anything of it...til now :P I personally understand people wanting a better insert and sleeves, but for me I don't find them necessary at all. I actually love the little cubes best and they also remind me of Energon :D and even though the replacement hearts/stars is a neat idea, I think that it would cause people to ask "how many do you have again" just as much as you'd probably have them just in a big pile that you would constantly have to count. Now.....the idea of better monsters is GREAT!!! I'd love to have a nice plastic Kaiju monster, but me personally it would have to be the same ones or very very close for me to use them....course now you have me thinking of a re-themed version with Marvel/DC....which would be amazing!!! thanx a lot.... :)
hey big fan of the component proponent seeing as I just bought Star Wars destiny I was wondering if you had any recommendations for a deck box that would also have space for dice
Excellent question, Dave. I _believe_ that the only differences in King Of Tokyo's second edition is that all the art was updated, and maybe several of the cards were tweaked to make them more balanced. Everything else though, like the core rules, should have remained the same, and be backwards compatible with previous editions and component upgrades. I hope this helps!
Outside of the 2 monsters that were replaced in between editions. Though the second edition Power Up pack, while not compatable with King of New York, is compatable with both editions of KOT for the power up cards. Also, many of these upgrades you mentioned, Chaz, are applicable for KONY, even the BT insert is agnostic for which KO game you get. Recently, I upgraded the components to Pandemic Iberia and added a first player marker to New Dawn (the Gun Pod), all of which from the game crafter. Probably the hardest part of upgrading Iberia is finding a good replacement for the purified water tokens, but GC carries wooden water drops that are pretty similar to the water tokens in Fields of Green. I'd be surprise if it's hard to find a good replacement for the rail tokens, where Catan Roads or T2R trains could easily fit the bill. As a suggestion, if you want to stay with wooden components but not introduce problems with the nurse's protection token, I suggest a Red Catan city (as the nurse is Red). It looks distinct enough to not confuse it with the red hospital. And for games that have an objective start player and/or no way to randomly select one (Flipping a coin chit for Seven Wonders Duel feels so weird, though that could be mitigated with metal coins, also included is Potion Explosion (Last to make a drink, kinda hard to work around the dispenser to choose a start player), My Happy Farm's Most Pets, Quarantine's Last Person to Visit a Hospital (Can shuffle player tiles, but players can forget what hospital they are), and the Realms games having NO way to determine start player), I use d12 for this. If the game has player components, we pick one from a little opaque baggie or from one cupped hand (or two for a 2 player game). And if it's dice driven or has dice drafting (Blueprints and Citizen Cane), the choice is obvious. I'd rather not have meta in first player choice, as weird as it sounds. You can pick up a pack of like 25 on amazon for a good price, or your FLGS might have them for 60 cents a piece.
ThanksLomdr I did vaguely remember some funniness with some 2nd edition upgrades being backwards compatible and others that were. One thing is this Pandemic Iberia upgrade official or just some 3rd party vendor ?
Unofficial, I haven't tossed the punchout tokens in case if someone wants to play with them. I doubt that Iberia is going to get any official upgrades as it's going to be the Ticket to Ride: Marklin of the Pandemic games (Limited run only, though Marklin came back with new art, different tickets, and changed passengers as Deutschland and 1902, which is getting a modified international release as Germany. You can already play Germany in the app. But, this is all an aside). I more compare it to Marklin as Iberia is a different experience to Pandemic unlike Machi Koro Deluxe, Orleans Deluxe, or Catan Anniversary edition (upgraded components and/or everything in one box)
It would be fun to do this, but I'd imagine the cost would be far too much. Then again, if you had a super small collection a few of these upgrades would be worth it. Oh yeah, have you found any Conure proof card sleeves? Or.. Rule book sleeves? Or.. Board sleeves? I have the same model bird and many of my rule books have bite marks in them. /sigh
That's a good question. As for me, I've been looking for a conure sleeve. I figure that sleeving the bird would also protect all my gear from it. But so far, no luck. And you're right about the bite marks. While I was working on this episode, the bird took it upon himself to completely shred one of the pages of notes in my notebook.
The figures from Monsters Menace America make (mostly) good stand-ins for the KoT minis: i.ebayimg.com/images/g/moIAAOSwjqVZAg7F/s-l1600.jpg ... Although I actually sold my copy of Monsters Menace America on eBay yesterday so I'll never get to use them with KoT myself!
Try adding solders tanks and jets figures for the King of New York. You will find these pices at a website called Historical Board Gaming at www.historicalboardgaming.com/. Browse under the american Pices and find all that you want including Jets.
hooray! Another Component Proponent. Watches for a few minutes...and then I see you suggest wood glue for gluing the Broken Token organizer and I am even happier. Right choice :) Chalk up another win for Chaz :)
Ah this is one game that remains in my collection despite the fact that I really don't like it. I only keep it because it is a simple game and easy for people to learn that don't play modern board games. Despite not being a fan of the game, I enjoyed the video as always.
Thanks! Also, I have a couple of games in my own collection for the same reason. So, I'm curious, how often do you find yourself playing the games in your collection that aren't necessarily your favorites, but you keep around specifically for others who are either not gamers, or may enjoy it?
It can vary but I would say it ranges from every two weeks to every other month. Depends on if I meet someone new that seems like they are interested in games or what game my friends want to play. Even though I would rather be playing something else, it is nice to get together and play a game.
I don't upgrade components...But I did do an upgrade of King of Tokyo for my friend's Bachelor Party. I printed out naked women and made cardboard cutouts of them to take the place of the monsters. King of Sluttokyo....great for a gamers bachelor party!
Neither of the suggested replacements for the energy cubes are better than the original cubes...
I got the dark edition of tokyo which came with lighting shapes
I ended up by cubes on ebay for cheap as they're too fiddly

@@ibarrawbjr19 hello, if had the insert for 3 years and things don't move around at all. I even fit all the expansions in it.
@@TheShapingSickness thats dope, thanks! I'll think ill get it then.
For a "cleaner" look taping inserts: use cloth tape (like that used for book binding).
Id love to see you take another picture of all of those upgraded components trying to fit into the box. because those upgraded minis definitely don't. :)

One of my groups always refers to the energy cubes as Power Jelly. Lime I assume.

Excellent suggestion, Wynn. I've picked up a few of CoolStuff's "100 Random HeroClix" bags in the past, just for this type of thing! :)
I'm legitimately shocked you didn't mention Monsterpocalypse figures as replacements. You really can't get any better.
Ack! Monsterpocalypse! Yes, you're right, that was totally a missed opportunity. If I make a supplemental video, I'll be sure to mention it, because Monsterpocalypse would be a slam dunk.
I just use my Godzilla figures to replace the standees. Godzilla for Gigazaur, Mecha-Godzilla for Meka-Dragon, King Kong for The King, etc.
Way to go Chaz, I love the Component Proponent segments! I got the Star Wars Micromachines you recommend for Star Wars Risk, and they are perfect. I've been waiting for someone to make miniatures for the King of Tokyo characters
awesome video, thank you. This gives me an idea for replacing the card board boats in Islebound for some kind of cool mini boats.

The dungeons and dragons and star wars huge sets have a few that could easily be used.
Absolutely! I hadn't even thought of Star Wars, but it definitely has some creatures that would mesh into King Of Tokyo really well. Good tip!
I would go with the Arcadia Quest heart tokens.
I have King of Tokyo. It comes with an insert. Did it not during the time of this video’s release?
Glad to see I'm not the only one who's been calling them 'energons' all these years!
hey big fan of the component proponent seeing as I just bought Star Wars destiny I was wondering if you had any recommendations for a deck box that would also have space for dice
Upgrades are fine, but... That dog! I need more of that dog!
Even 2nd edition get their own upgrades and are those upgrades backwards compatible with the previous editions ? my poor little head is spinning !

Chaz, I didn't know you were a scientist! 😉
can someone list all monster including the new version and any promo, exclusive, and DLC monsters monsters
What component do you suggest upgrading with the live bird, again? Must have missed that part of the audio.
It would be fun to do this, but I'd imagine the cost would be far too much. Then again, if you had a super small collection a few of these upgrades would be worth it. Use sky lander figures you can more than likely find one that almost match the ones in the game
How about a pile of small skyscrapers to represent Tokyo?
Kaiju parrot!
"that's a mess". This is the most organized mess I have ever seen! if at least, my mess would look lie yours !

Video starts @3:00
This idea of a series is AMAZING
There will never better a better component than card sleeves, am I right?! So many card games get ruined over time.
Try adding solders tanks and jets figures for the King of New York. You will find these pices at a website called Historical Board Gaming at www.historicalboardgaming.com/. Browse under the american Pices and find all that you want including Jets.
5:28-5:35 = Hilarious!
The energy packs are not super detailed or super cool. They are a mess. Just look at how incorrectly painted they are.
hooray! Another Component Proponent.
Watches for a few minutes...and then I see you suggest wood glue for gluing the Broken Token organizer and I am even happier. Right choice :) Chalk up another win for Chaz :)
watched it with my eyes.
