I am Florida Zone 9 and our weather is so unpredictable during this time of year. Not everyone has space to do this but I start all my seeds indoors with grow lights. I can control the temperature, water, and light. Plus they are in my face so I can make sure they are not drying out. I started indoor seeding 3 years ago and the success rate was much better so I took over most of my dining room (we never use it anyway) and created a grow space.
I also want to personally thank you for specifying cool season and warm season your seed packs. Super helpful when I pull out your flower seed packs each year. 👍🏻

My intention has been to plant in late August, but I have been SO busy I'm just not starting my seedlings; two months later than I was hoping. Fingers crossed they grow well.

South SJ, zone 9B this year I started a batch of brassicas in July. With much effort to keep them from frying they’re looking great! I’ve sowed every month since then. The cabbage moth is my biggest challenge right now.

I had to build a chicken wire top for my seed starting table. The squirrels were enjoying the yummy peas.

Great tips. I never started my cool season seedlings this early. Until I started following you. Success!!! (Still working on Brussels sprouts, haven’t quite got the timing right yet). Love your seeds, and your Calendar is a staple in my house and my daughter’s too. The Calendar is Amazing!!! Like having you alongside me guiding me as I plan and plant my garden. Thank you for taking so much time and effort to give us that phenomenal product.

I am in zone 8a. I got my flowers in late, end of Sept. They have sprouted, i just hope they get big enough before the first frost.

Started cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower on August 25. They're about 14" tall now and looking beautiful. Zone 10a.

Once we place the seeds in the tray how long do we let it absorb the water? Do we empty it out like you did for pre-moistening? I’m in 9B. Still warm but getting cooler.

No more than 24 hrs, or as soon as it's saturated through.

Pro tip: for a super cheap soil sifter for seedlings, use a kitchen colander from IKEA. 😏

Question… Can I use vermiculite on top of the seeds instead of sifted soil to help hold in the moisture?

Yes, this works especially well with tiny seeds since it's a light material

Now I have algae on seedlings! How do I get rid of it?

      sprinkle cinnamon

Scrape it off and add vermiculite that will help dry out the top of the soil and prevent more growth.
