📽 📽 IN THIS WEEK'S VIDEO: We do a double blind head-to-head between Wild Turkey Rare Breed and Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered to determine which we like more separate and apart from any labels, hype, or bias. We also discuss which we think is the better value.

I think the 1st say 100 batches of smoke wagon uncut were better than what is coming out now. Rare breed is a solid and consistent drinker at every liquor store for a reasonable price
I had batch 129....just finished it off.... It was delicious.... Thinking about replacing it, but it is a bit pricey near me.... I paid $89,but I see it now for $75....Rare Breed is $69 near me.... Oh the choices!
OMG I almost fell out of my chair laughing with your pro tip of the day. Erin's look was priceless.. She wanted to blurt out that's what she said so badly.
I DID want to!!
Quick shoutout to y'alls decorative abilities. Absolutely LOVE the setup in this room. The cabinet/mirror/art/lighting combo is chef's kiss.
Thanks so much! Speakeasy inspired with a midcentury modern twist is definitely a style we love. Appreciate the kind words!
@@stuffandwhiskeyThat’s so cool looking.
Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered is a good sipper
I just want you guys to know your show has gone to the top of our list for bourbon shows. And we follow several. My wife and I look forward to your shows. Really love the spontaneity. Keep up the good work.
"A bottle only a bubba could love". Was what I heard when he took that pause. 😆
That works too! 😂
It’s time for a shirt with the still photo of your pro tip of you both!! Haha! So funny
Just had wild turkey rare breed for the first time yesterday. I got pop rocks too! I also thought it was pretty spicy, in terms of that tongue feel similar to cinnamon mints. Really liked it, different from what I had and definitely keeping a bottle stocked
Erin, “ baby powder cotton candy” I’ve never gotten that from Rare Breed, but I love it. I’ve gotten chocolate from whiskeys that nobody else does. But to each their own.
Yup, thats the great thing about whiskey and drinking it with others, everyones palate is different. Like its a lot easier to find the nutty profile in beam, turkey, and heaven hill than my brother. Its not a profile i like, it is a profile he likes, but it still stands out way more for me than it does for him. Like some pours its so over powering for me, and he doesnt taste it at all. He tends to find chocolate and butterscotch easier and more than i can. Then there's my buddy alex that just comes up with the most random stuff like erin, and Trenton from SLB lol.
Trenton, pencil eraser and basketball. Lol
Good job! I absolutely love your chemistry together and enjoy your out-of-this-world taste examples. Josh - awesome British accent 😉. Next do Cajun... Repeat after me... "Don-da-by-ya" (down the bayou) 😂
It's always a huge compliment when folks comment on and appreciate our chemistry together. We do have a ton of fun doing these videos together. Appreciate you tuning in!
Going on with the "your palate can change over time, you're palate can change day to day", which is all very much true, you're palate will also change doing blinds than knowing what you are drinking, 1) because when you know what you are drinking, you are looking for those notes you know and love. When you dont know what you are drinking, you are searching for every note you can. 2) when doing blinds, coming off one pour and going to another is going to change the next pour, even if you cleanse your palate, as well as, having pour A with pour B will change how A taste when having A with C. Depending one what you are drinking it with changes how it will taste in a good way or bad way, like pairing with right wine w the right food or wrong food.
Loved them both.
The Uncut the Younger is $36 here at my local store so I keep it around. 125 proof and I don't mind the less age. MGP high rye is my jam.
Rare Breed is my all time favorite- love it!!!
Nice “pro tip” Josh!😂😂😂
Erin is the embodiment of the movie Ratatouille. 😂 .... the scene where the mouse sees fireworks when he tastes the cheese and fruit together.
Comment of the day! 😂
lol...."yes you can try"..........such an under the radar flame! 😃 Great review, and totally agree that the UCUF has become, in my area, as available as the RB. Good stuff....just maybe not $80 good. That said I have them both on my shelf. Cheers!
Ha! Erin’s reaction to the pro tip…“that’s what she said.”
That look said it all, right? 😂
With how much y'all sip and compare RB in these head to heads you should be able to spot it as soon as it hits the glen lol
One would think, right? 😂 Blind tastings are fun and interesting like that, especially when you're not trying to figure out what you're drinking and going purely on the impression the glass gives you.
I love the Smoke wagon uncut unfiltered I get a apple/over ripe apricot on some charred oak log and a ginger fermented apricot on the palette I love this bottle
Oooh we’ve had some batches like that of SWUU and they’re awesome! This particular batch was the most rye-forward we’ve ever had. That’s part of the fun of that line in that you can try different batches and see how they compare.
Smoke wagon has never won in a blind for me. I don’t dislike it but have found I tend to only favor older MGP juice (8+). Like Pinhook single barrel picks or newest vertical series. Rare Breed is always solid for me. It competes in every blind even if it doesn’t win them all.
The Fun Dip stick was the best part
Yea I need to replace my WTRB bottle. Currently 2 ounces sitting in it lol😅
Rare Breed is in my top 5 and I always keep a backup on hand. I've been fascinated with Smoke Wagon...I think I'm going to try Smoke Wagon The Younger. Basically half price, $40 locally in the Tulsa metro area. I'm working on getting WTRB NCF. A friend of a friend is currently traveling outside of the US on business. ❤🥃🤞🛩
Unfortunately people don't get as excited about bourbon if it's easy to find, regardless of the quality and taste.
Baby powder , cotton candy .....and dirt. One of the many reasons I watch your channel.
Hahaha, we appreciate you watching Robert! Cheers!
Great video. I agree with your rant. First time I had rare breed, the alligator barrel char was very forward. That smoky char made me fall in love with it. I’ve had two bottles since then and there was zero char flavor and more alcohol taste. Not sure what changed with the batches over the last few years but I’m not as impressed. My guess is they’re using less of the 12 year product in the mix due to demand. Used to be my absolute favorite but it has lost a step in quality.
I really wanted to like Smoke Wagon (both their small batch and UCUF), especially for the price, but it just didn't impress me.
Rare Breed, on the other hand, is always a winner, both the bourbon and the rye. I bring those bottles with me to parties and neighbors' houses and it always goes over well.
I am a big fan of Rare Breed, I’ve heard newer batches aren’t as good that maybe they reduced the aged whiskey going into it. 🤷🏻♂️ I’ll probably still replace mine when it’s gone.
Oh it’s definitely worth replacing! And over time it’ll continue to change as seasons and wood interact differently with the whiskey. As long as Jimmy and Eddie are there we’re pretty confident that Rare Breed will always be a staple.
Came here for the whiskey, stayed for the pro tips.
😂😂
You mentioned that Rare Breed, at 13% rye, is "high rye." So Knob Creek, also at 13%, is high rye?
With some of the other big names being much higher than 13% -- Old Forester and Barton at 18% and Four Roses at 20% and 35% -- what percentage rye would be considered "moderate rye"? What percentage rye would be "low rye"?
Are we doing something like Jack at 8% is low rye, Heaven Hill at 10% is moderate rye, and 13%-35% is high rye? Two percentage points separate "low rye" from "moderate rye" and 3 percentage points separate "moderate rye" from "high rye"?
Good question. Generally speaking those percentages are pretty spot on by most people’s standards. I think it’s also how the rye comes through. Beam often doesn’t get called high rye since it has less spice than Turkey even though their percentages are the same.
In my blind, the Rare Breed was the clear winner. Smoke wagon was good, don't get me wrong, but the Wild Turkey was clearly better to my pallet.
Me thinks this was the tail end of some batch filming? Y'all silly! Plus, just go to Kentucky and get a barrel of Rare Breed already. ;-) C'mon 20K!!!
Funnily enough, it was the first one of the day. We're just cutting loose and hanging out a bit more during recording rather than trying to stick to the whiskey only. It's fun when the pours give us a lot to work with as well. 20K is right around the corner too! May make for a good celebration on the March livestream if we're there by then!
Break out the Tweed my good man!!
I think Erin's palate is changing. Not getting the "stinky feet" on wheated bourbons anymore. The more we drink the more we adjust!. Great review.
There has definitely been a shortage of "stinky feet" commentary lately. Will be interesting to see if it comes back around or not!
Both favorites of mine, both great values for me. I'm surprised by the sweetness on the RB. Not the spice and effervescence. UCUF has been getting more and more fruits to it and definitely citrus. I might pick either on a good day, but UCUF has been changing over the past 3-4 years.
Y'all are probably tired of my lighting comments 😀, but it is better here. Instead of it looking like there's a kerosene lamp at each end of the room and that's all the light there is, it looks like there are still just a couple of lamps but now they're on the table. 🙂
7:59 If earthiness is just something not sweet it really doesn't mean anything. It might be spicy, mineral, leafy, grassy, bitter, sour... What earthy means to me is something that calls to mind the soil. It doesn't taste like dirt, but it calls dirt to mind. The only whisky that's ever given me earthy notes is Laphroaig 10, where the peat gives an impression of peat, as well as the chemical and bandaid notes. 🙂
Good eye! While we had standardized for televisions in most of January’s videos, we did hear the comments from you and many others, so we’ve been working on this color grade behind the scenes in an attempt to have our content look good on all devices, televisions, and platforms. It took some work but I think we got there. Very happy with how it’s looking now. Everything on the channel should look like this going forward.
WHISKEY CHEERS 😎
Rare Breed has a bright, treble taste. Smokewagon UU is a heavy, low tuned down flavor. Similar to Judas Priest vs Black Sabbath. I love the dark stuff.
This particular batch of SWUU was a lot brighter than Rare Breed but love the music analogy. We do gravitate to the darker stuff.
good point need to separate
"thats a spicy sensation"
from
"that is a spicy flavor"
100%! It’s a huge difference!
350+ shelf bottles is a little more than a social sipper ;)
Recording a Q&A today for quite a while down the road (April) but this is a great comment to address and will make for some fun conversation. Thanks for watching!
@@stuffandwhiskey a friend of mine has quite a collection (I call him a hoarder) but he doesn’t actually drink that often. He just has a hard time passing on bottles he likes so he has multiples of each. He is prepared for the zombie apocalypse.
Rare Breed absolutely slaps Smoke Wagon and for 2/3 of the price. Rare Breed Rye is even better.
I'm with you on Smoke Wagon; decent but not worth money imo! Doesn't fit my flavor profile!
See! "When in doubt put it in your mouth" Seriously!? I tell my wife that all the time... and then she calls me stupid and doesn't talk to me the rest of the day. It's for science I say. 😢 Thankyou... at least someone gets me.
😂 😂
I’m a big fan of Smokewagon UU! Maybe y’all just got a so-so batch
I felt the same, both bottles of Smokewagon UU that I've had were incredible and didn't match any of those notes. I always want to backup my Smokewagon UU. On Rare Breed, I'd rather spend a bit more and get a Russell's Reserve Single Barrel (or store pick).
It's definitely batch dependent. Aaron at Smoke Wagon turns out batches and shoots for different things in the profiles based on the stocks he has on hand.
When Rare breed was 55 to 60 I wasn't going to buy it again. But I found it at $43 and I got 3 bottles!
Fantastic price!
@@stuffandwhiskey I KNOW! Most places here sell for 55-60 (above my price limit)
I wish you lived next door
Erin kills me
I'm biased but I agree. She's the best!
I think you should do a whole episode in British accent.
Smoke wagon you see UF was a great bottle when the whiskey inside was older now it is just MEH. If you can get your hands on a travel exclusive non-chill filtered rare breed I highly recommend it.
You guys are so fun
Thank you so much Tim!
Fun dip is so good but the white stick is pretty meh. I didnt even always eat the stick. (Thats what she said)
She is so funny
When in doubt put it in your mouth and find out😂😂😂😂. Erin almost spit out her drink haha. The most earthy whiskey that actually literally tasted like dirt was the Elijah Craig rye. It was awful. I love Elijah Craig but oh my gosh it tastes like dirt fresh soil. I like earthy whiskey but that was just straight dirt
WTH is fun dip??
Steven you’ve never had Fun Dip!? It’s pure sugary delicious sweetness!
@@stuffandwhiskey I have not. Never even heard of it. I'm curious now. LOL
It's Ne-VAD-uh NOT Ne-VAH-duh. But, I also prefer WT RB to SW UCUF ;)

I'm new to tasting whiskey. Can you describe barrel funk a little more? Funk, to me, has a negative meaning, like locker room funk. Yuck!
I compare it to the funk that blue cheese has (while I don't like blue cheese, some people love it and it's "funk") or something like truffle. Just has a weird unique flavor that is enjoyable. I'm not saying the funk tastes like blue cheese or truffle I'm just comparing the reaction from them
That's one kind of funk. Cheeses can have a level of funk and still be good. So do fermented hot sauces. So can wood. Think a hint of old wood, or damp wood, or walking past a slightly rotted log in the woods, or walking into an antique furniture store, just maybe a hint of mustiness. It's a round smell, not a sharp pointy one.
I think most people would compare barrel funk to the smell of freshly turned, moist mulch.
Recording a Q&A today for quite a while down the road (April) but this is a great question and we're definitely answering it on there. To address it here though, as has been said, it can range from a pleasant funk like cheese has, an earthy/umami funk, a bit of mustiness like an antique store or attic, etc. If you think of both new wood and charred wood's influence on a clear spirit, that's not always going to be a "clean" taste, as the spirit is interacting directly with burnt wood. Pleasant funk can be a beautiful thing.
