    In this video we look into the classic mawashi geri from traditional/ sport karate, the Thai kick, and less common roundhouse kick utilized in full contact karate and self defense.
    The experiment is designed to show that raw power and speed are just a few factors in how strong a kick will feel to the opponent. The volunteers wore a 4 inch belly pad designed for boxing and kickboxing. We made sure to start with lighter contact and ramp up until the volunteers chose to stop.
    Keep in mind this type of experiment involves years of training to perform safely and should not be performed without the supervision of a qualified instructor

    Big fan of the ball of the foot version. You can tuck it behind their arm and get the liver or ribs if they are using a low guard . BUT it's also a great way to break your pinky toe (3 times) so may want to tape up. I tend to wear heavy shoes or boots so it's perfect for me . Makes a wicked inner or outer leg kick too as an entry

      Totally agree. I’ve broken toes and my foot several times over the years catching elbows while kicking. A lot of people over look kicking with the ball of the foot or even toes for self defense. Assuming you’re wearing shoes.

      A lot of people including me have stiff big toes that don't bend back as well as the other. You can live with it when you do a mae geri but mawashi is difficult. I'm envious of my wife who can bend them better, she can kick a hole in anything😆

      It can be something you train to develop foot dexterity but your own physiology will have limitations @@stettan1

    Was the last one was TMA karate ? I think the first was Kyokushin kick

    • @JasonNishime
      @JasonNishime  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The first and last are both considered traditional karate kicks. Depending on the school or style they may use both. The ball of the foot is probably the most traditional way while the top of the foot is used more in sport applications ( both point and full contact)
      Thanks for the comment

    is there a name for that final stabbing ball of the foot roundhouse? either in japanese or english?

    • @JasonNishime
      @JasonNishime  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We’ve always just called it mawashi geri. The mechanics of the kick don’t really change much, just the striking surface. As far as a traditional kick goes I’m pretty sure the ball of the foot was used before the top of the foot as it’s a much stronger structure

      I've heard it called "chusoku" mawashi geri- literally just "ball of foot roundhouse kick."

    No one kicks with there foot. It's not soccer

      @JasonNishime  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is actually considered correct in most traditional karate competitions including full contact.
