Great info! For people trying to avoid plastic, you can use about 2 or 3 inches of shredded leaves (not whole because they mat up) on top of your compost layer. Garlic pokes right thru but weeds have a hard time.

I soak my garlic bulbs in bamboo vinegar fish hydrolysate humic acid and liquid kelp for 12 hrs when I plant I use a two year aged Johnson su compost I add gypsum insect frass mix it in the compost and make a deep hole fill it in with the compost then seed my garlic water in with fish hydrolysate and silica its amazing how crazy the root development is I pulled one garlic bulb out it hadn’t sprouted yet and when I pulled it out there was a massive clump of roots I couldn’t believe how developed the roots where looked like a full grown garlic plant root system

I have never grown garlic before so I’m wondering…
Can I plant the elephant garlic that I purchased, from a nursery (very expensive), in pots? It only had 2 cloves, so it would be 1 in each pot.

Yes absolutely, garlic grows great in pots or grow bags.

You can cheat, I usually find good elephant garlic at grocery stores. I've seen them $4 to $6 per bulb with about 5-7 cloves. Even though they are California grown, they naturalized here in VA within 2 years.

I’m in zone 6a. And this is my first year planting garlic. I planted in early Oct and we have had a few hard freezes mid and late Oct. I’ve put mulched leaves on top for some good insulation. I have noticed it already growing with small sprouts, is that normal going into winter. Should I just apply another layer of the leaf mulch? And will it be ok for winter months ahead. Thanks, been a viewer for a very long time keep up the great work.

Yes it is normal. Garlic is supposed to sprout and have a single green leaf during all of winter. During this time it builds its root system. When warmer weather hits, the green growth takes off as a rocket. The reason for the timed planting is you want enough time for one green shoot to grow, but not so much that multiple shoots grow and open and now catch the snow and can rot.

Very informative video and thanks for sharing the knowledge. Regarding the knowledge, I'm wondering are you up for a collaboration to share knowledge and skill of chainsaw usage and maintenance? Hipa supplies parts and chains for chainsaws and maybe we would work together to help more DIYers in the community. I shot an e.mai.l to you.
