- Between the Sonic movie's release and Forces going free on PS Plus, it seems that Sonic's been the talk of the town again, eh?
With that in mind, I decided to ride the train while it's still going and take a look at one of his many bizarre escapades from the 2000s. Should make for fun times.

Sonic Riders was one of the first racing games I ever played, and it still holds up tremendously.
Love the story, the fast-paced gameplay, the amount of content, the mechanical depth and mastery...it's all so good.

I believe the reason Deem Bristow's SA2 lines were used was for the purpose of tributing him since he died a year or two prior.

There's a competitive mod for Sonic Riders called "Sonic Riders Tournament Edition". You can play it online via Dolphin emulator netyplay or Parsec, the community is on discord and it's big and very active, the game constatly gets updates and online tournaments. I hope SEGA can bring back the Riders series, if not I just hope we can get a competitive scene for Riders Tournament.

The 4Kids dub is my favorite too. I especially love Lisa Ortiz as Amy, she sounds so cute and Lisa actually enjoys playing the part.

Shame I don't have a PS2 or the games with it anymore.
I remember playing this game as a kid and I never really had trouble learning the game's mechanics aside from the fact that I thought you had to hold forward to keep going when you didn't have to, but playing it again, while I've been having more fun with it, I'm also beginning to understand how others would have that issue. I also remember everyone saying that this game was terrible and had "cHeAtInG Ai" despite a bare minimum understanding of the game disproving that accusation almost immediately.
i spent so many hours of my childhood playing this wonderful game and i recently rediscovered how amazing it is. i am so deeply saddened that free riders was the last game in the series and that we may well never get a sonic game or even spinoff that i can enjoy as much as this. i LOVE LOVE LOVE Sonic Riders to the point that it may be unhealthy
I recently got back into Sonic Riders thanks to a Discord Server made by a team of dedicated Sonic Riders fans. They created a mod made for the GC version to make a more competitive Riders (its meant for Dolphin emulator as it has Netplay aka online play). It's called Sonic Riders: Tournament Edition and if anyone is interested I'll provide 2 links: one for their website (which has all the information the mod changes) and one for the Discord Server. I've been having a nostalgic blast going back to this game. They're also going to start a tournament, I recommend watching at least some of it to write some notes as some of these players are REALLY good.

You hit the nail on the head about the lack of an in-depth tutorial. Me and my bro struggled to figure everything out, but once we did, we definitely enjoyed it. (and you are correct, the Tag Racing Mode is fun with 2 people instead of an AI.)
This game is really good, one of my favorite Sonic games.
A remake or a sequel that has all of its mechanics and more characters and race tracks is one of my dreams.
I’ve only played Zero Gravity, but from that game and the cutscenes of these games. The Babylon Rogues were some of my favorites. I really wish Sega would try and use them more often. Even if they are just “evil Sonic and friends” it doesn’t seem fair for them to just be disowned and stuck in a currently dead spin-off.

Can we agree that sonic Rider duo game lore is the most strangest within the sonic universe? Eggman can announce a tournament and the sonic crew doesn't mind joining in when it's clearly obvious to be a trap of some kind. maybe it's me but i truly remember hating the Final race in the Bablyon story with Wave. I swear doing her Fly shortcut there's one bit where it never tells you that you have to Jump in order for it to activate when every Fly Short cut in other races doesn't require you to jump.
I do miss the days when Sega use to have characters joins as guest appearances

I never watched Cobani's Free Riders LP, so I have no idea.
I appreciate the compliment, but unfortunately, TH-cam doesn't seem to be too interested in pushing my content all that much.
Also, I hadn't really thought of a potential 50K special, but I suppose there's no harm in planning something just in case.
I don't mind at all with eggman and his two voices. The two are so similar that, until this video pointed it out, I had no idea it was two different voice actors.
I remember my brother and I playing Sonic Riders on the gamecube all the time. I would play as Jet and he would play as Shadow.

Something i should actually bring up, the babylon guardian fight is actually easier if you *don’t* stay in first the entire time. Don’t forget about turbulence, it lets you keep moving without using any air, and if you use it well, you can have completely full air while in the lead and get a free hit in. The fight still sucks, but not as much as he makes it out to be in the videos he ranted in.

If I could summon a game with the snap of my fingers I would want a new Sonic Riders game (or at least a collection of the 3 games). Also next year will be this game's 15th anniversary.
Honestly the sixth generation was kind of an experimental era for gaming as a whole.
It really was. I get why that era died out, but I do miss it regardless.

16:56 I'm gonna be honest, I legitimately had a lotta fun playing Free Riders. Even though people say the controls are lame, but I for one didn't experience quote-unquote 'issues' or at least got them in the way too much.
I really like this video. Subscribed :) AND YOU MENTIONED FRONTFLIPS AND BACKFLIPS TOO! Sonic Riders was and still is SOOOOO GOOOOD. Honestly it's the best Sonic racing game to date. It's my favourite sonic spinoff in general. the game takes skill, and actual thinking. This video explains this game sooo welll.
So it's really clear that you like Sonic Riders! many think that the game is dead but right now there is a rapidly growing Sonic Riders competitive community that believes that this game can become a successful esport. It's called Sonic Riders: Tournament Edition. The devs have tweaked the gears and characters so the game is more suited to competitive play. Which means no more High Booster or darkness only in races.
There's tournaments relatively frequently and a community that's extremely welcoming. there's no better time to get into riders than right now! yes i'm serious.

I Remember loving this game as a kid. Surprisingly deep mechanics for a racing spinoff of a declining franchise, although I still love Sonic to death despite the decline and it's missteps. I hope they remaster or reboot this game, because I would love a chance to play it again since I no longer have a 360 to play it on. Maybe it'll get a Switch port? Stranger things have happened.

I love the energy in this review. Your passion for the game made this a great watch, and it even made me bust out my old copy of Riders.
That said, upon revisiting the game, I have a few gripes that you seemed to miss.
-The rubber banding in the AI is pretty atrocious. The AI will reach speeds impossible for a human player just to catch up to you. This is most obvious in the automated "spin the control stick" sections, where they'll often enter before you and exit in front of you (the rapids in the river/cave stage are the best place to see this). Of course, the rubber banding only works one way. The 1st place AI will never slow down or miss a jump or anything like that so you can catch up. Super fair for the human player.
-The mechanic for speed characters attaching on to rails is a bit wonky. Sometimes I get on rails and I think "how on EARTH did I make that?" and other times I had everything perfect but I just fall through the rails instead. This is especially true for attaching to another rail in midair, which are probably about 50/50... not the best odds to stake a race on.
--The turbulence mechanic kinda sucks. It's not clear what makes the turbulence appear behind a player, so the leaders of the pack (if they're human) have no way of determining whether they're giving their opponents a boost. For the humans in the back of a pack, they'll usually get sucked into the turbulence, especially on a narrow path, like in the third set of stages (the ones in Eggman's factory). This is good sometimes, but since the trail follows the EXACT path of the one who made it, that means anyone riding turbulence isn't going to collect any rings or items. It's also hard for humans to disengage from the turbulence in a timely manner, meaning by the time you actually want to get off the trail for something, its too late and whatever you wanted is long behind you. The worst is when the turbulence drops you RIGHT into an area meant for a different character type, like a power character getting dropped into a pit because the flying character happened to take a flying boost ring.
-The ball-and-chain item. You remember how everyone hated the thundercloud in Mario Kart Wii? Yeah, well at least that one could be passed to other players and had a higher likelihood of hitting players in the front of the pack than the back.
I’ve been replaying Sonic Riders recently and your right. Once you get used to the mechanics, it really is a lot of fun! I honestly enjoy it over Team Sonic Racing. Makes me wish Sega returns to the Riders series in the future, but further polish the mechanics and put in better tutorialisation.
I honestly have to disagree with people who say Sonic stopped being experimental because it still is
Colors has the wisps which, at the time that game was released, was a pretty new and fresh take on Sonic power ups. Generations had the ability to play as Classic Sonic. Lost World had a massive gameplay overhaul with its parkour based mechanics. And Forces had its avatar creator.
Sure not all of them were well received when they were first released, but then again neither were a lot of the gimmicks in the Adventure-Dark Age Sonic games as well (before people's hatred of the newer games made them go nuts and can't make up their mind on what makes a good Sonic game).
Riders though, I think is one of the better instances of this and a very underappreciated spin off

Hey, About your complaint about the lack of tutorial. Did the game come with a manual? I understand that tutorials started coming in during this time in video games but I think some games still relied on people using the manual. Does it mention about the tricks in there?

I've always wanted this game as a kid (mainly because of sonic being in it) but could never find it XD I'll have to keep an eye out at my local thrift store (whenever it opens again lol)
Sonic Riders is my favourite post-SA2 Sonic game...... at least until Mania came out.
Don't know if someone has mentioned this yet, but Sonic Riders' manual goes a bit more in-depth into how the gameplay works

I hope you finish the technical issues with Zero Gravity, it was the only one I played out of the three.
03:14 - That's the fault of the localizers. If you watch the cutscenes of this game with Japanese subtitles, it'll make more sense.

6:07 - Yes, that is true, but the scene of him saying he's gonna do some more fine tuning to the board happens after she placed the bomb on it. I more so included the customized bit to show that he was in charge of maintaining Sonic's board and thus, probably would've noticed the bomb.
@@BenjaMage Ah, now I remember. Remember the scene (the one with Jet and Sonic chasing Eggman) where Sonic and Jet race? Before the race, Tails, hands Sonic a new gear for Sonic to race against Jet. That might've been what Tails meant when he said he needed to "fine tune a few things."
On a separate note, you gotta love how Tails took what wasn't even constructive criticism to begin with and makes it constructive anyway.

Something that impresses me about Sonic Riders is that it’s PS2 port may be on par with the GameCube and Xbox versions. Which is saying a lot considering Sonic hasn’t had the best luck on that console. You look at the PS2 ports of Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog where they were infamous for their frame rate issues, graphical hiccups, sound errors and glitches within gameplay. I’m not very knowledgeable for Riders Zero Gravity’s PS2 port. But from what I saw of it, it looks on par with the Wii port. Which is impressive. It only lacks the widescreen feature. As for Unleashed on PS2. It’s the Wii version, except the graphics look horrible for PS2 standards and there’s no widescreen feature. However, it was still playable and I didn’t encounter any glitches within gameplay. Plus, it may be the best way to play as the Warehog in the Non-HD version of Unleashed as you use the O and Square buttons for attacking rather than shaking the Wii Remote and Nunchuck or shoulder buttons for the Classic and GameCube controllers.
So on hindsight, Riders May be the best PS2 Sonic port.

Sonic Riders was the first Sonic game I actually owned so this one has some significance to me as a player. However, once Zero Gravity came, that game seemed a little too insignificant in comparison. But I openly admit I like both Riders games. Not Free Riders because the same reasons ya said.
I'm just wondering, have you heard of Sonic riders tournament edition? It's a mod of Sonic riders that has tons of balance changes, is a lot more suitable for racing, and lets you race online. Im just asking because I recently got into it and thought it was a huge coincidence.

The first one is - since you're a fan of Crash Tag Team Racing - *Jak X: Combat Racing.* It's fairly similar in the gameplay department, just by NaughtyDog and featuring the characters of the Jak and Daxter series... and a coherent plot.
Suggestion number two is one you MIGHT be bit hesitant top try because of the franchise in question, but if you give it a chance it might also surprise you. It's *Skylanders: SuperChargers Racing.* Not an amazing racing game, but it does have some pretty good ideas and concepts and the gameplay itself is still fun.
Also, on a related note, if you ever feel like reviewing a 'racing simulator' style game, one game I would like to see you cover - aside from the original Gran Turismo - is *Colin McRae Rally 2.0.* For a game that's over 20 years old, it does a lot of things ahead of its time!
