Sarahan also has India's only conservation breeding centre for mountain pheasants. The national bird of Himachal Pradesh, Western tragopan is categorised as vulnerable by IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). An estimated 3500 only are left in the wild according to Birdlife International.
The breeding centre has managed hatching Western Tragopan chicks which grow to maturity and the next step is to introduce them in the wild.
The Himalayan Monal, state bird of Himachal till 2007, is also under threat of being robbed of its natural habitat due to the hydroelectric projects in the himalayan areas. Koklass pheasant is another pheasant with a distinct call piercing the mountain air, becoming rarer by the day.

Wow, the photographer is best because they give us these wonderful bird picture...
Thank you. Appreciate your comment
An excellent compilation featuring a host of birds which claim Sarahan area and beyond in Himachal Pradesh as their home. Tragopan, the state bird of Him Pradesh is a bird of great beauty and a regal stance. The music in the documentary enhances the pleasure of watching it. And thanks for tagging each bird with its name
Wow, what a colourful treat, the hues of parakeets and travogon are just not leaving my mind's eye, why would anyone want to poach such regal birds is beyond my comprehension...
Kudos, keep up the good work
Good to see these visuals ,when we went there in 2013 the Sarahan Pheasantry was closed. We trekked all way up.
Thank you for the comment.
The tragopan is called "jewar" in Uttarakhand and "Sonalu" in Himachal. Both names suggest ornaments. In fact when I saw the tragopan, the first thought was "here is a diamond studded bird"!!
