    That first Hook and Ladder reminds me of Ladder Company 128 during the 60s to the early 70s when I was an Auxiliary Fire Captain in the FDNY Community Relations Bureau. The wooden Ladder was a kick wheel that sent to aerial Ladder flying upwards and you had to hand crank it down the to height that you wanted it to be at. We even had to hand crank the platform. We stood on the sides of the ladder and of course they had a big Bell in the Middle of the Ladder bay.
    My friend Lieutenant Carroll was assigned to Ladder Company 128 and was injured at a fire in Queens. He along with Lieutenant Poiholsky and Captain Fitzpatrick and Captain Horne with Battalion Chief Reynolds of the 35 Battalion taught me everything I needed to know about firefighting. I was detailed to Engine Company 207 and when Assistant Chief Kane was on duty I would ride with him and sit in the front of his car and operate the siren If I wasn't riding with him I would ride with The Super Pumper System on Satellite One or with the Satellite Officer in car 530 and operate the manifold at the scene of the fire.
    But I got drafted and opted out for the Navy. I eventually got my Masters Degree in Governmental Administration and Political Science. I still have my old fashioned Turn Out Gear and hip high boots that were Yellow with the CIVIL DEFENSE Emblem on the boots. My Yellow Helmet is still looking brand new and shiny with the Front Piece of two axes signifying the designation of Ladder Company Captain.
    You know that I really miss those days hanging on the back steps of the Engine Companies. We didn't have the Voice Alarm System and had to rely on counting out the Bells on the telegraph system. Multiple Alarm fires and the relocation signals with the special calling for additional units banging out over the Bells WOW HOW AWESOME IT WAS. I use to teach the Probies how to decode the Bells for example
    66-33-1326 is the signal for a THIRD ALARM FIRE IN THE BOROUGH OF MANHATTAN.
    17-26-128 is for The Relocation of a Ladder Company.
    15-309-55 is the relocation code for an Engine Company to relocate to the quarters of another Engine Company.
    66-7-1326-103 is the Special Call for Ladder Company 103 to respond to Manhattan Box 1326 which is the Third Alarm in Manhattan.
    Could you imagine having to count ALL OF THOSE BELLS in the Middle of the night in a residential neighborhood during the era when firehouses didn't have air conditioning and the doors were kept open?
    The thing about that was that the Bells came over a primary and secondary systems of Bells. First the Big Bell would sound off and then the smaller Bells would ring. During the WAR YEARS OF THE NEW YORK CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT those Bells were constantly going off. I remember Ladder Company 124 requesting a Second Alarm and the dispatcher said YOU'RE IT! Imagine a Ladder Company having a Second Alarm all to themselves and they don't have pumps for getting water on the Fire? Not to mention the limited amount of hose lines they had for using the Ladder pipe. We (the Auxiliaries were on Welfare Island which was the training School for the Fire Department. We had a 1952 Ward LaFrance 750 gmp Pumper and responded to assist Ladder Company 124 in The Bushwick Section of Brooklyn New York. Every other corner was a big fire! Brownsville and the Bronx resembled London during the BLITZ of The Second World War. Bushwick was getting close to looking like London during The Second World War Blitzkrieg.

    First of all, great video. You have to imagine the weather elements the firefighters face in those days in those open air trucks, especially the old tiller drivers . And some of those truck look like they can go right back in service.

    • @emergencyresponsevideosand4423
      @emergencyresponsevideosand4423 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, you are right there, some of them can go back in service. Infact so of those mack CF, internationals, and the tanker near the start are in service, but sadly. NFPA has standards. For carrear/paid fire departments. Trucks should be replaced every 15 or 20 years. For volunteer fire departments with the most money must replace the trucks every 20 years, and volunteer fire departments that barely have money is to replace a rig every 40 years depending on condition

    The best part is that a gross majority of these can still go to work. I mean, this kind of turnout isn’t necessarily for going to work, but the best kind of historic or even antique apparatus is its availability as backup equipment.

      Just skimming through the video again, I found at least two Emergency One Protector-series engines mounted on Ford cab-overs, likely from the 1970s. I found a Dodge M715 brush truck, at least two open-cab Seagrave engines, and at least two American LaFrance straight-truck ladders (ours was from 1971.)
      We also had, prior to the ALF ladder, an open-cab "long-nose" Pirsch tractor drawing a LaFrance 100ft aerial tiller-steered unit, dating from 1941.
      This was back in the early eighties.

      You stand there, observing the fire, nothing more you can do as your fire extinguisher has gone empty. Then, you feel it. The ground rumbles. The air becomes filled with the deafening roar of hundreds of fire trucks federal q screaming. Nothing seconds 4 city blocks around you are covered in hose lines and fire apparatus. Hundreds of firefighters close in from every side of the dumpster dragging hoseline. They all charge simultaneously, dumping thousands of gallons of water on the dumpster, drowning it. But they dont stop. They just keep going. Shouting for more water more water. Within minutes the city is under water. But the fire is out. And the day was saved
