Wow. Just wow. This guy's not a musician, he's a magician. What he can do with sound it nothing short of wizardry. One of the most underrated and brilliant composers EVER.
The thing I love about Dolby is that he's not only a master of the technology, but he brings in a great emotive quality with his melodies and impeccable lyrics.
i've been a fan since "the golden age...", but his best work are the deep cuts on his albums... if you listen beyond his hits, you will find dolby's music is very beautiful, very deep...
Pared down and minimal this song is still mesmerizing and beautiful - an emotional transport to another world. Thanks Thomas Dolby for creating worlds for us and taking us with you.
Came to the video all like "This'll be hilarious!" Then it started and I was just like, "Dayum this is tasty". Thank you Grumps of the Game for enlightening me of this awesome dude.
Love this rendition so much. I've lived in the metroplex all my life, thru all times of kinds. This song reminds me of constants on those deep twilight wanderings with local sounds to find solace in. This song reminds me of those blank sidewalks, uncertain resting spots, and big city light landscapes wreathed peacefully in the red light strobes of radio towers, either from windows of a strangers home or outside among nature.. providing a voice thru the nite, and music too. A bed of my own is a nice reward.
So I went Over The Falls In Barrel I Found The North Pole in a Field of Ice . And in a Land of Dreams I Found You ......... Wow Wow Great Music Makes Me Cry Thank You
Saw this at the Tupelo in 2006...so stoked as this is one of my top 5 fav TMDR songs. I relate to this song as in '92 I flew to a country I've never been before and married someone whom I never met face to face...and here we are 18 years later. Yes, it was awesome live!
seen the great man in a nightclub down bristol in 1983 fantastic even though he was sufferlng from a sore throat . what a professional. how many other artists would have gone on to the stage and still gave it 100% !
I've been rediscovering TD in a big way the last few months. What an amazingly brilliant guy. Can't wait to hear what he comes out with next now that he's working on a new album at last.
This show was cool. He would gradually 'build' his songs, and they slowly became recognizable as he progressed. Most of them I knew almost immediately, but he played some tricks on the audience, also. I hope he tours again. One of the best shows I have seen in awhile.
I agree with 01goldg1 comments. Thomas Dolby has many excellent songs to his credit that tell stories, like 'One of Our Submarines Is Missing' which is about his uncle. I love this song and 'I Scare Myself' is also one of my many favourites. Will have to get around to seeing him live.
boradis They said they found it on youtube again, and I checked out the rest of the videos to see if there were any huge differences. A little bit different instruments on the second result with the album cover, but that's all.
I know most people are going to come here out of curiosity from the Steam Train episode, but if you want to know the sad truth behind this track.... Thomas Dolby's bass player and close friend Terry Jackson was killed in a plane crash in 1991. Devastated by the news and trying to cope with this loss, Thomas left his house and ended up on a trail above the Griffith Observatory (in the Los Angeles hillside). As he sat watching the city below, there was a massive blackout that caused half of the city to lose power. The melody and the lyrics to this song came to him during this experience.
Our 80's band had the pleasure of opening for Thomas. Him and our producer traded shared for the Fairlight backstage, as we were setting up. Had a chance again to chat while doing this tour. Pleasant and gifted fellow. So sorry about his Bass player. We lost our bass player about that time too. Boating and dove into the lake to retrieve his son's hat. He came up once and went back down. I miss my old friend as I'm sure Thomas hasn't forgotten his either.
I just found Thomas Dolby on Twitter. He has recently re-released The Flat Earth and another cd with several rare or never heard tracks that was not on the original pressings.
There were times in late 80’s early 90’s when I wasn’t sure where TD ended and Prefab sprout started. His hand was pretty heavy on their albums, but I adore them equally. Steampunk yay.
This is one of those rare songs for me where the live version is better than the album version, saying that the album version is superb....this is exceptional though.
@tripero011 Ahhh a sharp ear! Now feast on the Visuals here is a "paste" from Thomas' site pertaining to this DVD. "The live DVD performance from Martyrs in Chicago, Spring 2006. This is the video footage of the audio found on The Sole Inhabitant live CD."
that happen to me at the times i had that song, i feel like, in a suit case, isolated, i woke up and things were very strange, lucky i have known people that pulled me from that quick-sand, the main one my LOVELY AND BEAUTIFUL MOTHER LULU
@ajittffcure that's the same I thought! He can be Melodic and should do more of these tracks, i love it! Depeche Mode did so, now they are one of the greatest of all time! ;)
Sadly so few people really know this Man's music. Most people think it all stops at "She Blinded Me...", even though that was only a "Cloudburst"! There is soo much poignant emotion interlaced in all his wonderful music. A true Musical Pioneer on the level of Eno, Fripp and Gabriel...IMO.
@brereton1113 I'm used to it. I would be disappointed because I think it's really good, but I'm used to it. One of my favorite David Bowie songs is "Never Let Me Down" and Bowie has said that he doesn't like that song at all.
Wow. Just wow. This guy's not a musician, he's a magician. What he can do with sound it nothing short of wizardry. One of the most underrated and brilliant composers EVER.
Absolutely love this Thomas. It is far my most played song in my car.
Had to get the CD from australia
This is Thomas's finest song. Absolutely beautiful and hypnotic. I will never ever tire of hearing it.

Pared down and minimal this song is still mesmerizing and beautiful - an emotional transport to another world. Thanks Thomas Dolby for creating worlds for us and taking us with you.

Maybe the guy at the Deviantart party *wasn't* the genius Thomas Dolby? Unbelievable!
boradis They said they found it on youtube again, and I checked out the rest of the videos to see if there were any huge differences. A little bit different instruments on the second result with the album cover, but that's all.

Thank you steam train!
Un autentico Genio👏👏👏
That Synth Bass sound is delicious.
Thomas is making new music these days. He was running his company BEATNIK, Inc, providing audio solutions for mobile devices. Amazing.
There were times in late 80’s early 90’s when I wasn’t sure where TD ended and Prefab sprout started. His hand was pretty heavy on their albums, but I adore them equally. Steampunk yay.
I see the other Grump fans found it too.

The dvd-versions are filmed at a Boston-concert. His voice is in better shape on the audiocd, recorded at Martyrs.. Savvy?
Jon come back ;_;
God Dammit, Ross...
Incoming game grumps references
STevie 2112 RUSH all the way to Thomas Dolby - throw in Bob Marley and some classical and that about sums up my musical neighborhood too. Cheers!!!
I wore out my "Golden Age of Wireless" album to the grooves (in the vinyl). Thank god for youtube.
@ajittffcure that's the same I thought! He can be Melodic and should do more of these tracks, i love it! Depeche Mode did so, now they are one of the greatest of all time! ;)
@BlueSilverStars
as i was reading this i thought...that sounds like something melody would say...and then.....:D
I like how the comments went from "1 year ago" to "12 hours ago". Because Grep.
Sadly so few people really know this Man's music. Most people think it all stops at "She Blinded Me...", even though that was only a "Cloudburst"! There is soo much poignant emotion interlaced in all his wonderful music. A true Musical Pioneer on the level of Eno, Fripp and Gabriel...IMO.
...and I still stand behind that statement!
Came here from Arin's story.
Oh my god... I think this guy lives in a suitcase.
Oh my god, I think this guy lives in a suitcase.
what fuckin plane of existence is this guy in? lol thanks grumps for showing me this weirdness
Changed how i danced and drove my car..
@brereton1113 I'm used to it. I would be disappointed because I think it's really good, but I'm used to it. One of my favorite David Bowie songs is "Never Let Me Down" and Bowie has said that he doesn't like that song at all.
