    Had a waiter at Lone Star Queenstown do this flawlessly a few years back. Took the food and drinks orders for a table of 9 where every single person had a change to the standard menu. He went and checked with the kitchen and then came back and confirmed our order going round the table repeating each person's order IN A DIFFERENT ORDER and did it perfectly. Man was a legend.

    • @junivanofdragonia
      @junivanofdragonia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      Trick was; the waiter went and checked with the kitchen (code for; waiter went back to write down the order, memorize it and came back to recite the order he had written down)
      Just messing. That waiter you had must’ve trained himself on memory tricks.

      I was the exact opposite, I would write down the orders, separated and numbered by guest then draw a small table diagram of where everyone was seated. Sometimes even decorated the numbers a bit with physical traits of the guest in question for easy recognition if they switched places.
      Never got an order wrong and would get unusually large tips because of it.
      Edit: It was an arab restaurant, arabs can be very generous tippers if you treat them right and unobtrusively. I also made an effort to learn the dish names in their arabic pronounciation.

      After all the waiter is not there to entertain the patrons and if you as a waiter go through the same challenge repeatedly because everybody thinks they are funny and it's all in good spirit, etc, it gets tiresome quickly.

    I've experienced this as a customer, was with a group of 14 and the waiter went to each person individually, then back around with changes, there were 3 kids too. Even with drink orders from a few of the folks, and food allergies, the guy knocked it out of the park, only coming back to clarify he had it right for the 2 people with allergies, I expect to give them more confidence. He got a hefty tip as he was also super attentive for refills/requests. Wasn't even a pricy restaurant.

    I did this back when I was a waiter, in college and it was a golden rule that even if you could memorize orders, always right it down just in case on tables of 4 and more. Even if you get it PERFECTLY, you will have a customer, who forgot to do something on their order, and instead of admitting they just forgot to tell you, they will say that they said it, but you forgot, and now they want their meal free....... UGH don't be a server, if you have plans to continue "liking" people in the future. After 3 years I would look at people with disgust.... Ask any other long term server to prove it is true.

After much back and forth she finally agreed to make the payment. I instantly knew that she was going to read her credit card details as fast as she possibly could, so that she could yell at me when I asked her to repeat it. However I was ready. I made sure I typed everything in quickly and correctly, so all I had to ask her at the end was if she wanted a confirmation number for her payment.

    One time I was at a diner with a big group of friends and our server didn’t have a notebook, yet he was able to get everybody’s orders right. Then, about a week later, a couple of people from our group went to the same diner for lunch and had that same waiter, and when they commented on his amazing memory he demonstrated his skills by repeating back the entire group’s order from the week previous. He even remembered where everyone had been sitting. We were a huge group; there were about 15 of us sitting in this one area of the diner.
    It was a long time ago, but I really hope that guy was able to do something amazing with his life because of his skills.

      @Albtraum_TDDC 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@EllionGrey it depends on the store.
      To keep the writing and paper use to a minimum what small stores do is write down the order and give that paper to the kitchen, who make the food and then give it to the cashier who makes the receipt.
      Or in more organized stores they do it differently.
      I work in a pizza PoS development so what they do in our program is they take the order directly on a tablet or a computer_station (though that is more for self-service) and when the order is finalized it gets sent automatically to the kitchen and the cashier.
      There's absolutely no reason for any server to memorize anything usually.
      But it does depend on how simple the menu is too.
      Also I guess if they don't have tablets (but still do more than self-service) and have to actually go back to the station to put in the order then they do have to write it down or memorize it.

    As a waiter myself, I wanna say this is so insanely accurate. I usually don’t have any issues taking orders for tables up 10 or so people (did 18 people once, but usually don’t wanna take chances like that).
    The main problem is when guests starts asking stuff like “you’re not gonna write it down?”. It really messes up my rhythm. And it’s frankly quite insulting to question someone’s ability to do their job like that.
    That said, I always carry a notepad incase I feel the orders are getting too much with tonnes of additions and allergies and stuff. Especially allergies, because that shit is NEVER ok to mess up.

      You can guarantee all you want, but since you don’t know me and most likely live in a different country, with different restaurant culture (not to mention there can even be big differences between the clientele in neighbouring restaurants), I’m gonna go ahead and trust my own memories instead of random stranger on the internet.
      You are making deductions based on own experiences to make worldwide generalisations. Example: If your whole life, you only see white swans, you can say for certain that white swans exist. You can not, however, say that every swan is white, because suddenly you find yourself in Australia and looking straight at some black swans.
      However, I will concede that my original comment could have used the addition of “accurate in MY experience”, just so it doesn’t seem like I’m saying that every waiter on the planet goes through this. I obviously don’t believe that to be the case.

    Where they're standing straight and looking up...a tad over their head so it LOOKS like they're paying attention. But not. So when people gesture for them. NOPE'

    This actually happened to a group of us while pheasant hunting. Come lunch, we and practically every other hunter went to this bar and grill in the middle of nowhere. Only one waitress, and I'm pretty sure the people in the back were goblins. Anyway, there were eight of us, and we all gave her our orders. She didn't write any of them down. My dad asked her three times if she wanted to write them down, and that we could repeat them. She said no, she got it. She clearly didn't. Between being the only waitress and trying to memorize orders for several different tables, I'm surprised she didn't hulk smash something. Our food came out, and absolutely none of the orders were right. Not even close. We didn't go back there to eat.

      The part of the story you didn't get was that she was trying to get fired, so she didn't need to write it down because she WANTED to get it wrong so people would complain. That's the head canon I have come up with for your story, in any case.

    I was in a restaurant where a proud employee memorized the orders, we asked if everything was ok and if it wasn't better to point and he said very confident that there was no problem... the whole service was wrong and he kept coming back to ask about the order , always confident and never admitting that he couldn't do it that way 🤣

    To be honest, as long as nobody changes their order mid-ordering, it's actually quite easy to remember even large tables, the issue comes when you have to mentally delete what that person said before hand, and replace it with something else
