Lyrics:
Yeah, I'm losing my edge
I'm losing my edge
The kids are coming up from behind
I'm losing my edge
I'm losing my edge to the kids from France and from London
But I was there
I was there in 1968
I was there at the first Can show in Cologne
I'm losing my edge
I'm losing my edge to the kids whose footsteps I hear when they get on the decks
I'm losing my edge to the Internet seekers who can tell me every member of every good group from 1962 to 1978
I'm losing my edge
To all the kids in Tokyo and Berlin
I'm losing my edge to the art-school Brooklynites in little jackets and borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered Eighties
But I'm losing my edge
I'm losing my edge, but I was there
I was there
But I was there
I'm losing my edge
I'm losing my edge
I can hear the footsteps every night on the decks
But I was there
I was there in 1974 at the first Suicide practices in a loft in New York City
I was working on the organ sounds with much patience
I was there when Captain Beefheart started up his first band
I told him, "Don't do it that way. You'll never make a dime."
I was there
I was the first guy playing Daft Punk to the rock kids
I played it at CBGB's
Everybody thought I was crazy
We all know
I was there
I was there
I've never been wrong
I used to work in the record store
I had everything before anyone
I was there in the Paradise Garage DJ booth with Larry Levan
I was there in Jamaica during the great sound clashes
I woke up naked on the beach in Ibiza in 1988
But I'm losing my edge
To better-looking people
With better ideas and more talent
And they're actually really, really nice
I'm losing my edge
I heard you have a compilation of every good song ever done by anybody. Every great song by the Peech Boys. All the underground hits. All the Modern Lovers tracks. I heard you have a vinyl of every Niagara record on German import. I heard that you have a white label of every seminal Detroit techno hit - 1985, '86, '87. I heard that you have a CD compilation of every good '60s cut and another box set from the '70s
I hear you're buying a synthesizer and an arpeggiator and are throwing your computer out the window because you want to make something real. You want to make a Yaz record
I hear that you and your band have sold your guitars and bought turntables
I hear that you and your band have sold your turntables and bought guitars
I hear everybody that you know is more relevant than everybody that I know
But have you seen my records? This Heat, Pere Ubu, Outsiders, Nation of Ulysses, Mars, The Trojans, The Black Dice, Todd Terry, The Germs, Section 25, Althea and Donna, Sexual Harrassment, a-ha, Pere Ubu, Dorothy Ashby, PIL, Fania All-Stars, The Bar-Kays, The Human League, The Normal, Lou Reed, Scott Walker, Monks, Niagara, Joy Division, Laurent Garnier, The Creation, Sun Ra, Scientists, Royal Trux, 10cc, Rammellzee, Eric B. and Rakim, Index, Basic Channel, Soulsonic Force (just hit me!), Juan Atkins, Manuel Göttsching, David Axelrod, Electric Prunes, Gil! Scott! Heron!, The Slits, Faust, Mantronix, Pharoah Sanders and The Fire Engines, The Swans, the Soft Cell, The Sonics, The Sonics, The Sonics, The Sonics
You don't know what you really want [x15]
(Okay, stop)

I heard this song on the radio, and then looked for "The Talking Heads - Losing My Edge" for like two solid hours.
hehe
Lol why though
Their sounds are similar
Yup, they are heavily influenced by Talking Heads, especially the percussion section. One of the reasons I enjoy the hell out of LCD.
@@ZBR_ProXP listen to their album Speaking in Tongues, definitely had an influence on LCD's rock/dance sound
When Murphy was showing this to friends before he released it as the first LCD LP, they universally told him it was bad, in fact they said they believed he would embarrass himself by releasing it. Good thing he didn't listen to them! Sometimes its OK to trust your own judgment in the face of overwhelming negativity.

I was there...literally. When this video was shot with old tube cameras from Technisphere Corp and shot in a day on the west side of Manhattan near Lincoln Center. This wasn't even the video we really shot - just James' idea he had on the side to do a one take thing. My job was to capture all the analog video from the old tube cameras.
that's awesome!! are you still working on music videos?
The fakeout at 4:06 killed me. hahahaha
And they're actually, uuuh, really really nice
I missed that line! Even after dozens of listens... Thank you!
Well, they are. You just gotta give kids a chance.
BUT HAVE YOU SEEN MY RECORDS?!
So I plan to watch this when i'm not really stoned, but i'm pretty sure THIS is the ultimate form that art can achieve.
4 Times in a row. Still hasn't lost it's edge.
Must be good weed.
what do you think about this 4 years later?
I completely agree - an intersection of art and life.

You watch this with half your face and around the world with the other

What a brilliant interactive addition to this great song!
I don't know why this is so funny or fun to do...but ive now told all my friends to try this when they're bored...this song is now more entertaining than it was before
You are actually a genius.
Ballet Roses So fun!
This is true of a lot of roles and professions in the digital age. I've talked to lawyers who say back before the internet was so popular they had more prestige because nobody had all this casual access to legal information through the internet. People still need lawyers now for sure and lawyers still have way more specialized knowledge but clients can nowadays just look up the basics of building regulations or divorce laws themselves in five minutes. Before you had to master a bunch of lawbooks in some impressive wood-paneled room to know anything and the normies would have to genuflect to you. In a way that's the same story as the hipster who travelled from concert to concert and assembled a magnificent record collection after scouring record stores (high fidelity style) now being unseated by kids with computers that Murphy is talking about, for better or worse. There were more information bottlenecks so being a gatekeeper was more prestigious and mastering information was a lot more work so the former masters feel understandably betrayed when their task becomes a lot easier and the romance goes out of it (a physical adventure of searching for truth or art amid old archives, wise elders and special venues becomes a matter of clicking on a screen in a comfy chair) , even if its probably for the best for all of us.
awesome comment
This video is such a classic but also there's so many fucking great comments on it!
It’s not for the best… take a look around.
Wow. Yeah…
Yeah but not even. computers are kind of replaced lawyers just as effectively if not more than they replace truck drivers. It will be harder to add value without creating it. You can't just sift through CD cases and some stinky store and find out who's in what band and go to shoes to make connections
Beck: have two turntables and the microphone
James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem: sold turntables

Slap #49 was my absolute favorite.
Why?
reighfried36952 because #34 was kinda sloppy.
I'm 99.9% sure you're just joking with us...but I'm probably gonna sit here and count the slaps anyhow. Touche`.
Idk if you planned this but all the slaps come at a certain time but at 49 it doesn't come and the subtly cut to a closet angle at his face then resume back to normal. Then the actual 49th slap comes but is quite ordinary.
Slap #49 is just too mainstream for me.
Still relevant. Never gets old.
Irony
That band he refers to at 0:57 is Can. One of the most influential bands from Germany in history. Along with Kraftwerk and Neu! They had a lot of influence on rock, electronica and even hip hop.
RIP Damo Suzuki. I was supposed to see him in 2020 but then covid happened.
@DrewberTravels I love krautrock and I would have loved to go see it.
I've felt this way every day for 20 years.
no kidding.
As a millennial who's having a really hard time struggling to find a career I find this extremely relatable.

I'm liking my mom's favorite songs more than mine. I'm losing my edge.
The best lyrics on the pop culture ever. Kids are coming from behind and they've already won the race you think you're still in. To be relevant, be young (and don't even act like you're staying young) ! This first hit of LCD had its last will inside : we are a swan song band. Burn out ! (it's better). But what luxurious gems Mr Murphy gave us before he closed his wonderful soundsystem !

I love LCD's videos, almost as mental as their music is brilliant.
By my count, that's 113 slaps!
Good counting!
What a chance! It's not the long version!
do you know if they actually slapped him?
All these old comments lamenting that they could not see LCD before they broke up.
I just saw them some weeks ago. They played this song. I was there.
It's kind of breathtaking that a self-deprecating, browbeatingly humorous song about a guy discussing his influences and/or cred in order to mock the status competition rituals of "who was first" still manages to set off heated, irony-proof debates about who was first. Though that's pretty funny too
Great music, magnificent art.
I saw everything you ever saw and saw it before you.. and on so much deeper a level and so much more profundly
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that this song was just music critic masturbation material.
That's kind of the point.

But you just did?
How short?
Who cares, the song is shit.

If you are lucky enough to have this as your soundtrack.
...you don't need anymore luck...
I love the modern lovers because of this track - thanks Jimmy. I know you’re reading this.
This song has a great background story which made me enjoy it even more. In an interview, James Murphy said the following:
“When I was DJing, playing Can, Liquid Liquid, ESG, all that kind of stuff, I became kind of cool for a moment, which was a total anomaly. And when I heard other DJs playing similar music I was like: ‘Fuck! I’m out of a job! These are my records!’ But it
was like someone had crept into my brain and said all these words that I hate.
Did I make the records? Did I fuck! So, I started becoming horrified by my own
attitude. I had this moment of glory though. People would use me to DJ just to
get them cool. They’d be like ‘It’s the cool rock disco guy’ and this was really
weird. And to be honest I was afraid that this new found coolness was going to
go away and that’s where ‘Losing My Edge’ comes from. It is about being
horrified by my own silliness. And then it became a wider thing about people who
grip onto other people’s creations like they are their own. There is a lot of
pathos in that character though because it’s born out of inadequacy and love.”

01:46 - But I am losing my edge to better looking people with better ideas and more talent...
That lyric speaks to me on a personal level. xo
"But actually, they're really, really nice."
This song makes fun of people who are like this btw
@Themonkeymartin
at this time in James' career, he felt like he was on the way out of the music industry (... Then he released this song). He is referring to the younger generation of musicians. He actually felt like that. Even worse they were really, really nice as well.
droolthefool At this point he didn't even have a career. This was literally his first public single
@Themonkeymartin he's been in the music scene since the beginning/mid 90's... then he started LCD and they blew up... anyways the point is he is not "making fun of people like this" btw
One of the coolest videos ever
Even though the song doesn't gain momentum for a good minute and a half, his lyrics more then keep my attention. Fantastic song

I've loved this song for years never realizing there is an amazing video to back it up. Fucking awesome, Fucking awesome, Fucking awesome!!
well i've never listened to this band before or heard anything about them but this is pretty dang nice.
It's about how modern day 'kids' have huge access to all music now thanks to the internet. He was saying he collected all his stuff in physical form e.g records ( he even worked in a record store) Now today he feels he has lost his relevance to them - things changing so rapidly with technology thus 'losing my edge'
+Amber Haynes Best explanation I've read so far.
Thank you Marite :)
+Amber Haynes He is saying that but at the same time he's making fun of himself for believing he's such an elitist knowitall. He's condemning both sides but I would say he's condemning himself more than anything.
I agree with that interpretation he's basically saying he was the elitist know it all- but the new age has come about so he's ;lost' his edge.
(The new age being kids of the technology age)
I was there when Captain Beefheart started up his first band
I told him, "Don't do it that way. You'll never make a dime."
