You can see Murray is fighting to hold back the tears here, especially at 0:53. I miss the commentary from Walker and Hunt, and the old days of F1, but time never stops moving on I suppose.

Lately, I've been reviewing the early 1990s, and just this week I have come upon the BBC coverage of the 1993 French GP at Magny-Cours, where James' commentary is conspicuous by its absence. You see, although I am an F1 fan, I prefer to view races of the past over today's glitzy product offering, and have a special fondness for the races of the 1990s, which always featured commentary by Murray and James, until his untimely death after the 1993 Canadian Grand Prix. Of course, James is with us via his work for the BBC. Here on TH-cam you can find collections of Hunt's wit and wisdom from those years, and you'd be well entertained hearing his unique style of commentary. James was a one-off, and is still missed by those of us who enjoyed his broadcasts after his retirement from racing in 1979. He worked beside Murray Walker all of those years, from 1980 until that spring of 1993. Those great races, which featured racing legends like Gilles Villeneuve, Lauda, Piquet, Mansell, Prost, and Senna, are still available here and the Internet Archive. While many of these recordings are far below the broadcast quality of today's HDTV, they are still immensely enjoyable for so many reasons -- not the least being the great insight and humour of James Hunt.

he lived hard, yes the way he drove his formula I racing car, but did it the way he wanted it. and when you do that, it's not a waste to go at 45 in your sleep, but a blessing. Better 45 great years, then 80 years of nothing

That's to say that he only had two options; a quiet life or the life he actually lead. I'm quite sure he could still have been an F1 world champion, a superb commentator, a massive hit with the ladies and still enjoyed a drink (and more) while not quite reaching the excesses of the latter. It's easy to be critical, so I am not going to be. We learn from experience and we all feel invincible when we're young. He did a lot to clean up his health but sadly for all of us it was just a little too late. A great shame; he was a legend.

The greatest Commentary duo in the history of sport. Hunt knew how to get the best from Murray, and vice-versa. And this tribute from Walker proves, that he absolutely loved James, and the feeling was mutual.

James Hunt was the Christopher Hitchens of sport commentary. He called it how he saw it and was so often spot on... doing it with wit and style. Nobody could roast a grand prix driver like he did. The things he got away with was because he was James Hunt. He didn't give a fuck and knew what he was talking about. That's why people loved him. A champ in a grand prix car and a champ in the commentary box. Companies today would never allow someone like that to have a mic. Murray and him were the very best during the best era of F1. RIP
