      Freewell hands down. The Polar Pro is strong in branding and marketing but not worth it comparatively speaking. And Moment has been kinda disappointing the last 4 months or so I’m a little out on them for now.

    Excellent comparison video. Really appreciate your production. You got me to swing to Freewell. To minimize the cross polarization / vignetting effect, does it make sense to get the larger size filter and step up in effort to use sweet center portion of filter, or just to get exact size to fit lens whenever possible?

    Great video man! I was stuck deciding wether to choose the PolarPro V2 or the Moment and didn't even know about the Freewell.
    I do mainly video over photo so my end plan it to pickup a PolarPro Basecamp system, I therefore in the meantime didn't want to spend TOO much on screw on filters, only to end up barely using them in the longer term. You've made my decision very easy, Freewell 6-9 in an 82mm and some step-up rings should do me just fine until I can afford that sweet Basecamp System!
    Keep up the great content man!

The reason why I'm so for the Moment VND is because Aesthetic mainly, haha. • @shawn5210
    @shawn5210 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The polar pro 6-9 was clearly the best as long as you are not going super wide. Colour shift was almost zero. So if you need that much (high iso log shooting) probably best to go for that.

  • @cryora
    @cryora 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Variable ND filters basically work make making the polarization angle between each glass piece more and more cross, but those dark spots appear because the polarization direction does not remain uniform throughout the glass, probably due to limits in the tolerance of the manufacturing.

      @@dunnadidit This was my thought as well. Even when shooting neutral on the A7III I notice a slight green cast that always needs to be corrected. I was actually wondering if the cast from any of the VND's would correct the skin tones in camera. I currently use breakthrough photography filters, who don't make a VND last I checked.

    Hi, thanks for this great comparison. I really adore the magnetic cap from freewell. The price is also great. My issue is that the range i would like is around 4-8 stops for outdoor. • @therealsbdunks
    @therealsbdunks 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    These are all relatively expensive filters and I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them.
    If I had an unlimited budget and was a more experienced videographer, I’d definitely go with the Polarpro or most expensive option. I think the benefit of going with the most expensive (and best) option is you don’t have any second doubts or worries after you purchase them with the amount of thought, features and approval behind the PM edition filters. Almost like a “set it and forget it” mentality.
    But on the other hand, I think if you’re very limited in budget and you’re only using the kit lens on your camera-there’s nothing wrong about going with a $25-50 filter as that filter will marginally improve your shots with minimum investment. A win-win situation.
    As for me, I’m planning to start my own channel and having just purchased a mirrorless (m50) let alone my first camera I went with the Freewell NDs to pair with my new Sigma lens. Price point and quality all checked out from the very little and early reviews. After using the filter for a month that purchase did not disappoint. I like to keep my aperture at the lowest and this just does that without noticeable lost in image quality. Very happy with these even though it doesn’t have the “coolness” factor nor the endorsement of PM, which says a lot about the bang for your buck that you get with these.

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that there is a limit to that though. I’ve had some cheap VNDs before and they actually made my image worse. Color shift, vignetting, cross polarization etc. so sometimes going with the cheap option might actually hurt you more than waiting. Luckily, the freewells are super high quality and not expensive at all in the grand scheme of variable Nd filters.

    Hi! So it looks like the cross polarization is pretty big problem for wide angle lenses and variable ND filters in general. If we wanted to use a wide angle lens with an ND filter, should we get a fixed ND filter then? I'm definitely leaning towards the Freewell ND filters, but wondering if should just get the freewell magnetic fixed filters to avoid this problem if we want to vlog on the wide lenses.

    Do you know if the color cast caused by a VND varies with the number of stops? In other words, is the color cast the same at 2 Stops as it is at 5 stops. If so, I could create a node in Davinci Resolve to offset the cast for a specific ND filter and simply use it every time. However, if the cast changes depending upon the number of stops then the benefits of such a node would be less.

    Hey. Would it make a difference to set the white balance AFTER putting on the filter in terms of the color cast? Could this mitigate the effects of the Moment or Freewell filters?

      YES! Always do this if you can! The only reason I didn’t in the video is just to show the color cast. But you definitely want to fix your white balance before you shoot

  • @billiards0518
    @billiards0518 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    As someone who does manufacturing, I can say without any hesitation, a not so insignificant part of the cost of the PolarPro is that packaging. Geez! Put it in a much more simple box and charge people less. Sure, the packaging needs to convey a sense of quality. But, I really believe some manufacturers are going overboard in an effort to placate "box snobs".
    And for those of you "box snobs" that like all the superfluous foil-embossed world map graphics on the box, yeah. That'll get you better photos and videos.

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately the wide angle lenses that I have need step rings in order to test the filters on. That said, using step rings is a pretty real life situation anyway so the tests are still quite useful. Generally, step rings will only introduce vignetting as an issue, but in this case, none of the lenses suffered from severe vignetting with the filters so I don’t think the step rings were causing problems anyway.

    The moment VND is designed specifically to allow you to use your lens cap - that's why it's so big. Works perfectly with my cap for my Canon 24-70 f2.8. I have the moment 2-5 stop, and the picture quality is GREAT. They boast no vignetting down to a 16 mm focal length, but I don't have a wide enough lens to prove of explore that. The case is cool, but it is pretty annoying to have to unscrew every time. Great review man!

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Oh interesting! Testing now...Okay, I see this. Thats kind of neat! I'll make a little update in the description! Thanks for sharing. I agree that the quality is good, I didn't see any vignetting on any of these filters down at 17mm but the cross polarization is a real problem on all of them still. If it weren't for the freewell filters being even less expensive and better performing, I'd probably be more inclined so suggest the moment filters to people looking for a cheaper option than the polarpro.

      Freewell is killing it with all their filters. I've got (and recommend) the 2-5vnd, 6-9vnd, cpl, and light pollution. If they had taken out mist-like filters before Moment did their Cinebloom, I would've probably gotten those too.
