My Pelican (first run) had a terrible lockup, it was basically a slipjoint. Actually it was worse than a slipjoint because there's no spring tension. I left it on a bridge for someone to find.
@@Tenskwatawa4U I do it all the time. It's a nice alternative to selling or gifting a knife and since it's free and on the street, no one cares that it's not perfect.
david marshall I usually give Blade’s like that to random people who either have a crap knife in there pocket or look like they would carry it but I make sure it’s safe to still use as a knife. I would leave them in random places but my luck it would either be found by a young kid or a serial killer
I like mine. The only negative for me is detente is a little strong to flick open but that may change over time. Blade grind and sharpening was very good. Surprisingly sharp out of the box. Also the pivot screw is loctited so will be difficult to open and adjust. Really like it.
I like how compared to other budget 3” folders it has thick liners. Overall that alone makes for a longer tasting knife. Their D2 is pretty hard so sharpening for a decade shouldn’t be an issue even for a hard user.. I mean for $35 to get all that and Micarta scales. Makes a perfect gift knife or work knife that looks way cool.
I got the black micarta when it first came out and carried it and used daily for about six months. I only honed the blade a few times and it’s still razor sharp. Looks brand new. Sending it to my cousin for a new EDC he broke the tip on his old Endura. The Penguin is the coolest and nicest looking GOOD $35 budget blade out there. QSP, Civivi and Kizer all do killer blade grinds, always perfect.
Pretty cool. Didn’t realize it was more of a compact knife like that. I love companies starting to attempt micarta more as well. I like it! Thanks Enjoy
Thanks for the review. I have this knife and I agree with your assessment, substantially. But I found that the thumbstuds were slightly too big. Sometimes they catch on the edge of the pocket when I'm taking it out. The cutting edge is right in line with the grip portion of the handle, but I'd have liked to see it extend just a few mm below, slightly more like a cleaver -- which would have given better access to the whole of the edge when cutting on a flat surface. I think they could have done that without having to make the handle any deeper. Other than that, very happy.
Part of me agrees with you on wanting a slight offset of the edge in relation to the handle, but the other part of me likes the precision it offers on draw cuts. I picked up a D2/denim micarta penguin when they dropped and ended up using it a LOT when cutting leather for strops and a pair of knife slips that I made as gifts for family/friends. I could see them using the same general design for the blade & handle but a slightly different total package along the lines of the CJRB Tigris.
I really don't understand why more companies are not using AUS-10. Other than Cold Steel, it's rare when I see a new folder pop up in AUS-10. It's enough of an improvement over AUS-8 where it should appeal to more than just the budget target audience and, from what I've seen/heard from makers, it doesn't add significantly to the cost & difficulty of manufacturing.
paddys potato peelers the action on mine has gotten even smoother after this video because I took it apart cleaned all the grim and stick oil they had in it now it free drops on its own weight 👌🏻
That might be good for days I carry a victorinox. I like to carry a sheepsfoot for opening/cutting (utility type tasks) things along with another knife. Been carrying a old timer landshark slipjoint which has sheepsfoot in pocket along with a drop point blade clipped on pocket. Just ordered one in denim from bladehq for $29.66
Ordered the blue denim micarta version. Needed a good, inexpensive knife while I'm waiting for my Artisan cutlery centauri to get to me. For $27.84, it looks tough to beat. Good review, thanks.
J Eo sorry,water doesn’t help , I was blown up in a chemical plant explosion and my throat was damaged so it just gets irritated, I’ve had a surgery but it only helped a little

My Jean Micarta Penguin came in yesterday. I had to snatch one up as well when I saw Micarta, D2, and Copper washer pivots for 30 bucks. That's a lot of knife for the price and Not a Chinese knockoff of another design. Hopefully, the D2 doesn't chip when sharping as someone posted on BladeHQ on the other version.

Great looking knife and a great price definitely looks to be a workhorse with that wharncliff blade think I may pick one of these up
