I had a lot of trouble with my sailboat water tanks when I first bought it. There was an access port in the top of the tank and once I took that round lid off and looked into the tank I was shocked. There was scum on all sides of the fiberglass tank, and actual jellies of some sort growing in there. It took years of using only reverse osmosis water to get it totally clean. I used a bit of bleach every time I filled it and a Brita to get rid of any orders. I never in ten years drank water straight out of the tank. I was hoping this video would give a bit more for older boats but I will just have to deal with whatever I get in my new boat.

Wow that sounds awful. Yeah you really have to clean it every season & use it often - sitting water is bad. That said, we never drink our tank water anyway.

I stopped putting the pink antifreeze in mine, rather I use an air compressor to blow out the lines to winterize. During the season we empty the tank before we leave the boat, which has helped with odor.

Adding pink is not that big of a deal for us & piece of mind it’s done right. A good cleaning & rinse through beginning of season is usually all we need.

@@MyBoatLife agreed to peace of mind, and I go back and forth on whether I should put pink in it, and usually end up putting some in to feel good. Like you we don't use the fresh water for drinking.

This is great if you’re not drinking it (as you say). If you are drinking it, which we do, you would also want a drinking water safe hose…

Yes we have a dedicated hose at the dock for city water coming into our boat with a filter before it enters our boat - typically we use our holding tank out on hook - it gets refreshed a lot so it’s not terrible, but don’t drink it.

Using raw lake water mmm not a good idea.

    • @MyBoatLife

No that wouldn’t be a good idea- we fill from our marina & it also goes through the filter before it goes into holding tank so that helps too
