    Some of the Scan Eagle guys were on our base at Ripley and Cole in Tarin Kowt , Afghanistan. Good guys. Know they did good job and provided good intel to SF. One guy was real tall from Azle, TX down the road from me. Can't remember his name. We used to flick crap at each other a lot. Hope they are all safe.

      Seems rather pricey. It looks not much different than a model/hobby drone. I'm sure it is, and I'm sure it's got good optics, but I can't see why it is so expensive, it nearly costs its weight in gold. The case it comes in is cool too the way it lifts up so you can assemble it.

    We had a pneumatic launcher that we wanted to test and we decided the a variable load weight would give us practice in launching different UAVs. We used pumpkins. Surprised they held together during launch but the landing was predictable.

    • @darkhollowhomestead9088
      @darkhollowhomestead9088 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not quite a rotary saw, more of a pneumatic impact or drill.
      If they start it manually (being a gas engine) this doesn’t require a quite heavy battery and starter, by winding up to speed a petrol engine if the ignition circuit is closed you can actually cause it to achieve combustion (similar to how a model t started or even a lot of modern prop planes).
      I’m sure it still has a good battery, but it wouldn’t need to be a large one capable of starting an engine

    Back in the day, was an Army drone control systems tech in W. Germany, in build-up reaction to Cuban Missile Crisis. Was first-generation transistorized circuitry. Used JATO launching from simple folding rack. Surveillance drones were flying camera platforms, no video. Recovery used parachute deployment which switched-off engine. Photo techs then retrieved camera and film canister. Small remote control console on portable stand was for line-of-sight, but accompanying radar trailer was guidance for low-visibility and over-local-horizon control...again, no video. Drone was about 12-ft.+ in length, about same wing span, front prop, loud gas engine. JATO launching was telltale, could give away location far easier than new pneumatic launch technique. Sixty years of change and much better.

      Its more like 16 hours if it carries a payload and yes, the altitude at which it flies also affects its time in the air quite a lot. The higher it flies, the thinner the air, the more fuel it will burn to keep it in the air. Still an amazing looking machine though.

    The "landing" system is ridiculous.

    • @austntexan
      @austntexan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Why? Insitu originally designed the ScanEagle to track Tuna for fishmen at sea. The aircraft is literally arrested out of the sky without damaging the airframe or its payload. This can be done on a ship at sea or anywhere. How would you improve upon this?

      BaboonwithaHarpoon Alex Stark It's not really a VTOL aircraft and wasn't designed for that sort of application at all. This is primarily ISR and does long range one with a fuel tank about the size of 2 venti coffees. To run a VTOL setup would essentially be a different design and likely have different mission capabilities. VTOLs aren't known to be efficient.

      They entered service 16 years ago, a group of engineering graduate students could design and build a better drone than this, so China or any nation really wouldn't be interested in these.
