The words for mermaid and doll are very similar! Mermaid is 人魚（にんぎょ ningyo) while doll is 人形（にんぎょう ningyou）! Doll has an extra 'u' on the end! Although of course it can be difficult to tell the difference when you're just listening.

The 'nin' (人) part of both word's kanji literally means human or person, and so the 'gyo' part in ningyo (魚) is a fish (meaning mermaid is just a "human fish") while the 'gyou' part in ningyou (形) means 'shape' (so a doll is literally a "human shape" - a little creepy, thanks Japanese) - however the way the kanji are read is probably based off a mix Chinese influences and old Japanese language so it's most likely pure coincidence that they sound similar!
