1) Fully variegated plants won't survive as they produce no chlorophyll and can't support themselves long. 2) Meristems are located at the apex / axiliary buds ; ZZ shoots are just leaves and contain no merstem tissue. All parts of the ZZ leaf are able to differentiate into a meristem, however. 3) What you were showing was not a petiole. The petiole of a ZZ leaf is the stemlike structure above ground. The stem is below ground.
Wow 😮 thanks again, Summer Rayne. My ZZ🌿 was starting to turn light green too, wasn't sure what to do. He is dear to my heart because he is the second plant I brought, that's now a part of my many other love plant families. So I will try to do the same as you, wish me luck plant 🌿family. 💐
hi. thx shonda. i too bought 2 plants- 1 zz, and 1 snake. they did great for a bunch of years. they did so well i decided to divide the zz. it was early spring. too early. i bought home depot/miracle grow potting soil. i nearly lost my beautiful zz. i should have let it gro and bust out of its pot til summer. the new soil must have been infected, or bad. it nearly died - many people said it was probably scale. i did many many things to keep it alive. it is still alive! it got very leggy. the stalks are all firm not soggy. leaves are big and shiny. And.... the best part is there is a New shoot or flower that has grown to almost 4 inches out of the root ball! i don't think it's a flower. it's bright and iridescent green- very nice.i have not seen any other new growth. just this one subsoil bud?? all leaves are bigger and healthy looking. i thought i lost her. Good luck to you!! By the way- do zz plants go dormant? i did not consider that. actually i'm certain it was sick. jay m. - HPMC GRADUATE chicago il.
I found one in the garbage and let it die along with a full green one and it just grew inside the bag where I found it and now I want it to live.. so I’m potting it up to see if it’ll survive it grew a Bout a foot in a half and started yellowing so we’ll see.. I’ll try the propagating as well today. Thanks for ALL YOUR VIDEOS I learn so much! Would love to visit fingerlake one day I live upstate as well. Blessings Summer!
I was quite surprised how quickly my ZZ Raven leaf cuttings rooted in pon watered with a rhizotonic solution, I checked after 5 weeks how they were doing and both had roots and tubers. Wishing your cool looking ZZ roots successfully for you.
My zz took a year to propigate and show new growth. They made a tiny "potato" within 3 months. The new growth emerged in about a year. Patience for these.
You are my inspiration to start the channel & I have 60+ videos now, I think its a good start & it's been a year now. Looking forward hearing from you. Love you a lot !!
I was able to get a variegated zz plant. It really is a beautiful plant. I’m afraid to propagated just yet because it’s only 2 shoots. But eventually I will try to propagate a few leaves.
Semi water (perlite + water) works really well! Add a pothos cutting to speed up rooting (within 3 months). Water prop doesn't need callousing for sure. Not sure how long yellows will take tho.
Nice, but you have to be so patient. My leaflets grew a bulby root in several months, and a new leaf only after 2 years. Two out of three leaflets survived to grow new plants, but they were not yellow. Good luck!
Can't wait to see the update. I love his raven zz plant. Just picked one up and I'm in love with it 🥰 I'm already propagating a few branches and leaves, you already know it lol 😁 Thanks for sharing Summer. It's always such a pleasure seeing what your up to. Trial and error is the way to go.. I'm never afraid to go for something that looks impossible. Nature always surprises me.. I love our outfit btw😉 Have a great one!
Hi summer I’m your biggest Fan! I’m also from Pakistan and love gardening and your Chanel. Please some day make lemon bonsai I have failed many times to make lemon bonsai
I propagated my black zz in leca and the growth was insane! I lost a few leaves but I had 3 out the 6 I cut. Now I’ll put them in soil with the mother plant!
Hello Summer! 👋 I propagated the hell out of my zz - both via leaf and stem propagation and both in water and soil. I had success in all ways. Also propagated a smaller raven tip cutting in soil. It's rooted, but definitely slower than the green ones. 😊
Hi Summer! This was very interesting because I've never heard of a variegated ZZ, let alone seen one. It will be interesting to see how the propagating experiment turns out. Thank you so much for sharing!
Hi, congratulation for variegated zizi, I know why most variegated leafs got brown , that is due to light , you must keep it in a corner where lowest light is and just yellow leafs difficult to propagate because of no chlorophyl best to keep the variegated branch with mother plant that is green
Mine is doing this as well!! Im nervous that it will eventually die off because of the lack of chlorophyll. This video encouraged me to propagate the green/yellow mixed leaves this morning which I’ve held off for years!
Variegated ZZs are my favorites.. i already have that fully yellow variety and the raven... the yellow leaves burn easily especially with the harsh tropical sun.. i make sure they only get filtered light.. tried propagating thru leaf cutting, but i found that propagating thru separating the full stems , with the bulbs on, worked better...
Oh, Summer! This video is 3 days too late for me. I had 2 stems of those yellow/ cream that sprouted from my regular ZZ. One was almost a month old so some of the leaves were brown already. Decided to cut if off & accidentaly hit the other one which leaves are still small & neon yellow and both ended shredded & thrown to the compost pile. Kept thinking they'd turn green eventually & when the leaves turned brown, i thought I may be doing something wrong with it.

This is so helpful. My zz are shooting more stems with yellow leaves.I felt so bad because I cut the stems because I thought it was rotting. Thanks for sharing this info.
they take forever but mine took about 4 weeks to root, i found that leca helped a lot because it kept the end of the leaf moist so it could uptake water, but avoided having half the leaft submerged. for hers i'd recommend coconut coir or sphagnum moss (i lean towards sphagnum moss) as it has anti microbial and fungal properties.
I put my zz on the screen porch for the summer. This is my first plant and I thought it could tolerate the heat. In Texas where i live it gets quite hot in summer. It did fine till late June when it started getting in the 90s, and it put out bright yellow pups, like yours. The stem grew like yours then died once the leaves it started turning brown. I attribute it to the heat. Idk. What I do know is once I brought it inside the yellow pups stopped coming up.
If put in sealed area on west before bunch of leaves it was very moist the heat of the sun made an eco system making it go thru dry and wet cycles, and now i have like 7 ZZ plants, if tryit with a black ZZ instead of green one, and was less succesfull tho, i ended up with just a rhizome and dead leave, it still grew new stem tho exposing it slightly to light.
I bought a variegated zz but it's only pushing out full white leafs till date. I don't know for how long can that single mother leaf survive coz the white leafs don't have any chlorophyl.
Has anyone actually propagated a yellow growth like this? I feel like it's that colour due to a complete lack of chlorophyll and is more of an albino sport than 'varagated'. I'm happy to be wrong on this, but I'm not thinking it will have the ability to grow on it's own.
Hi Summer! Are you positive that the variegated stalk came from a Raven? From what I've gathered, Raven zzs have pink or purple variegations. Maybe you had a regular zz in the same pot which sprouted the typical yellow variegated stalk?
Hello, I have the same plant and I advise you not to leave the yellowed stem, it will not survive. You have to cut it short, and the plant will grow other stems quickly. It is a plant which does not require much light, and which grows also very well without ground, you can leave the roots in water permanently, it is what I did with one, and it grows without problem.
@@lunacycalico4017 Hello, no I did not put yellow stems. My plants make yellow stems (like in the video) only when they are sick, so I cut them short, and the plant makes stems again very quickly. The plants that I grow in water only have the roots in 4 inches of water height. It works very well, I change the water every week.
That yellow leaves are dying part of the plant. I have the same thing. The whole branch died. The other leaves are green and healthy. I placed the ZZ plant near the window with a filtered lights from the south side. Goodluck with your plant.

It was a fail, as she mentioned in her one the videos. It was a fail because it had no green, but white ish variegated leaves.

ZZ leaves turns yellow when they lack chlorophyll, getting not enough sunlight and when they're about to go to plant heaven. :)
There are also variegated zz's, and chameleon zz's, The chameleon ones leaves start off yellow but turn green as the plant gets older.
So glad you made this video, My zz plant just produced a light color stem & leaves! I will try to propagate it snd see what happens.
Your videos are always a joy to watch.
Love ZZ plants! That one looks like a lack of water since you have been gone.....
That is what I am thinking. The only time I have a plant turn yellow like that is when it is not healthy for lack of water or something.
I didn't think it was possible to propagate a fully variegated leaf? No harm in trying though, I do love a planty experiment! Keep us posted 🤞

No fungus or bacteria if you put a few drops of colloidal silver in the water. Plants love it.
